It's a tad convoluted, but not that bad. You buy or find scrolls which are blueprints for various items. Take it to the store and build it if you have the materials for it. Hell, even materials can be built from other materials.
Hm, There's no way to trade scrolls huh? I was so desparate for the Red Mage gear that I hired the one in the game, jacked his clothes, and left him at the guild with travelers gear and a bronze sword. If anyone can point me in the direction where I can get it I'd be grateful.

Basically, in town you can either buy it from the left shop, or have it crafted from the right shop. Speaking of gear, when you start getting gems, don't hesitate to use them. Removing them from gear doesn't destroy the gem or anything, so you can basically just transfer a gem from one upgrade to the next. And removing Overpower gems (they increase an item's maximum possible level) won't cause an item to lose levels or anything, so once an item is maxed out, you can feel free to have the gem removed without hurting the item at all.

I don't think you can trade scrolls, but you can drop gear for others to pick up, if that's any bonus.
