I switched to Google Voice on my phone for voicemail and text messaging, and sadly I'm not that impressed. The voicemail notifications are often a half hour late or more, even if I have it set to check for new messages every 15 minutes. The transcriptions can be total nonsense too.
Wife said: "Hello, it's me, call me, I forgot my keys, heh heh, bye."
Voice transcription: "The to take on the case for Alan. Keyes, since it's all about. Bye."
It's not like she has a strange accent or was talking quietly or anything -_- still, I think I'll stick with Voice, because it's still nice to be able to see SOME sort of visual record of my voicemails. They're *usually* vaguely understandable.

That's okay, a friend of mine just farted into the mic on my voicemail and it transcribed it as "Hello."
Does this count against your current phone/minute plan? Does the web app use VOIP or the iPhone dialer?
Also, any calls received would still count against minutes, right? Since technically you're on the phone
It counts against your phone's plan.
Now, some folks with a 'My Circle' type plan can kinda finagle their way into free minutes, by adding your google voice number to your circle, and then setting google voice's caller ID setting to show your google voice number rather than the caller's number. Your mileage may vary, though.

No mileage to vary, just add the gv number to your A-list, free out going/incoming calls (if you make people call your gv #)

My brother sent me an invite to GV but every time I look at the list of phone numbers, I'm gripped with a paralyzing anxiety over choosing the right phone number...:(
I'll follow up when I pick one if anyone else wants invites.
Yeah, the transcriptions can be really hit or miss, it depends on the person. When I get a call from my dad the transcription is horrible, if I get a call from my mom it's 100% accurate.

Also, the transcriptions don't transcribe the word "fuck". My outgoing message to my cousin tells him to leave a message then go fuck yourself. He always concludes his messages with "i'm going to go fuck myself now" and no matter how accurate the rest of the transcription is, it never gets fuck right.

I think that is more of a precaution of them accidentally translating "sock" into "fuck" rather then the other way around. They don't want someone wigging out when fuck is accidentally transposed into an otherwise innocent sentence. Therefore, you will probably not see "fuck" ever properly transposed.
I can get into the Google Voice website, but it doesn't actually have any buttons to make calls or text messages. I've never had an invite, so I don't know if I need one in order to have all the features enabled. Anybody know if that is the case? If so, does anybody have an invite?

EDIT: Got an invite. Thanks Thinkjunk!

I got an invite from bloodatonement.
Thanks!
So if you're a student, get to it!
Also, I've found the transcipts to be pretty so-so, but perhaps most of my friends just mumble too much on the phone?
Luckily, it transcribes just enough key words to get the point of the voicemail across.

And I assume you need an invite in order to get a number?
it's open to the public
just go to the website
then sign up/register/whatever it has there
if you're having issues, try it on a different computer
