[tiny]C'mon Ref! The guy just TELEPORTED and is using MIRROR IMAGES, is this even ALLOWED?!?[/tiny]
Save up those stars for at least a Double Star punch and he goes down pretty quick.
Also, don't randomly punch him, it speeds up his teleporting process. If you wait for him to do it, it's really easy to dodge. I watched my friend get murdered by him cause he kept trying to punch him and he'd get countered.
Don Flamenco is a bastard in TD mode, by god. I found a cheap way to beat him, but I don't feel good about it.
And if it's an indication of how hard this mode is, I've defeated the last five people by DECISION. Starting with Hondo. Also, three downs for you is pretty much a KO (of course, it's just as likely you'll get a TKO in the first round).

Useful advice thanks. My main problem is I keep dodging away from his hooks and getting smashed. Also I keep trying to get luck with counter-punching his mirror rush.

Yeah, whenever I fight him, I have to keep reminding myself to dodge into everything.
Speaking of counter-punches, one of his challenges actually requires you to TKO him using just the one-hit knockdown. It's frustrating as all hell.
And by free, I mean I traded in about 5 gamecube games. Mario Party 6 and 7, Soul Caliber and Sonic Heroes. Combine that with the employee discount and I'm set.
Unfortunately the wife also got a deal on EA Active, so I have the game in my possesion, just no the TV to go with it.
How much do last-gen games trade for at Gamestop anyway?

Anything with Mario in the title is worth more even if it's last gen.
Argh...so the internet told me Monday and was wrong. Gamestop told me Tuesday. I figured I could assume it'd be everywhere Tuesday...nope. Meijer has it in their ad for Wednesday and Wal-Mart didn't have it.
But I got it at Gamestop! Geez.
It is awesome. I am so glad that all the NES tricks are still in. Every review had people just dodging and counter punching constantly, but finding those split second stars is still in and a lot of fun. Of course it's a bit easier due to the red flashes and such.
There's an easy trick to beating Sandman.
Took me about four matches to figure it out.
Those red flashes (Lol) are kind of like a lead-on. In TD mode, you have to strike a split second after the red flash in order to get the star. I keep trying to use the timing for challenger mode and I get a punch in the face for my efforts.

I'm havin trouble with the timing on disco but... part of the fun
edit - I had him went he went left, just not right. taken care of, though.
I'm glad Glass Joe's challenges require you to lose a match. It breaks me of my need to have a perfect record. I tend to be a bit OCD when it comes to having flaws in my stats.
Got my copy today. I made it all the way to Soda Popinski. The drunk bastard murdered me in the first round. In my defense, I was never good at beating him on the NES either.
Out of curiosity, does this game have solid legs of it's own, or is nostalgia carrying most of the "Wow!" factor? The reason I ask is I still play the hell out of Super Punch Out!! on SNES and I'm worried it's going to be too much of the same thing.
Ugh, Popinski just laid me out flat through several attempts. His hooks and uppercuts seem to come out of almost nowhere and pressing the dodges doesn't even seem to register it seems.
Aran Ryan was a punk until I figured out his trick. Guy takes a bunch of damage when you finally stun him.

Yeah, Popinski is tough. They only thing I can say is to dodge faster...
He does follow a pattern for which punches he's gonna throw, so you can somewhat psychic dodge him. The patterns get screwed up a little after his fits though.
So I got mine. Plugged in the 'chuck and waggled my way through the second circuit. Probably going to switch to pressing buttons before I try Ryan, though. This game is great.
Has anyone managed to TKO Don Flamenco? If so, how? I struggled until the end until I won by decision.
I KOed him.
You can counter punch (low) his uppercuts to get stars. The quick one he does seems to be the easiest to nail him on. You can counter the rest too, but I usually just dodge and counter those.
After he gets pissed off he does a move where he kind of shuffles and then throws a little jab. You can block it and counter high for a star.
The practice mode is good for getting the timing of the counter punches.

I managed it, but it was rough, try to remember what shout matches what attack. He starts to shout before he telegraphs each counter-attack physically.

The first two attacks he does, the quick "normal" uppercut and "Carmen, mi amore!" both have pretty easy stars, but there's a short window for them. It's not actually when he is red, but just as he starts his swing, moving his fist down and around. Normal left body blow to get them.
Also, can I request a thread title change? Since, y'know, we've got more than a trailer now.
I guess I'm not as quick and savvy as you might be then, cause I've never got a star against Don and trying to interrupt his attacks just results in a glove in my face.
Bald Bull is tearing me apart, I know how to dodge his moves, but I just keep making a few slips and each hit does so much damage (plus that rapid right hook has a very short dodge window).

It's the only way I have played so far. It can feel impercise at times, but I find the goofy fun of full-body control to be worth taking a few hits.
I doubted the wisdom of buying this game all the way up until I put the disc in my Wii. (Same exact game as before, etc.) But man...they just friggin' nailed this somehow. Great fun.
Finally got a hold of the game and put some time into it today, up through the first six fighters. It's really a good thing that Glass Joe was there first, I was confused by the controls a bit to start out with and I got eased in well enough to hand Von Kaiser a TKO in under a minute. King Hippo gave me the opportunity to learn that the direction of my defenses is important, as is the direction of my attacks, and I got a comeback win. I also got a pretty come-from-behind win against Piston Hondo as well, and thanks to the Practice mode, I was able to find extra stars against Bear Hugger to fuel a victory in the actual match.
This game is great. But then, you already knew that. Haven't lost yet, but I definitely know many will be coming. I'm looking forward to it.
Well, besides the obvious stars from taunts (with the yellow flashing), the other way to get stars is via counterpunching - hitting your opponent in the right way just before they attack you, interrupting their attack and earning you a star. Some attacks are easier to counter than others - I don't think every attack can be countered, though. (But seeing that I'm only six fighters and less than even two hours in, I could be wrong.) Practice mode is great for this kind of stuff to learn the timing.
I can't wait to see what kinds of records people come up with for this game.
So how do you knock King Hippos crown off? I only messed around for a bit but I didn't have any luck on that challenge.
I played in a goofy way for a long time, only hitting him in the face, trying to hit him when he was red etc. I got it somehow - it's when you finish him off, instead of falling off his crown falls off and he regains health. It may take a finishing blow with a star punch, I forget. I was surprised I found it somehow.
Try hitting him in the face after he does his overhead smash. Actually, I think that was it: make the KO blow a face punch, any face punch.

I guess I don't know if this is true or not since I haven't gotten every star yet, but a good rule of thumb is that every time a boxer flashes red or yellow, you can get a star from them. You have to play around with the timings, generally it's at the very end of the red period, a split second before they hit you. You also have to play with the direction of the punch and whether it's a jab or body blow.

Hard to tell what typically gets stars though besides the obvious taunts and such.

I've pretty much fucked myself by doing so.
Bald Bull (TD) will fuck you up, too, if you don't fix it.
speaking of which, Bald Bull in TD can go fuck himself, and cocky bastard.
