Primer: I'm running Windows XP with comcast cable internet, using a surfboard modem and netgear wireless router. my pc is connected through a wireless usb adapter (which has worked flawlessly since the day I bought it) and my xbox is connected to the router directly. I've run as many virus scanners, adware removers, and system updates as I am able to.
I boot up my xbox 360 this morning and quickly note that I'm not connected to xbox live. I sign out and sign back in. I connect. No big deal.
I decide to hop on my computer and open internet explorer. My home page never loads. I go to google. After shuffling it's feet, IE loads google. Some of the assets don't load. I do a random quick search and results pop up quickly enough.
After a few minutes though, I find most web pages either load too slow and incomplete, or don't load at all. Blank white browser. For giggles I power cycle both my modem and my router. My modem takes an unusually long amount of time to secure a signal. My router seems to behave normally. I switch between the xbox 360 and my computer, experiencing varying degrees of unreasonably slow data transfer. In most cases the 360 gives up and keeps my disconnected. World of Warcraft shits out before I can get in game.
Lastly, I decide to simplify the problem and make a direct connection to my pc through a brand new lan cable from my modem right into the back of my pc. I enable my lan connection, power cycle my modem, and reboot. EXACT same internet performance. Penny Arcade requires multiple refreshes before it resembles the web page correctly, and some pages never end up loading.
DSL reports says my DL speed is 52 percent below average and my upload speed is 97 percent below average.
What in the world could be going on?

I would try to power cycle and see if that changes anything, or better yet pull your router out and plug your PC directly into the cable modem and see if your problem persists (comcast will have you do this as well)
If your problem doesn't go away, call comcast and complain. That kind of performance is unacceptable. Honestly? If you can dump comcast and get fios, I recommend it. Comcast has become so shoddy as of lately that they aren't worth dealing with anymore.
I've power cycled so many times now I've lost count. Each time it takes a long time for the Internet light to become solid, and I've simplified my connection down to having the coaxial cable from the wall to the modem and the modem to the PC via lan cable.
the xbox 360 having connectivity issues seems to be the control in confirming my suspicions that its my connection and not my hardware. I felt i got nowhere with comcast over the phone. I'll try again tomarrow.
Anyone heard of Conficker? I don't have it (used a few removal tools just in case) but was wondering if some servers in my area are battling it right now. Maybe I'm just insane. None of my friends in the area are having issues.
