That's ace. You have a great balance of light/dark/midtone and everything reads well.

Registration really is a bitch, be glad you weren't doing it reductive style.

I really like this. Her torso is way too long, but I actually don't think it detracts from the work.

pretty cool. I think any anatomy issues are forgivable because it comes together really well.

That looks fabulous, man. It really suits your style and you have a really good choice of colours for it. Are you just doing linocut, or are you doing any other forms of printmaking?

I just noticed the temple in the background. Niicceee.

This assignment was done before any of the others shown. We were told to divide our block of pine (this is actually carved into the back of the self portrait board) into 8 equal sections and produce "an interesting dark/light design" in each, incorporating text into at least one of them.

This was the second time I even used the tools. The first was a quick assignment telling us to carve lines using each tool to know how each works. I might post it later.

So, in my illustration class, I had to make an 8-page, 5" square saddle-stitched booklet. No text allowed, a children's instructional guide on how to make a fire. I chose a method I found on youtube whose effectiveness I question.
anyway, just finished it up, here it is, starting with the back and front cover:

hahaha childrens instructional guide is almost as funny as having only a condom and water instead of a lighter or match. You did a good job illustrating the ridiculousness of it.

In my illustration class, I have to make an "altered book."

I found this old science book for kids from the 60s at an antique store near my pad:
    oldbc.jpgoldfc.jpg

Using illustrations from it and a few similar books from the era, I'm giving it a twist of being written for alien children living alongside humans kind of District-9 style. The idea is that the aliens are most definitely a minority, but the book is like propaganda encouraging alien kids to conquer/eat/etc. humans.

Here's the new front and back covers:
    newbc.jpgnewfc.jpg

and here's a detail showing how I'm trying to maintain the original worn look of the book:

I scanned the original book, cloned out the stuff I didn't want. drew the new stuff by hand, scanned in that lineart. made a selection from that lineart and duplicated the background and used levels and hue/saturation slider to keep the original texture. same for the added text.

printed it on label paper, put it back on the book. sanded it down some and stained some of the sanded areas with watercolor.

oh, and I glued the fabric back to the spine with fabric glue.

here's the first of the illustrations that I've editted. There are multiple illustration styles that I'm using and will have to match. I chose this as the easiest one to do first.

talkin' bout the awkward text layout I assume?

I'm leaving some of the original text in and I'm trying to match its setup as closely as possible. It's just as bad throughout:

the kerning in the book is better then what you have
you have huge spaces between your letters

you could try and get rid of the orphans, the example you showed yes it does have an orphan but not for both lines

yeah, I changed the kerning solely to get the lines of text the same width. Should I change the spaces between the words instead?

If you couldn't tell, I know jack shit about typography.

the easiest thing to do would be to would be make one big text block
then just manually change the settings using the type window

like make the kerning better, looks like they just have an en dash (apple+shift+n) instead of a tab, it also looks like his typeface is bigger so go a step up from roman, but bold might be too strong

    better?

was using Century. Bold was too thick, moved to Century Schoolbook, a little thicker it seems. Now are you talking an en-dash as in –? Not using a mac, and ctrl+shft+n even when editing text in photoshop has a different function.
