firefox refuses to stay logged in [solved]

EskimoDaveEskimoDave Registered User regular
edited April 2009 in Help / Advice Forum
Firefox won't stay logged in to any site. As soon as the browser is closed I have to relogin to everything. Cookies are enabled. I always check the "remember me" box. It remembers my username and passwords to sites so all I have to do is type an 'e' in the username field then arrow down and hit enter.
I had some internet issues which resulted in me resulted in me having no internet for 8 days and this problem started after that.

Its starting to get frustrating.

If "Always clear my private data when I close Firefox" is checked, you want to un-check it.

If i were you, I just would leave firefox open until you leave. That way, if anyone else got on your computer (Friends, roomate, parents, children, etc) they wouldn't be able to mess with your online things [friends can do terrible things to myspace/facebook profiles].

Then, close it when you're completely finished with everything- youwon't be furstrated by constantly re-entering your password and you'll stilll have the extra security from other people.

well, that works for friends and roomates, parents and potentially children might not like that so much lol.

Still that's a good idea if the op is interested in that

although... what happens if someone manually powers off your comp (i'm guessing you have profiles with passwords upon load up or something?)

if they turn it off or switch users it just logs you off entirely.

passwords on load up are always mandatory

Not on my computer- I'm not sure why either. My XP has never had a password for on load up.

no windows l locks it if it is your computer.
try resetting all of your settings in options, that usually does it. if not just reinstall it. everything else is just arduous, tedious and unnecessary. everything can be solved with either of those

I've had that same problem. A clean re-install of firefox fixed it.

I sometimes get this problem after a minor Firefox update (3.0.x to 3.0.x+1). Usually deleting my cookies file and relogging in from scratch fixes it.

I don't need to worry about that. Plus its a bad habit of mine to close the browser the instant I'm done with it.

may also be a fault of your isp. if you are on a dynamic ip or behind a firewall/dhcp, your sessions may be expiring as you are not technically hitting the site from the same ip address. depends on how the host is set up.

When you uninstalled Firefox you should have gotten an option to delete everything that was associated with it, did you check yes? I had this same issue, I deleted EVERYTHING, then reinstalled and it is working. There's also a walk through for deleting your Firefox profile which I was told will also resolve this issue, however, if you mess it up you could also end up deleting things that shouldn't be removed, so it's a "at your own risk" thing.

    Deleting Profile

**I didn't do this, I simply deleted firefox and checked yes to delete my profile settings when I did so.**

    Assuming Windows XP, go to

    C:\Documents and Settings\{your windows user name}\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\{profile name}

    and delete cookies.sqlite.

For the profile name, you probably want {bunch of random characters}.default. Most likely, it will be the only one present.

There is no application data folder. I also have no files named 'cookies' on my PC and there is nothing obvious in the mozilla folder.

I also have never used the profile manager thing ever, so I don't think that could be it.

Elin, I was afraid to do that cause I don't wanna lose bookmarks or the saved information. Some sites I have to use different names and passwords and I can never remember which ones. Will it delete that shit if I check it?

I use Foxmarks so I never worry about losing bookmarks. I highly recommend it. You may lose saved usernames and passwords, but they may be saved with windows.

And yes, if you check it everything is nuked from orbit. It's also the only way to fix the problem. So get the addon Foxmarks, snyc your bookmarks. It'll save those. Try to write down your usernames and passwords and then nuke it.

do what i do, make an email address no one knows about with a different password than the rest, then send a message to yourself with all of your usernames and passwords

    then nuke firefox.

in fact i recommend this even for people not nuking firefox.

years after i stopped playing, i still have my runescape username and password. thanks middleschool. might never use it again but it's nice to have

Turn on View Hidden Files/Folders (Tools/Folder Options/View/ Show hidden files and folders | That's in your folder window, not firefox ) , I had this same problem and I just did what yurnamehere said and it fixed it for me, but the Application Data folder was one of the hidden ones

Thanks guys! That worked. I feel like stupid for not realizing that it was hidden. 'Cause I knew that folder existed.
