Eh. This is always how it is when games are released on Steam. It's generally not until late into the day when the game is actually available. I just am always prepared to not play it until I get home from work on release day.

So I gave in and put Plants vs. Zombies on my official Goozex request list since I have the points and I've been looking forward to this game for a while. I'm first in line. It's 600 Goozex points. It's still $9.99 on Steam for 2-3 hours more so you could essentially get 600 Goozex points for $10 if you act quick (I assume it's going to go up to full price, $20, after it launches).
I'm going to head off to work in a minute so if you get matched up with me (my Goozex username is the same as my Penny Arcade username, RainbowDespair), my email address is rwb36@hotmail.com (for Steam gifting purposes).
Doesn't Steam typically state when the full and pre-order prices on the page for deals like that? It doesn't really give any indication on the Steam page that the price is a promotional deal anywhere that I could find on the page.

Okay, I sent you the game. Have fun!
Thanks! I got the email from Steam so I went ahead and gave you positive feedback on Goozex. Can't play it yet since I'm on a work computer at the moment (lunch break), but I'm really looking forward to tonight.
Do you always have to click on the sun to get the resources? That gets annoying fast.
I think you do.
It's supposed to add a level of interaction that most tower defense games don't have, rather than have you simply watch the action you're almost always clicking on something.
Between planting things, digging things back up, clicking on coins, and clicking on sunshine, there's a lot to do in any given round which keeps it fresh and interesting. I remember missing my first couple pieces of sunshine in the night levels.. I pooped my pants thinking I'd lose.. thankfully the game is pretty forgiving and I scraped by.

It's good that it keeps things fresh and I still can't wait to get home and dig into something other than the demo, but I like tower defense games more like Defense Grid where you don't always need to be clicking something and you won't lose if you miss clicking on game objects.
In the end I'll have to see how addicted I get to this game.

The puzzle modes are actually pretty fun, although it's basically impossible to get past about round 6-7 or so on either. The vase one being a little easier.
There are actually only two, one where you place zombies to beat a random lawn, and one where you have to break all the vases, which release either seeds or zombies. Both have an 'endless' mode, but each round gets more and more vicious. Spawning more of the nasty zombies in vases or giving you almost no cash to spawn zombies in the other. By amassing a huge amount of cash on the early couple stages, I managed to get to 10 on the zombie one, where there were only two sunflowers to gain cash back. That's not even enough to break even if there were 0 plants defending it.
man so far the mushroom levels are so easy but now I need to start planting cacti as well so maybe it'll pick up. I suck at the bowling minigame too though I easily won the slot machine one

Nah. You'll get one-shot plant that autokills all balloon zombies on the screen soon. That's far more useful than the annoying cacti. Or just buy the cattails upgrade. It shoots homing shots that'll target any enemy, so one of them anywhere covers all rows.
I meant 4-1 and onward, the night-time foggy pool levels.
Well I make sure to use as many of the free fungi as possible, build up a solid base of sunshrooms, then it's all about the threepeaters.
But I'm only at about 4-3.
The night attack shrooms are mostly all awful and shouldn't be bothered with aside from using them because they're very cheap. Also, just FYI, it -is- better to just use Sunflowers anyway in the night levels, especially if you're using the freebie shrooms against the initial zombies.
The first level with balloon zombies is a bit of a pain since you'll have to save cash to put down cacti where needed, but otherwise, just play it like the previous night level... plus water. I never even bothered with any of the fog clearing crap. I just sucked it up and let my plants fire blindly. You should be spamming the free shrooms at the start and putting down at least a column (or two) of the sunwhatevers. Then repeaters or threepeaters all over the bitch. You can also use the cheapo-scaredy shrooms to get you through the first waves while you're saving cash for three/repeaters. And don't forget the torchwoods if you've got 'em for double damage.
usually use two lines of free shrooms behind a wall/tall nut with a real shooter behind all those things. waves are no problem with cherry bombs or doom shrooms
I got to level 3... something - dunno exactly - before I had to go to work.
So far, the Snow Peas have been my MVP unit. So awesome. I know I should be using Threepeaters and such, but I love the slows way, way too much.
Also, random question - how many Sunflowers does everyone like to use? I used to go with minimal amounts, but now I build 'em whenever I have spare suns - I try to aim for two or three colums of nothing but Sunflowers if possible, so I end up with like, 15 of 'em.

Jesus.
I usually end up with one back row of sunflowers, and those 6 pump out enough to let me end almost every level with a row of snow peas, a row of threepeaters/double shot plants (doubleshots on the top and bottom row, and 4 threepeaters in the middle rows), plus a thousand or more sun for the cherry bombs if needed.
I haven't ran into any problems yet, and I've only bought the extra seed slots (although that item that makes you shoot double the seeds looks awesome).
The best upgrade to purchase in my mind is the frozen watermelon, but that's such a late game thing. The upgrade that lets your replace damaged nuts/pumpkins is also really useful, as are the roof cleaners, since they're cheap and the bungie zombies can completely fuck up your defenses just out of sheer random chance.
Garlic really changes a lot of the game though. It forces zombies into another row after they take a bite of it, so with a couple on the top, middle, and bottom, you completely block those rows off and are free to fill the middle with threepeaters and the 2/4 rows with repeaters (and the top/bottom with sunflowers). Add flames, and they wreck everything thanks to the flame splash damage. Frozen watermelons for AoE freezing helps too. You just need to watch the garlic and replace them when needed. It does have some issues against vehicles/gargantuans. You can control them a little bit with cherry bombs and stuff, but some of the Survival Mode things will spawn catapults or gargantuans in every single row at once and then you're just screwed. The other 99% of the time though, garlic is god.

EDIT: Stop stealing Steam's bandwidth from me. I'm usually 500kb/s and now I'm only 50kb/s! </3
It's pretty awesome.

Wall-nuts are the key.
Also stage 4 is kicking my ass a bit. How's everyone doing that?

I saw that it was $20 on the popcap site and jumped on the $10 deal.
It must be a tool of evil.
I trust these plants not.
