So exactly one year ago today, I decided to change my life. I was overweight, I had a poor social life (spent all my time on my computer and playing video games), and I was sick of it.
For the last year, I have not used my computer, I have not played video games, and I have not watched any movies or TV shows.
The results are amazing...I lost tons of weight (learned how to cook), I read half a dozen books a week now, I learned how to play the piano, and I picked up painting. Basically, the difference is astounding.
Anywho, the year is officially up today. I'm excited to see a few movies that have been released the last year that my friends have been talking about (Dark Knight, Wall-E, etc), and maybe pick up a few video games (I have an Xbox 360). Basically, what has happened in the last year entertainment wise? What should I check out?
I'm a huge fan of the Office, so I'll be catching up on that. Other than that...I like all types of video games, and I like all types of movies (especially comedies and action).
Thanks!

How'd your social life improve?
Don't be in such a rush to catch up in movies/games that you go back to your old habits. You've broken those habits completely, which is awesome! Catch up slowly
A good video game is Dead Space. The Watchmen just came out, I enjoyed that. Read the graphic novel first to enhance the experience.
Yeah I didn't use my computer at all, except two or three times because of a class I was taking at college which required that a quiz be taken online.
And yeah, I'll go slow for sure. I mean, the desire to see catch up is not very strong. I just want a list so that when I get around to it I can work it into my schedule.
My social life improved drastically. Before, I relied on myspace, but now I'm always talking on the phone. This has helped impoved my social skills quite a bit, and I have many good friends and a girlfriend now.
We (US) got a new Prez - that was sort of cool. 8-)
I have to comment that you seem to have just traded one set of solitary activities (games, TV) for another (painting, reading). One could even argue those are more hermit-like, as games/computing often have community options. No digs meant, as I've got those same issues to work on myself.
I'd be interested to hear how your social life has changed as well.
The Dark Knight
Role Models
Step Brothers
Iron Man
Pineapple Express
TV Shows:
The Office
Big Bang Theory
The last season of South Park was pretty strong
Videogame wise, it was pretty weak. Apollo Justice for the DS came out, Fable II underperformed, Gears of War 2 was decent. For me, last year put me off of playing games, because there wasn't a lot that made me want to play them. Now it has to be really new or strong for me to consider buying.
....uh, that's about it.
Haha, yeah, I know about the president, since I subscribe to tons of news magazines. I'm pretty much in the know about current events.
And I actually paint with my GF and I play piano with her as well. And the social options weren't the only reasons I dropped video games/TV...I didn't feel like I was gaining anything, and it was unhealthy to be sedentary for so long.
And while there are community options in games etc, nothing beats face to face or actually talking to a person.
Yes that movie list is quite good, I've heard amazing things about Pineapple Express, Iron Man, and Step Brothers.
I'm really into FPSs. Were there no good releases in that category? My buddy was talking about a zombie shooting game...I forget the name...that sounded really fun.
Left 4 Dead probably.
Also, Valkyria Chronicles was liked on the boards here for the PS3.
Probably Left 4 Dead, but it might've been Dead Space. Both are great games.
Cool. I definielty feel like I'm stuck in a rut sometimes; sounds like cold turkey is really the only way to do it. :^:
Most of the major relases have been covered, XBOX saw a pretty big Dashboard upgrade last fall(?), if you haven't check it out yet.

2008 was weak video games? Last year destroyed me because so many awesome games came out in the fall. Of course Fable II "underperformed" because it was fable, I wasn't really expecting anything from that department.
Anyway, it is rad that you did that. Makes me think I should work out more. I probably wouldn't go to the extreme that you did, but sometimes things like that are needed in special situations. As far as games that game out, well.. a few of the great ones are for the PS3 so I guess I won't list those...
But for what you have I would have to say Dead Space, Fallout 3. Seriously fallout 3 was fantastic. GTA IV is good times. Call of Duty world at war came out. It was a different company than 4, but it used the CoD4 engine so it was basically the same game, just set in WWII again if you are into that kind of thing. Plus it has flamethrowers. Also spore came out for the PC but I must admit I did not play it nearly as much as I thought I would.
Hahaha quality post right here; I was just listening to that song.
In your case, I'd recommend grabbing a DS (yes, I know they were out a year ago). It has a lot of games you can play for shorter periods in between your new hobbies. I recommend the new Phoenix Wright game in particular - I just played one for the first time and they're almost like interactive mystery novels.
(FYI it feels so weird typing on a keyboard, but it comes back incredibly fast).
Also, I have a DS...I just have to find it! I'll definitely look to expand the library a bit, though only if there are truly exemplary games...I mostly read now when I have to fill time, and I don't see that changing much.
Hmm. Oh, have there been any big announcements? What films should I be looking forward to in the next few months or coming year? Remember, I haven't seen any trailers or anything!
And if anyone is in the same rut that I was in, I would strongly reccomend doing what I did (maybe not to the extent that I did...I stopped use of everthing because I knew if I used some things I wouldn't be able to stop using the others). Seriously, though, it is amazing. The first month or so was difficult, because there were tons of times that I just didn't know what to do! Like I said though, I learned to play the piano, dabbled in woodcraft, became way more social, exercised tons, and (laugh all you want) made a LOT of paper airplanes. I also camped a lot, and wrote letters instead of emails, which tons of people found refreshing (though they weren't as excited when they realized they had to respond the same way haha).
Wow, did you write essays by hand? I bet your teachers were surprised!
That is all.

Yeah
You can go there and watch a huge variety of tv shows, current as well as stuff long canceled. If you are looking to catch up on tv shows, Hulu will become your new best friend.
Also, www.drhorrible.com Joss Wedon's Midsummer Masterpiece with Nathan Finnion and Niel Patrick Harris. (You can watch this on Hulu as it is the most optimal way.)

if you are dubious about how fun D&D can be (or even if you already play it) there is another thing to catch up on: the penny arcade/pvp D&D podcasts (which are often hilarious, and are also on iTunes)
I mean the amount of fun you'll have depends on whether you're playing with the mouthbreathing "always a dark elf with a mysterious past" type of people or people who are actually fun to be around, but its an option!

Really? I thought it was one of the best comic movies out there. Not that it's saying much...
I don't want to get in an argument over what is obviously totally subjective, but...
Jeff Bridges gave the only performance that didn't grate on me, Robert Downey jr. was very funny in tropic thunder, but showed no range whatsoever in this role.
I felt that the script was very bad. Both because the dialouge was contrived, ("hey guys I fuck supermodels, did you see that? that was charicterization!") and the plot was meh. I don't expect it to be plausible, because yeah, it's a super hero movie, but a little bit less paint by the numbers would be nice.
Lastly, the charicter of Stark wasn't cool to start with, and his little "revelation" was so shallow and corny, even if the rest of the movie didn't fall flat, it would have dragged it down.

Obviously some of it was 'modernized' but did you know anything about Iron Man to begin with? Just out of curiousity.
And yeah, I haven't seen Watchmen yet. Theatre movies are far too much money for me.
I'm not going to get into a lol-opinion battle, but Iron Man was pretty widely accepted as a good movie. It is fine saying you didn't like it but it was definitely not a bad movie.
Did I put an "N" instead of an "L"?...ooops

Iron Man was a very good movie
Watchmen is really depressing but a good movie. Elaborating..and if you have taken philosophy and religion classes, (probably) none of the ideas in it are going to be new (like for me). It does make you think a lot, and in ways most people don't think unless they read about philosophy and think about the meaning of life, so it's a really hot/cold thing. For me it was kinda cold
GRAND THEFT AUTO IV is awesome but ridiculously addicting and very long
If you didn't play COD4 much, COD5 came out and it's the same thing in a WWII skin. Would've been nice to have that AND 4 at the same time, and be able to have rankings go up in both at the same time...
I hear Fallout 3 is great but it too is addicting
