Tower Doesn't Get Nicknamed (Freedom Tower)

Daily Intel is reporting that the marketers selling space for the "Freedom Tower," currently under construction at Ground Zero, have decided to change the building's name to "One World Trade Center". While it seems that many people are in favor of not naming the tower something so politically charged and“Bush-y”, former Governor Pataki, who came up with the “patriotic” name, is not pleased.

"In design and name, it is symbolic of our commitment to rise above the attacks of Sept. 11. Where 1 and 2 World Trade Center once stood, there will be a memorial with two voids to honor the heroes we lost — and, in my view, those addresses should never be used again." Maybe we can honor those who passed on 9/11 with something more than a name, Something, dare I say, more significant?!

If this is a repeat thread, my bad.

So, I'm a little dumbfounded at this. It came to my attention because my mother is up in arms about it (failing to recognize the Port Authority are those naming it, she used it as another anti-Obama rant). So, this new building that they're setting up at Ground Zero was nick-named Freedom Tower, which of course was a part of the "Freedom is awesome!" thing the last administration had. Yeah, it is awesome. We know it.

Now people, especially the New York press, are mad at the name One World Trade Tower. I could see there being outrage for a name change to something like, Bob's Tower. But really, "One World" I think is being misread by Pataki here. One World as in, y'know, peace and people being united? Or maybe I'm reading it wrong. Even then, honoring the towers and those who died there works with the Port Authority's name, maybe even better than "Freedom Tower." No matter what, I still see symbolism in place.

Is this really something worth getting upset about? Are there implications behind each name I'm missing?

'Freedom Tower' wasn't necessarily ethnocentric in terms of naming conventions, but when you're naming a building 'Freedom Tower' in lieu of X World Trade Center, a plaza intended to be a center for worldwide office commerce ... well, I don't know. I think it is ethnocentric, then.

I think that a return to the original naming convention is good. I think that the rest of the world will see this as coming back down to Earth, and not some sort of capitulation.

Maybe they should just auction off the name to the highest bidder, and give 20% to a charity of their choice.

The article says One World Trade Center ala the actual address of the building, not One World Trade Tower. Just like there is 4 WTC, and 8 WTC, this will be 1 WTC. Personally I prefer something along those lines over 'Freedom!' but I agree that numbers 1 and 2 should be memorialized along with the foundations. Have this one be 3 World Trade Center, and bump all the other buildings up a number.

Are they rebuilding both towers or just this one?

Because if the former, then what were those who were calling it "Freedom Tower" going to name the second?

1 & 2 World Trade Towers fell, killing thousands of people. I don't think it's a good idea to name the new tower in their place after them. "Freedom Tower" is a stupid name, part of the Bush Administration's war on common sense and open discourse on what happened. I'm in favour of dropping it as well.

So how about a normal name? New York Tower? Manhattan Tower? Richy Tower? It's not like we're so low on tower names that our only two options are the name of towers where thousands of people died or a stupid politically-charged name.

Or that. Naming it 3 is somewhat evocative of the twin towers, so don't know if that would be considered a good thing or not.

Also, they should bring the old globe back in from Battery Park as it is the best memorial of the attacks conceivable.

Only one, and they aren't rebuilding anything it's a brand new design because the original one was actually pretty shitty. Though its heresy to admit that now.

1/3/11/0 WTC is a normal name. It's what every building in the complex actually is named and so this would be a continuation of that convention.

Well apparently, the site previously had WTC 1 to 7. So if you want to keep the complex naming convention, the new building should be WTC 8.

I have a hard time getting pissed about it if they did name it "Freedom Tower". Yeah, I know that so naming it originally had a sort of "MURCA, FUCK YEAH" vibe too it but it's really a pretty average name, if somewhat uncreative. Nobody calls the Liberty Bell jingoistic. It's almost the most neutrally american name they could have come up with. Hell, in Louisville the basketball stadium is called Freedom Hall (I guess they didn't have any big donors the year they built it).

Also, expect the whole "One World Trade Tower" thing to come up in obnoxious conspiracy theories and "Zeitgeist"-esque videos for years to come.

Bells and towers don't occupy the same namespace in my mind. Bells are more evocative of ideas, to me, and the Liberty Bell is a fantastic name for a bell, anywhere. The 'Freedom Tower,' though? It's a building, ultimately. It's going to be used as a building, right?

I don't think that structures which house people, or businesses, or anything like that are entitled to lofty abstracts in the same way that a bell is. It doesn't come across as corny to me because 'Freedom Tower' is corny, it's because 'Freedom Tower' is probably still going to have a bunch of cubicles on at least a few floors and, seriously, c'mon. Are we going to call them Freedom Cubicles? Freedom Businesses, with Freedom Entrepreneurs?

I can see your point, but like I say, it would hardly be the first time such a lofty title was bestowed on something like this. As I mentioned, in Louisville they've got a Freedom Basketball Court. That's just one I know right off; I'm sure there's all kinds of freedomy mundanities across the country if you looked them up.

In any case it doesn't really matter, since the name's apparently going to be changed. The only thing I thought was kind of dumb about it was that I remember a few years ago they were trying to make it exactly 1776 feet tall.

    It's a tower.

    In which trade is conducted.

    Trade that involves the world.

There are many of these towers.

    The first is called "one."

That certain people seem to find this system difficult is strangely simultaneously disappointing and unsurprising.

Question: if the blithering idiots finding this offensive were shopping for a home, say on President Drive, would they skip 44 President Drive because omgbama!?

I actually like "One World Trade Center". It's more inclusive and unifying rather than divisive. It also doesn't evoke the idiotic "They attacked us because they hate our freedoms." bullshit. "One World Trade Center" seems like a rather good way of saying, "Come on, guys. Let's just fucking get along and work towards the betterment of all humanity."

And it fits the point of the tower:
The people decided their city should have a tower so immense that it would have "its top in the heavens."(וְרֹאשׁוֹ בַשָּׁמַיִם) However, the Tower of Babel was not built for the worship and praise of God, but was dedicated to the glory of man, with a motive of making a 'name' for the builders: "Then they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.'"
