In days long past, it was common practice for those in possession of such a thing as a modem to dial in to a system known as a Bulletin Board System (BBS). These offered a range of text,
enhanced text and
graphical interfaces for posting messages, downloading files and playing games (most of these games relied on what was called a "drop file" called door.sys to synchronize with the rest of the BBS system).
There were many popular titles such as
Legend of the Red Dragon,
Barren Realms Elite,
Tradewars,
Usurper and
Falcon's Eye. Some of these, such as BRE, even synchronized their data across multiple BBSes allowing for quite large numbers of players (each night, usually around midnight, each BBS would automatically dial up all the others in its list and synchronize their data).
They generally involved a persistent, multi user world and featured gameplay that encouraged short play sessions on a daily basis. In other words, these games were the direct forebears of a whole genre of what are now browser based games.
Examples of this new generation of a very old genre include
Ikariam and it's Egyptian counterpart
Children of the Nile.
This thread is to post recommendations or reviews of other, similar games. There are seemingly hundreds of them available now but the wheat-to-chaff ratio is not good. So, what are your favorites? Have any horror-stories of ones to avoid?

EDIT: Penny Arcade even has a whole MMO thread devoted to it.
Also, Kingdom of Loathing is similar. It's a parody of the stereotypical fantasy RPG.
