Medical Advice (Throat)

I know most of the medical advice things in this thread come down to "see a doctor," but this toes the line enough that I'm not sure.

For the past week I've had a low-grade sickness. A little sleepy, a cough, headache at the beginning, and most persistently, throat pain when swallowing that occasionally extended to the ears. It's been annoying, but not serious at all and probably just a cold or something. All my friends had it too, so that's not suspicious.

Anyway it's been getting better and better, and with the exception of a mild case of pink eye that turned up a couple days ago I'm almost all better, except for one thing (this is where I start sounding really stupid, but I am just going to tell the story and see what sticks).

On a road trip a couple days ago my throat was bugging me, so I got a Frosty from Wendy's to soothe it. It was working, but wasn't melting fast enough and I didn't feel comfortable eating something with a spoon at 80mph, so I basically just sucked at the straw while it slowly melted to drink it, little by little. Eventually, the strain of this starting hurting my throat in a muscle-ache kind of way, so I stopped. This may or may not be relevant.

Flash forward to now. When I swallow, there's a bit of pain in my left ear, but the back of my throat doesn't hurt at all like it did when I was sick. However, there's extremely localized pain on the top left of my throat, and some of the rings of cartilage around that part of the esophagus I notice some asymmetry - specifically, right below my jawbone. This pain has been around for a few days, and while it wasn't around before the Frosty thing I can't guarantee that it started immediately afterward. One side of the cartilaginous ring has a hard protuberance that is not sensitive, although pressing it does cause me some discomfort (as does pressing any part of my throat). The location of this protuberance coincides with the location of the pain. It's not the lymph nodes under the back part of my jaw, before anyone guesses that.

So I'm not running to a doctor because this may just be my sore throat in its death throes, although if it's still bugging me in two or three weeks then I'll definitely pop in. In the meantime, can someone tell me what this could be, or what is going on with my body?

Honestly, health is one thing in life you shouldn't be taking chances with. Hindsight can't be 20/20 when you're dead.
See a doctor. Worst case, he tells you you're fine and to get some rest. Best case, he heals you right up and/or tells you what the problem is.

In other news, i want a frosty.

well I'm in the middle of traveling around a whole lot and won't be able to see one for a little while anyway, and I just had a complete shock as to my own hypochondriasis when I decided the twinge in my jaw was bone cancer or a cyst, went in to the dentist and had him tell me "it's your wisdom tooth healing, lemme know if it still feels weird in three weeks."

yeah, if it hurts in a little bit I'm going in to the doctor. I just want someone who actually knows what he's talking about to pop in and go "oh, that sounds exactly like blahdeblah," because it's gonna keep bugging me until I go in and it's a little too esoteric a pain to easily find similar experiences online.

I don't need this to be post after post of people telling me to go in to a doctor - I know how that works, and I'm going to if it persists. I am not, however, going to drive back home in the middle of my one vacation with the girl so that I can tell a doctor that my sore throat has felt different for two days.

No, the worst case is he drops a c-note (or more) to have a doctor tell him he's being a hypochondriac. Not everyone lives where healthcare is free.

It sounds like you're being a hypochondriac, Shanks. Give it a couple of days, if it doesn't go away, then think about talking to a doctor. Also, for future reference, you don't drink something extra-cold to soothe a sore throat; that generally just makes things worse. You want to drink something hot, like tea or soup.

    OP,

Drinking/eating anything with sugar will only make your condition worse (as far as I know). Try either drinking some green tea, or eating some soup.

Also, and this might sound stupid, swallow a tablespoon full of honey. It will coat the back of your throat so it won't be as irritated. Try and use the natural kind too.
