the point of valve selecting indie maps to be "official" is so that extremely quality maps can be played by anyone without having to download it from a custom server or site first

I can see no possible way that egypt meets this criteria, certainly not above other maps (mariokart duh) so I must fall back on my previous position of Valve is dumb

also moocow if that wasn't enough of a hint "Oh come on!" is my in-game name right now

So I started playing demo a bit more because I like making people cry by just constantly spamming and getting 1337 kills. Problem is, I don't know what to do when I'm offensively ubered. Sure, the 'nades go towards the nearest target and I'll hit with maybe one or two.

But then I've got the stickies, and I don't know. I try to aim behind them and get them to walk into the stickies, but then if they have half a brain they walk around them, or even worse, go towards me. And launching one at a time just seems to do piss weak damage. What do I do?

Also, Sith/Rak, are there any console commands I should use? Because I can tell the stickies aren't where they actually look like they are, but I dunno what to do about it. (isn't it like cl_interp .08 if my ping is 70?)
Not sure buddy, don't use any con-schmole commands just try and shoot a sticky in front of them and one in back of them. Then you watch them make a decision as you shoot regular nades at them. Detonate and watch the gibs fly.

The problem with Egypt, as far as I can tell, is the one point which practically nobody can capture. The defending team gets this big, open area right next the spawn point with tons of defensive cover and sentry spots, but the attackers get two entrances with bad cover, minimal visibility until you're already getting shot by sentries, and a long walk from the spawn point.

Teleporters help mitigate this point, but a couple dedicated spies will either cause constant interruption of the teleporters or require the attention of a couple engineers plus helpers to keep the teleporters up. The defending team, however, just has to keep firing at the two entrances to pick out spies. Even if spies do manage to get through, the whole area is so open as to allow the entire defending team help each engineer defend their sentry.

Plus, it doesn't help that Egypt is exceptionally bland. There's something like four colors: stone block yellow, door yellow-brown, wood brown, and cave brown. Aside from the whole non-intuitive thing, it just looks terribly boring and dull.

Dustbowl gets played a bunch because it's a reasonably well-balanced series of maps for both defenders and attackers. People hate Egypt because it sucks.

Egypt also has spawn areas that are needlessly more complex than spawn->cabinet->exit which is always a bad sign. Why would you spawn me facing a dead end? Why is there even a dead end in spawn in the first place???

Not to mention the extremely slowly opening spawn doors that allow defense to use their position on higher ground to spam rockets and grenades (possibly kritzed!) into blu spawn for several seconds before blu even has a chance to actually walk outside.

every time i see that all i can hear in my head is 'the CLAMPS! heh heh heh. the CLAMPS! heh heh heh...' the movies were pretty good. i havent seen the newest one, but i enjoyed the first 3 enough to buy them in support.

egypt has some design elements that would have been great to implement in a finely polished style the way official valve maps are done. i wish valve would take the time to pick a map and then remake it entirely. egypt could be really cool if they tweaked it and made a palette for it that wasnt all of 6 colors. im sure with their experience they could easily find whats wrong and whats right and create a great map, all the while giving credit to the original mapper for the idea/template

    Spies are bullshit.

That's what I think about that. I ragequit last night because I got sick to death of being backstabbed. I know this will fall on deaf ears, and you will all say "QQ more noob", but I really think spies are a bullshit class. I die by spies by more than any class, and it doesn't seem to matter which class I play. I usually stick to medic or engy, but last night I felt the need to shoot stuff and switched to heavy. I still got backstabbed more than I got shot. The idea that a class can turn freaking invisible and just one shot you without any recourse on your part is complete bullshit. It changes the whole balance of the game, as a good spy can completely disrupt the other team and swing the battle in their favor within moments. I can't think of any other class with that capability. It's incredibly frustrating to know that even if you're shouting "SPY!" into the mic, your team is going to ignore the dude wiping out your entire front line. Jeepers it makes me want to punch a puppy.

I don't feel bad when I get outgunned by any other class. Sniper? Good shot. Pyro? Oops, I got to close. Heavy? My bad for walking out into the open like that. Demo? I can see your bombs, so shame on me. Soldier? Wow, nice rocket. Scout? You're too fast for my slow reflexes. Engy? Nice sentry placement there. Medic? I'm a newb for letting you get that close with the bonesaw.

Spy? SCREW YOU YOU CHEATING WHORE. /ragequit

Seriously, I have fun until a decent spy wrecks my enjoyment of this game and I go to bed mad rather than feeling relaxed. I may have to quit this game if this keeps up. It makes me sad because this game feels so well balanced to me except for the spy.

On a positive note, I changed tactics on engy and scored much higher. It really pays to be more aggressive and not get too attached to your sentry. Half the time I only created a level 1 and used it to harass more than as a strict defense. I caught a few people off guard by putting one in a strange place and then pretending to run away from a fight and have them walk right into it. You also get a lot more points for teleporter and dispenser use than I thought.

Feh. If you're talking heavy kills, you can't really compare the effort and risk needed to get a backstab off and get away again with that sniper wave-g'bye-t'yer-'ead-wanker bullshit.

I like spies though. Most aren't amazing, and so become fodder for my bonesaw. Yeah a good one will pretty much kill me every time, but so will a good sniper - and I know where he's standing.

I'm glad a change in engi tactics are working out, but seriously, nobody should have this much trouble with spies. Spies have to depend on a lot of random factors to not get caught and killed and are known for only getting in one kill before everyone on the team dogpiles them into a fine paste. It takes a spy something like, what, 2 seconds to fully uncloak, and at least from the spy perspective that feels like an eternity sometimes. Not to mention uncloaking right behind somebody usually spells death, so you usually have to cloak some distance away so that's a good amount of time to catch a spy unless you're attention is focused on a heavy or some shit.

Unfortunately a lot of the anti-spy tactics you just need to pick up from experience. Some heavies adopt what I call "SPY O VISION", where they just seem to have an instinct for, "HMM I HAVEN'T TURNED AROUND IN A WHILE, OH SHIT IT'S QUAZ LET'S FILL HIM WITH LEAD, GOOD DAY SIR TRY AGAIN!"

The best advice I can really think of is to make a habit of checking your six. The only time I'm not constantly doing a jump, 180, 180, to the front lines is when I'm scout.

If a spy gets a backstab off on a class that has one or more teammates in the general vicinity, and gets away scot-free, that could be good evasion on the part of the spy, but is usually just failure on the part of the team.

Voicechat and pyros are the worst enemies of the spy. If you're having spy troubles, communicate and conflagrate.

Basically half the halls are too dark to discern team colors (if you can see the other guy at all) and the other half are too color-lit to discern team colors. That and the uncanny resemblance to old UT2k4 maps and I stand firm in my assessment of Valve's decision-making skills.

Any sniper worth their salt should be counting under their breath anyway.

You can estimate the point at which a spy reaches you after respawn to within five seconds or so. I've surprised quite a few spies by turning around at the exact wrong moment with my knife out.

Bear in mind also that you will definitely be attacked by a spy in the second spawn wave. Count on it.

Seriously, some people are starting to get like built in spy detectors. I was playing on a pub server last night, I walk into a room fully stealthed with about 3/4 of my stealth bar still full, and there's an engineer with a sentry gun there. I stood there, not moving for 2 seconds cloaked just to see what he'd do. He stops, turns around, makes a beeline to me, and wrench-crit-kills me out of stealth.

Spies are always in danger and it's such a crap shoot these days with everyone spy checking like crazy. There will be times where I'll get into perfect backstab position and kill 4-5 medics/heavies all facing the same direction at once and come out feeling like a champ. And other times where I'll get headshot out of stealth, or eat a pipe bomb around a corner, or simply go around a corner and run into a flame spamming pyro.

The servers I play on have been kicking lots of players. Evidently this hack is getting pretty prevalent out there. I play spy a lot and have noticed a couple of players who aren't very good but ALWAYS kill the spy no matter what. They have made a bee line for me while I was cloaked to kill me.

Oh yeah... we were running a payload map last night (forget which one). And blue was rushing the map. On the way to the final point and they thought they were going to win. I was disguised behind their blob.

I got incredibly lucky and killed the entire team lol. We had crosstalk on and the nerdrage made me soooo happy in my pants.
