it might just need resetting i did something to my vizios remote when i was setting things up and it lit up upon button pressing but nothing happened. it was something crazy like push every button 5 times or something like that. it worked though
So, what is looking good so far? I still haven't been able to decide what I should get since no one knows how bad the black level rise on the 2010 Panny's are yet.
So, what is looking good so far? I still haven't been able to decide what I should get since no one knows how bad the black level rise on the 2010 Panny's are yet.
Really my understanding is that the balance hasn't really changed. Pannys are still producing the best picture. Samsung is still ruling the LCD market with Sony about equal in quality but way more expensive. I haven't seen any interesting reviews the past few weeks so I'm assuming a bunch of stuff still isn't out. Hell that trip to Best Buy I mentioned earlier only had a couple 2010 sets (a few C-models from Samsung).
Yeah, it's weird to go to Best Buy and see that they still have mostly 2009 sets on the floor and fucking Walmart has nothing but 2010s up.
Bearing in mind that Walmart mostly stocks off-brands or the cheaper models of on-brands, and thus might be moving TVs a bit quicker than Best Buy in this economy.
We're actually carrying the 6-series Samsungs this year, after carrying nothing but crap last year. Though the LEDs we carry in-store are 60Hz.
And the 6-series is actually a cheaper model of an on-brand, like I said. It still sits under the 7-series, as well as being underneath every single LED TV Samsung sells. Additionally, a quick check of your website shows that the 6-series you're carrying isn't the main go-to 650...it's the lesser-quality 630. The only time Walmart isn't failing at TVs is during Black Friday, and even then one is still better off looking online.
Oh, Walmart fails at pretty much everything to be totally honest. I sure as hell wouldn't buy a TV there. I've bought my last three TVs online and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
My old tv (westinghouse lvm-32w1 I think it is) I use as a computer monitor is dying on me with a really bad image retention problem, so i need a replacement.
I don't really care about 3d or any other new crazy buzzword techs unless it really ia better, and cost isn't that much of a concern, all it really needs is the following:
-30 or 32 inch in size, preferably 32.
-1080p or better reolution
-Quick response time
-Tuner not needed but would be nice (def don't need digital tuner as I have cable)
-1 dvi input/hdmi, 1 vga input, and than either another vga/dvi/hdmi if it doesn't have a tuner for my own.
So what are my options oh great tv thread people
Edit: oh I'm canadian if that makes any difference in options

I picked that tv up last week (was $628 USD) and I've been loving the hell out of it so far. 32", 1080p and 120hz refresh rate.
you can get a 32" vizio xvt which is the 120hz version for 529 at costco. i have it. its a very nice tv, lots of inputs, 3 HDMI, 1 composite, i think 2 components, a vga and i think something else

Looks like a good tv, but I also saw the EX700 line version, and was wondering if it was worth the extra cash, how much better picture would it get me?
The EX700 is edge-lit LED. The EX500 is not. That should tell you about all you need to know. Though I'm not too familiar with the performance of lower-priced LED models...I've only seen the usual flagship ones.
I hear PC gaming is huge off the coast of Somalia right now.

Ok it is coming.. I have a 73 inch 3D TV, and Sony has just released the 3D patch for PS3. All I need is a set of glasses for it. Are there any recommendations, good deals, etc?

uhhhh... don't know if you noticed, but the PS3 update is only for 3D GAMING, not 3D Blu-Ray Movies, they decided to clarify themselves AFTER 3D TV's started getting released into retail

What's your point? There is going to be an update for 3D blu-ray, it's just coming later.
I missed this article a couple months ago. I haven't had time to read it all yet but the really interesting comment is the last paragraph on the first page where they say they think they'll have [expensive] 40" OLEDs in 2012. So maybe by 2014 we'll start seeing affordable models at that range? What's surprising is that LG is the one pushing this as opposed to Samsung who's been relatively quiet or Sony who seem to have cut R&D on the tech.

Exactly, besides I'm more interested in 3D gaming anyway. So any affordable kits or deals out there? I need a set of glasses because my TV didn't come with one.

I'm not too familiar with it. I was going to recommend to do whatever the manufacturer says. Then I went and checked out of curiosity. Mitsubishi doesn't include the glasses or offer any recommendations that I can find on what to buy. The only thing I got out of the site was that they use some sort of checkerboard standard and they warn that an official 3D standard still doesn't exist. I know DLPs are cheap but if you're buying a new 73" 3DTV the least they can do is throw in a damn pair of glasses. You may be looking at some cash, I know Samsung's cost $150.

Each? That's ass reaming highway robbery for a pair of glasses with shutters in them. I mean I was expecting 100 bucks which is also much, but 150 is beyond the pale.
Ugh, I really need to stop doing research it seems. Panasonic seems to have compounded the problem of last year's model with a new fun "feature" - floating blacks. So now not only will the base minimum black turn more grey as time goes on, but even then that shade of black/grey will fluctuate in dark scenes. Oh, also, some of their units buzz loudly, seems to be some of the power supplies are noisy. ~Facepalm~
Here I was ready to forgive them for the black level thing and spend the money. Is it too much to ask for a TV without an obvious defect?
I'm not 100% sure how serious I would take that power buzzing thing. I've seen that pop up in various places on all kinds of TVs on the AVSForum. I was a little nervous about my Pioneer Kuro because I'd seen that more often there than anywhere else. I've been to a lot of friends' houses with a lot of HDTVs and never heard a buzzing. This floating black thing is completely new to me and I just cannot understand why two years later Panasonic still can't make a TV as good as a Kuro even though they own the goddamn patents used in the Kuro.

Well, the TV does buzz, but you have to be right up next to it. However, there are some that can be clearly heard over normal and sometimes high volmue levels at over 8 feet away. As for the floating blacks, I've learned that the Panny's from 2008 and earlier had this problem, and the 2009's had it fixed, but introduced the bad black rise algorithm.
The working theory is that the floating is being caused in part by making it compliant with the new Energy Star certification. Something about not using enough power to stimulate the the cells to keep them consistently charged. They either cut some corners like they did with the black rise, or it's unintended side effect. It's unknown if firmware can fix it.
The troubling thing is as people started reporting this to Panny they said they'd escalate to the Engineers, a couple weeks later one guy claimed it was the first complaint. Then a week or two ago the response to one person was that it was intended. Where have we heard that before?
Wait wait wait so my 3D ready Mitsubishi DLP needs ANOTHER adapter besides the one that comes with the shutter glasses and it won't be available for a while?
While at 32" 1080p is pretty much unneeded, at what price point does it seem like its ok just to say "what the heck" and make the jump? I'm on a budget, and after reading through this thread I'm stuck between two Vizios:
The 1080p is also available at Target for the same price, and rumor has it that it sometimes even drops down to $400. I'm trying to surprise the wife though, so I don't have months to sit around and wait for that deal. I mean, am I completely wasting $30 on something I will never differentiate, or because its just $30 I might as well go for it?
Can we talk about subwoofers and receivers here, too? I have an old Denon receiver that's definitely at least 12 years old, probably a lot more, and no subwoofer. I'm planning on buying a new receiver and a subwoofer soon but could use some advice, since I've been out of the audio loop for awhile.
I don't have a gigantic budget, but these are what I've been looking at:
Also, I shouldn't have to replace my speakers, right? Speakers are speakers, after all. They're also quite old, but they're by Phase Technology, wood, and American made. They're gigantic, so I'm assuming these are fine to keep.

If your speakers sound fine to you then keep them. Phase Tech used to make pretty good speakers (haven't listened to any of their product younger then the late 90's).
My opinion is if you can't afford this you don't need to get a standalone receiver.
Edit: I'm half tempted to rename this a home-theater thread because most of the speaker/receiver threads don't make it past page 3 anyways. If I do that I'm still not including front-projectors cause fuck if that doesn't introduce a bunch of extra shit.

That looks like a great receiver, although it is more money than the Sony. The Sony STR-DH810 is 285 on Amazon, while the Onkyo is 500. I like that the Onkyo is 3D ready, but I don't know if I want to pay 215 more dollars for that. I can still do 3D with the Sony, I'd just have to use an optical cable for the audio instead of running a single HDMI cable to the television from the receiver. I'm not a giant audiophile, but I could do with a new receiver, as mine is probably pushing 15 years or more. It wouldn't hurt to have something that supports uncompressed audio, especially with Blu-ray movies and games.
Reasons I recommend that receiver are mostly video-driven:
Upscales everything to one ressolution (1080p or 720p) so your TV is always displaying native resolution
Converts analog to digital so everything can go to HDMI
Audyssey Dynamic EQ/Dynamic Volume to help balance sound for movies (esp at low volume)
THX Select2 Plus certification
Auto-speaker calibration
Dolby PLIIz (though most people will never use this)
Though I see now that the Sony can do the top 2 and the auto-calibration
