Need some help removing Spyware Protect 2009 from my pc. Looking for instructions on how to do so manually and not download a scanner to do it. I was able to delete the sysguard.exe part of it, ran spybot and virus searches and they had stuff but came up clean the second time through but the virus is still there.

I get this one all the time at work.

That should be enough to kill it.

I work for a university IT shop and I'd say about 40% of the student computers we fix have some sort of MS Antivirus 2007/2008/2009 infection. Our regiment for clearing the infection is:

    1. Run Spybot Search and Destroy in Safe Mode. Spybot can install in Safe Mode, so don't worry if you can't get all the way in to Windows on regular boot.

    2. When Spybot finishes, it'll prompt you to scan again when it reboots. Click the affirmative action to allow it.

    3. Reboot.

    4. Spybot will scan again.

    5. Reboot.

    6. Run Windows Defender.

    7. Reboot.

    8. Run Microsoft's free online scanner, Windows Live OneCare.

Most malware infections will be cleared up after those scans.

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

I loved the product so much, I bought the company!

Not really, but it's free and removes nearly everything. Absolutely love it, we use in our IT dept all the time. We've removed that, as well as every variation of it.

MistaCreepy's link has manual removal instructions.

Really though, Malwarebytes is the best way to get rid of it. Spybot and Symantec are both subpar, in my experience, and aren't going to be enough to remove most spyware.

The reason MalwareBytes is so nice is that it's VERY lightweight and quick. The installation is so small and insignificant.

But, if you're up for the challenge, yeah seek out manual removal instructions on various antivirus websites (symantec, etc)

I've often thought of infecting a zombie PC with the worst of the worst and just going to town on it, putting myself up to the challenge of cleaning it...
