Free music creation software?

Alright, hopefully threads like this don't pop up every week...

I play guitar and keyboard and have a pretty good thing going with a recording/tweaking program, but I mainly just record music and export it straight into an mp3 without editing it at all. Lately, I've been wanting to try my hand at making more electronic/sampler type music, but I've never delved into this activity. I really have no idea what's out there as far as free music creation software, and I don't even know where to begin looking.

Basically... Any suggestions?

if you are looking for sequencers, there aren't alot of free ones out there. sound banks are just too labor intensive to make and distribute for free.

The already-mentioned Jeskola Buzz is actually used quite often by a lot of professional techno artists. It's finicky, full of bugs, and no longer actively developed, but there's a huge cult scene behind it.

Actually, the Top-Reviewed overall album of 2007 was made using only Jeskola Buzz and some samples from old pop songs.
