Trouble ripping DVDs for use on iPod

So I just downloaded Handbrake and VLC last night as suggested by the Handbrake website. I tried to rip disc 1 (per episode) of my Firefly DVDs so I could play them on my iPod and ended up with a video that looked like the screencap (spoilered for size):

I used the iPod preset and set the constant bitrate to 900 as suggested. Any suggestions for not getting this to happen?

    I had the same problem when I converted video for my iPod. Try uploading it to your iPod and seeing if it plays. Mine did, but I never did figure out why they wouldn't play properly in iTunes.

    I use the Videora software to convert dvd's and avi's to my Ipod nano. It works fine for me;
