I hear that the PC version of Braid only let's you use XInput controllers.

This is unsurprising to me, though. Seems to be par for the course for most games coming out now, especially (oddly) indie ones.

What controller do you have? I have an 360 controller emulator that worked fine in Braid and my Logitech Rumblepad II.

Braid has like four buttons you use. Just go with the keyboard.

Well, you could still use Xpadder to emulate the keyboard controls and skip trying to emulate the 360 controller all together, both methods would end up with you controlling the game with a controller anyway.

More like 6, but still the arrow keys + shift + space is hardly asking for much.

Then again I've never understood the whole "use a controller instead of keyboard/mouse" thing. It's like people want to handicap themselves and remove the flexibility available through a massive number of buttons to assign.

becuz a controler feel smore relasitic its like ur pulling teh triggar. an using a mouse is 2 ez and nto relastic at all lolz pc nerds.

Seriously though, some games are just better with a controller. Like platformers, which our friend Braid is a representative of. Although, I like using d-pads for 2D stuff and the 360's d-pad bloooooooooowwwws, so it's a toss up.

    Blasphemy.

What's the name of the emulator again? I thought I bookmarked it before, but I didn't. I think I'm going to try that route first. But I may break down at some point and just buy a damn 360 pad.

This is what you're looking for, well until you get yourself a real 360 gamepad anyway :)

Quick question on the 360 game pad for the PC, cause I'm getting closer and closer to getting one myself. Do any wired 360 controllers work or do you have to buy the one specifically made for the PC? I've never seen a wired 360 controller, so I don't know if it's regular USB or something proprietary. I'm not even sure where a wired 360 controller plugs in.

As for GFWL, I think it's kind of unnecessary. Especially with Dawn of War II where I have the Steam Client over the GFWL client over the game. But, it doesn't seem to hinder performance, I now have 2 games that use it, so I don't care. It's pretty harmless. And it's a lot easier to send messages over Xbox live with a keyboard then controller.

All Xbox 360 accessories are USB I think? So just getting a wired one should be fine. You'll need a special (super ugly and overpriced) dongle if you want to go with the wireless.

Four arrow buttons doesn't give nearly the precision an analog stick does when playing a driving game like Burnout Paradise or Wheelman. And the aforementioned platformer thing. If you play a platformer with a controller and then a keyboard, you will know where we are coming from.

XInput is way easier to program for than DirectInput's gamepad API.

I'd like to add that no modern platformers are so incredibly fucking picky about the EXACT pixel you have to land on to complete a jump/whatever any more so you don't need any extra awesome precision. I'm not trying to play I Wanna Be The Guy.

And yeah, I've played tons of sonic and mario, I still prefer the D-pad, which is essentially four arrow buttons...

I'm happy using the keyboard for platformers, it works fine, and I usually prefer it to a gamepad. But then again, I've been doing it since before Commander Keen, so maybe I'm just used to it.

The dongle is pretty fugly, but they sell them bundled with controllers, and the nice thing is that they also support the wireless headset (with or without the controller), which can then be dedicated to apps like Ventrilo, while still having your game audio on your sound system.

Yeah 3D platformers need more control since you're working off a 3rd dimension. Those I usually stick to a gamepad. Although I did actually play through Sands of Time quite happily with keyboard and mouse, the controls worked really well for me. Something a bit more complex like DMC 4 though, it's best to use a gamepad.

From what I know about the series, its essentially a coaching and management game, and not a typical sports game. You don't control a player on the field.

I may be wrong, because I never bothered to look at the series any further than that.

Yeah, it's basically Hearts of Iron: Soccer Edition... only without the map. The whole thing is text-based, featuring a basic graphics engine for displaying the matches of your team.

I could never get into it, but it's pretty popular with soccer nuts. My best friend owns like the last 5 editions.
