As a huge Valkyrie Profile fan, I'm a little surprised there isn't a thread for this game seeing as how it's been out for almost a week now.
Prologue:
Across the fields of war echo the songs of fighting men:
"No glory as great
Does a warrior await,
No nobler be any than he,
That meets his fate
At Valhalla's gate,
On the wings of the Valkyrie."
Eagerly forth to battle go they who hold fast the creed, to Death their open arms extended, seeking Her divine embrace. So went a father to his venerable grave, a lone white feather left where he lay as he passed into the keeping of the gods.
In tragedy's wake a family wept while men of war sang his praises. Of glory bestowed and legends born the men will often speak, leaving untold the sullen tales in the hearts of the bereaved--
They who curse the blessings of the Chooser of the Slain.
The years would pass, but with them came no peace. Tragedy brought poverty, and poverty spawned tragedy more as hunger claimed a sister's life, then grief a mother's mind.
His house in ruin, his heart astray, and hope forever lost, Wylfred took glaive in hand, and ventured forth to battle. There she would descend, and waiting would be he--
So that a god might suffer a mortal's pain.
The game is different from the other two Valkyrie Profiles, most notably in that it is a Tactics-RPG rather than just a regular old JRPG. Also, you don't play as a Valkyrie... You play the role of Wylfred, a young man whose family is in shambles after the Valkyrie takes his father Thyodor. He makes a pact on the Destiny Plume with Hel, mistress of Nifleheim, to grant him the power necessary to destroy the cursed Chooser of the Slain.
In order to become powerful enough to defeat the Valkyrie, Wylfred will need to collect Sin for Hel. There are a couple of ways he can do this. One is to "Overkill" his enemies, by continuing to deal damage to them even when they should already be dead. The other is to invoke the Destiny Plume's power to grant a single ally great power for the duration of a battle... afterwards, their life becomes forfeit - never again to fight amongst the living.
Battles are all about positioning - Nearby characters will team up to attack enemies together, with each character assigned to a button like previous games in the series; get enough hits in and you can unleash their devastating finishing moves.
Some battle footageFeatures:
The game has some features, including but not limited to:
- TAKE A FLIGHT: The game sports a good deal of music taken right from the original Valkyrie Profile, which may be a tad lazy on the big SE's part, but I for one love VP's music and the game's soundtrack has me waxing nostalgiac every map.
- FINISHING STRIKE: Also included (and seen in the video above) are the special Soul Crush moves, complete with voice acting and quips from the characters using them.
- I DON'T WANNA... DIE: Depression abounds, as to be expected. People and characters die, and supposedly which characters you recruit or kill off changes which characters you will see or will join you later.
- MULTIPLE PATHS: There are multiple paths through the story, as near as I can tell - each one giving you access to a unique set of characters. Also, given that this is a tri-Ace joint, I would imagine multiple endings aren't out of the question.
- BONUS DUNGEON: I hear tell that there is a bonus dugeon... So, yeah.
I'm really enjoying the game so far and I hope some of you guys are too. So let's talk about it!
For those of you who haven't picked it up... it
does has the full Square-Enix tax in effect.
Posts
Though I've read mixed reviews, some talked about "both" combat sytems not really meshing together all that well.
I have some questions aswel, is there a class system in the game? Weapons and armour upgrades? (and how does it compare to Tactics Ogre or FFTA?)
Btw, Square-Enix tax, what's that?
You can only bring 4 characters into battle so you may have to decide between short/long range attackers, etc.
Weapon/Armor upgrades are purchased from shops as you progress or given as rewards for killing enemies or collecting enough Sin by the end of a battle.
The Square-Enix tax is the extra $5 that SE charges you to buy their DS games (they're pretty much always $40 instead of $30-35 that most normal games are).

God I even searched!
I was surprised you hadn't made a thread. *shrug*
Someone can lock this if everyone wants to migrate.
I'm sort of mixed on this. I like the Feather gimmick. I like that a lot of the battles are actually hard, but some of the maps are seriously way too large for having 4 characters. I really hate this isometric thing though. I also despise that Exp crystals don't mean jackshit unless you kill the enemy that encounter. So... what's the point of even trying for them? They did a pretty good job with the localization, but the thouspeak gets to be a bit much really often.
There were a couple battles where it was tough, but Vali's Awakening was enough to pull me through.
And yeah, some of the maps seem awful big. Like Wintergard, it's a pretty big map combined with the fact that you can't move very far.
But none of the stores here have it...
Time for gamestop.com I guess.
You need saves on all three endings for the Seraphic Gate. One ending requires using the Feather many many times. May as well grab that ending first for all the extra skills on the subsequent runs.
I'm already in Chapter 5, which according to this flowchart on GameFAQs is too late to get that ending.
Next run is going to be my sacrifice everyone run.
Make sure to kill off Cheripha early. Awesome awesome tactic.
Pluuuuume.
I don't wanna
Move Wylfred as far up as you can and use Vali's Awakening, that should draw at least one of them away.
That battle was such a pain.
Uhh...
I guess the gameplay looks cool, but that premise doesn't make sense.
Let 'em eat fucking pineapples!
please, video game, let me be the vilest I can be!
I went through the ending where you don't plume anybody first and I don't really recommend it. The boss has a habit of being rather unforgiving.
Boss Spoilers
I think I had to prep Lockswell, Wyl and Ancel with spell/might reinforce, guard reinforce lockswell and have him try to take attacks before I could get those three up to Garm to do as much damage as possible. I started running low on earth wards, so had to only use them on lockswell so he could survive an attack plus SC.
Also, buy a lot of union plumes. I had Cheripha sit in the back and resurrect people constantly.
On the other hand, sacrificing Cheripha almost makes the game too easy. Her skill is absurd. I tossed up her and her dad, and that made most of the rest of the game cake.
I'm two fights into chapter three and have yet to plume anyone. Sometimes I wanna but it always feels like cheating.
Dash, and Martyr's Cry.
Oh, and luck.
I already Plumed it. I figured going for the A ending first was silly, anyway.
I noticed that on my second playthrough. I don't recommend anyone go through the game first without pluming someone since the boss fight at the end of that path was very tough.
This was with Vali's Awakening/Might Reinforce/Spell Reinforce on everyone too, so I can't really bump up my damage output any more.
Blah.
Not for failing missions.

When you get all 3 endings, you will see how great this game is, it really plays with the player, a 2 way relationship. Very clever and good game.
All 3 endings also unlocks bonus dungeon.
I have to agree. It's not that isometric is bad. It's the angle makes it so sometimes there's NO direction from where you can see everything, because buildings will block your view no matter which way you turn.

CT I heard the bonus dungeons are annoying, and do I really need to play it yet again?
ST heard it became a chore to complete.
VP:CotP can be frustrating from randomness in battles while you're trying to "perfect" stages. But 2nd game+ should be a lot easier.

Well are you in the mood for a supereasy game (Suikoden) or a rather hard game (VP)?
This is the big reason I'm playing more Suikoden than VP; it's easy to play Suikoden for a few hours and progress the whole time. With VP, I tend to lose battles two or three times before I get them down, and then I still don't get all the Sin I want.
your name is Chrono and you're debating if you should get this or Chrono Trigger?
BLASPHEMY!

Do the main character and Valkyrire fuk at the end?
Well, I've already played Chrono Trigger. :P
I think I am leaning toward getting VP first, difficulty probably swaying me away from Suikoden.
