Internet Browsers Give Up

I have a hard time describing this problem, which makes my googling skills almost useless.

Sometimes, for no reason at all, my internet browsers will give up trying to connect. Both IE, firefox, and even steam's browser will just not go to any websites. The strange thing is, they won't even try. I'll refresh or press the Try Again button, and it'll instantly go to the "failed to connect" error without making an attempt to connect, like what usually happens when I've lost my internet connection. There is no delay at all.

However, this only happens with browsers. Any IM programs (like steam) or online games or torrents will continue to run fine or even start okay after this problem happens.

The only way I've found to solve it is to reboot completely, which is kind of a pain. Any ideas what is going on or at least a better way to describe it for google?

Could they have somehow switched into "Work Offline" mode?

    Try flushing your dns.

bring up a command window and type "ipconfig /flushdns" without the quotation marks.

i get this at work a lot.

Sorry, I couldn't respond before this, but I had to wait for it to happen again to try the suggestions. I tried both flushing the dns and rebooting the modem and neither worked.

I still had to restart my computer to get it back.

    Any other ideas?

Spyware can hijack browsers and stop them from working.

What happens if you log out of that user account and log back in instead of restarting?
