oh and it's awesome how people are preemptively counter-picking with blanka based on my claw icon and title. out of my 6 ranked matches today, 4 were against him
too bad im practicing with dictator today
You scare me, you are the 360 version of me. Hello Bizarro Grove.
But seriously, I finally landed on Bison as my 2nd about a week ago. What are the odds we both main vega, 2nd with Bison. You are good people.
My favorite anti-shoto tactic is to do the neutral kick off the walljump (using mk or lk to hit the wall lower) and then, when they DP on reaction do his j.hk x 2, and his Crane super/ultra.
It's also easier to land the Mantis super off the Crane c.lk, plus it sets you up better for follow up (and does more damage)
I'm still trying to find consistent setups for his Crane hp and c.hp, because they're two of the most damaging normals in the game.
That's a great fake out. Gonna have to use that.
Crane c.hp I've used to poke an incoming helicopter kick a few times. With it's range maybe it'd be useful after a roll when the other guy thinks they're far enough from you that they're safe?
Caenem on
But you, pig, are a lucky one. Tell us what we wish to know, and you may yet keep your bacon.

It's a great punisher for any whiffed hurricane kick because it does Tiger Uppercut damage, but for srk's and flash kicks c.mp xx hp.Roll does more, hits faster, and is safer. I think it's best for punishing the hurricane moves but that's the only time I can find to use it. It's also pretty good for hitting FA's because it retreats back so far and leaves an intimidating chunk of glowing, transparent health there, but if they're a good turtle that just puts them halfway to ultra territory.
ugh. Just had a near perfect against a sagat with fuerte when he disconnected. LMS Joe Mamma is a scrub.
Gotta wall of shame those jerks.
On another note:
Holy shit is Gen a fun character to mess around with. I'm in the early stages with him but I have had some awesome matches with him. It is even more amazing when you start pulling off his hard challenge combos in match play. KKK stance jumping medium kick d+lk focus attack cancel dash into KKK ultra is just rewarding as shit, even though the damage isn't as incredible as seeing the work in action.
I do need help though with getting close to opponents and not just jumping in and eating a shoryuken or something anti air. I main Dhalsim so this close range game is foreign to me. I'm very reliant on his focus attack to bait or catch people off guard since it has bigger range than it appears. So my offense is a lot of that and throws with steady cross ups. Any quick tips on the man are appreciated.
Straight-drop Oga will beat a DP, as will going past them and dropping backward.

Thanks for that and all the other Gen info posted right above. I've had some solid progress made when fighting what I think are solid competitors in player matches. Much more tweaking is necessary and I think I have the advantage of people never having seen a gen before. I also need to not bother with desperation Ultras or being blowing the KKK ultra since its range is different than I always want it to be.
Now I got wrecked by this dude in player matches. Wrecked as in he won all the matches but we had some close ass fights, I thought it was all good. I get a message complaining about only using gen, and thus making me a 'stupid bitch'. Asshole yes, but is there Player Match etiquette that should exist? Should I not spend all my time trying to learn a character as to not bore the other random person? Just curious how all you go about doing things.
First off, let me state that I am bad at this game and just want to complain about something you have all gotten past already. I am working my way through arcade mode on medium and Balrog is a real nuisance to beat. He always screws me over with the constant spin evasion move. He owns me because I am to predictable and reliant on certain moves. Right now, I am just trying to be able to do special moves reliably.
Anyways, this game is pretty sweet. I wish that Madcatz would restock on the fightsticks.

don't play the computer! arg, it only gives you bad habits.
madcatz is making more, they're just hard to find because people(gamestop employees) are still ebaying them.
training mode with input display on is the best play to practice moves
play pa people ect, ect.
I am thinking of picking up a new character, is Balrog a good character to pick? I want a character who is good but not impossible to control like C.Viper.

To go along with that. Use zangief play on easiest, get to seth, select needed character to use to unlock hidden characters. Repeat. Never play arcade again, unless you want to go for achievements or you're killing time waiting to be challenged in a ranked/player match.
Keep working on your Dhalsim, Marredjin - while he might have some trouble with Fuerte, Dhalsim's superior damage can easily turn the tide.
Very nice Viper, Aumni - I'll have to look up more into the crane style to see if that would work better for Gen.
I have no trouble running away from Viper's disgusting attack mix-ups with Fuerte but Gen is definitely lacking there even though Gen's damage output is really good.

ive been loving balrog... i normally played with ryu and sagat, but i got kinda bored and decided to try blanka and balrog out... i think ive gotten a bit better with blanka than i am w/ ryu.
but balrog is really awesome imo... SAY GOODNIGHT CHUMP

Balrog's really good - his walking speed is good and cr.jabs are so fast that you can easily play a mix-up of walk up throw and cr.jab, cr.jab headbutt.
He also has an EZ mode ultra -> cr.jab, cr.jab, headbutt, ultra.
Other than that, his dashes are hard to punish after blocking and they can even be armored as well.
He's even got two armor breakers : TAP and one of his dash punches.
His health is the same as Sagat's so you can afford to make a bit of mistakes here and there and his damage output is massive.
His only weaknesses are:
1)weak wake-up options:
Headbutt can be avoided easily just by crouching and it's slow - if you do meaty attacks on Rog's wake-up and then just crouch, it can beat the headbutt or the headbutt will fly over harmlessly allowing you to punish pretty heavily.
2) His focus attack is one of the worst in the game - it has so little range that it's worthless to use unless the opponent's directly in kissing distance.
IIRC, 2 of balrog's dash punches are armor breaking his torpedo (df+K) and the overhead (df+P(hold))... also his TAP. Not including reversal moves.
i think his headbutt is too... though i could be mistaken...
Nope, not headbutt - it might be because he was doing it as reversal on wake-up. All special attack moves done on wake-up is considered armor breaking.

Definitely good mixups on your Fuerte. Gen is always an odd fight. When I said I was going to sleep I actually went to ebay and bought a TE stick for 220. Now I can go to sleep soon.
Got back from a tourney today that left me pretty tired - no where to sit and only one monitor meant I was there for 4 hours before my match and it woulda been another 2 until my 2nd match. I left early but met some really cool guys who don't live too far. So I've found some semi-local comp!
Another tournament comming up in Wallingford, CT at Digital Mayhem next saturday, gonna be a blast there.
Also, Gen is really really hard to play. He was in SF3 too right?
he was in SF1, but not playable... then later in the Alpha series...
and he seems overly complicated to play... i kinda wonder why they bothered with him.
I'd say with Gen just start out with his mantis stance - his jumps are too good and coupled with his awesome air normals means you can jump over fireballs and do cross-ups very easily.
His scrub combo (I call it scrub because that's the only thing I can do) : HP, Lightning Hands HP can do pretty good damage.
He also has a good fast focus attack with decent range.
He also rarely needs EX meter so you can store it to do super combos.
Obviously, if you want to explore him, you'll also need to use his Crane stance and be able to mix it up between Crane and Mantis.
But if you're just starting out, the mantis stance can easily obliterate opponents.
Anyone else have trouble connecting to certain people on xbox live? For the most part I am fine but with some friends I can never connect. I never had a problem before this game but I can't even form a party with some people.
Jesus fuck tits what is Balrog suppose to do against guile? He spams his fireball and if I get close I eat a kick. I can't beat guile with any character, that mother fucker is invinceable. No matter waht he has no weakness.
Bait a flashkick? Oh wait its range is half the screen.
Why is this game so easy in training? I can pull off link cancel link canel link combos but I cant even do an ultra in multi. Balrog has so few options against shotos.

You gotta be patient and corner Guile. Block or FA some of the sonic booms - he also shouldn't be able to jump in at you as long as you maintain proper zoning.
Your cr.HP beats almost all jump ins and your cr.jab is fast enough to beat throw attempts.
Time in the TAP so that you can catch him while he's doing sonic boom up close to hasten the process of cornering him. Only jump over his sonic booms on proper distances don't do it when Guile's flash kick or cr.HP can hit you.
Once you're up close, you have the much more superior tools and options to deal with any of Guile's options.
The key thing in the match-up is: be patient, jump over the booms when you're outside Guile's flashkick or cr.HP range or focus absorb it and go forward bit by bit. Maintain proper discipline of your zoning game because sooner or later Guile is going to get frustrated or whiff something which you can punish.
Once Guile is knocked down, his options are very limited especially against Boxer.
