I'm having a really hard time with the first Selvaria mission, because all the Imperial units you get are terrible.
It's actually a lot easier than it appears.
Basically, the only units that should be doing anything other than sitting around defending your base camp are Selvaria and your engineer. Those two should be rushing for the camp.
Also, make sure to take out the enemy tank to the west of your base ASAP. Then position your tank near the west side enemy bases so that all it rapes their reinforcements. Leave a bunch of Shocktroopers (and maybe a sniper, for those pesky scouts) at your home base and you should be fine. Really, just use Selvaria grab the enemy's base. She can easily kill tanks by darting around behind them and shooting the radiators. Don't forget to bring your engie along though, as you'll need him to clear the barricades.
Just went through Selvaria's 4th mission twice. I cut my time down from 5 turns (B rank) to 4, and still got the B rank >.< I dunno how the heck I'm supposed to do it in 3.
Still, it's pretty awesome to be playing with
Selvaria all Valkyried-out.

I fired this game up today for the first time, and a lot of it is making me cringe. The gameplay is great, and I'll probably play it through because of that, but I'm pretty sure I'm just getting sick of the generic anime-isms that plague japanese games.
I don't know, I think at this point I no longer have a tolerance for that style of writing.

Eh, the beginning part of the game (and some of the optional side quests) has much more JRPG-ness in it than later levels. The story progresses very well basically from the half-way point on, getting much more serious towards the end. Keep in mind it IS still alternate-history / fantasy, so not all the themes they explore will be entirely based in reality (though a lot of it is allegory).
Overall I'm not a big fan of JRPGs either, but VC managed to win me over with its engaging story and interesting characters.

I left that out because he had already agreed that the gameplay is great, but I guess it's never a bad thing to reiterate :P

Wow. The Valkyria Anime ED sequence is really cute. I really love the long vertical shot of the Squad 7 members. Especially Edy beating on a very happy Homer and Jann fawning over Largo plowing veggies.
I dunno, retarded 1337 speak for Halo 3? It just sounded stupid enough to fit in with the rest of the post, so I included it.
On topic:
The Selvaria DLC is kickass. It's so good it makes me tempted to buy the Edy DLC as well, especially since I got extra moneyz this week due to working on a public holiday. How hard is the mission, exactly?

Challenging but fun, it's a good couple of hours (plus it has four different endings depending on rank upon completion)

Just ran through Selvaria's missions once today.
Didn't do so hot in the first mission (C Rank), but I did grab an A rank for Rout (along with killing Damon's tank...and getting my two leader units killed )
Now got that lovely unlockable weapon and handed it to Wendy. Now she really has the power.

Though the Imps do have a Sniper with over 300 HP. It's a nice change of pace for handling them. Now, if only he could actually kill anybody without wasting 3 CP.

Ugh. I need help on Rout the Gallian forces. They keep on capturing Selvaria.
Wanna know what I did?
Pretended Johann's a ninja. I had him run along to the west, and at the end of his first turn I threw a grenade that hit the shocktrooper under the wall. The trooper dodged, but I just threw another one next turn that killed him. Then I had Johann run along the south edge of the trench (I ran into the trench my first time - big mistake, since I forgot that the center of the map is actually above the trench). Anyway, I just stayed far enough away and no one hit me, and I got to her on turn one or two. The real problem was that I had Johann exposed then, but Selvaria killed everything around her.
that Oswald the Iron sounded familiar. Not only that, but a similarly named Ace appears in Expert Skirmish 1: Oswald the Alloy. Sounds like he got promoted.

HEH! I managed to bag the sniper atop the large tower in the lower left with 1 CP once, in mission 1. Snipers were decent in the next mission, but not quite as critical.
I beat Skirmish 1 on Expert. 5 Turns, B ranking. Spoilers for what I did.
It was hard as balls at first and I took a lot of losses (Thankfully no deaths), but I managed to squeeze my way through the lower right camp after some trial and error, then get the next flag. Jann was my MVP- he was one-shotting every Tank Destroyer he set his sights on. He and Largo took out the gatling guns and held their ground. Mortar fire didn't faze them. Alicia chucked a grenade to get rid of some sandbags in the bridge, then it was a careful process from there on out. I think Homer took someone out though I can't quite remember. Oswald the Alloy went down thanks to Marina's persistance. He thankfully didn't duck her two headshots.
By the end, Welkin took out the last scout after everyone but himself and Marina and Largo were KO'd. Good times.
Now I'm on mission 2. Took out the ace sniper with a couple of grenades from the rooftop. Not a hard deal at all. Now to find a way to press on to the square...

I had a tricky time with that one.
My idiot self ran trough the EASTERN end. Musaad's turf. I had to walk him out in front of Musaad, heal him to full, quickly end his turn. Then immediately activate Johann again, destroy the barricade, and run for it. I barley had any health left.
Also, who thinks that there will be Selvaria x Johann fanart?
There surely already is.
Anyway, for Rout of the Gallian Forces...
Use your snipers to clear out any ground troops you can. Scouts, Troopers, anything will wtfpwn Johan with interception fire before you can switch to firing mode.
To combat this, I sent down a Trooper, a Scout and (I think a lancer... was there a tank? I forget) had Johann go around the east side of the map, to get to Selvaria in turn 2.
For me the hardest part of that map was protecting Johann after Selvaria goes on the move. I had to kill every scout, every trooper for a hundred yards or they would find him and one-shot him during the enemy's turn.

Okay, someone somewhere on these forums told me that this game could be had for 30 bucks. I went to 4 different EBStops today (two different malls, each with two stores each), and they were all still listed as full price. I asked the guy behind the counter at one and he tapped on the keyboard for a second and confirmed it was still 60, so he was either making up to not bother with me, or I just live in a bad area for game prices or something.

Get it for 60 bucks. It's well worth paying full price for it.
I paid full price twice for VC because my PS3 hates me and scratched my first copy. I'd buy a third copy in a heartbeat as a backup, if I ever came upon one.
Also, Damon can go fuck himself. I hate him SO much.
was fun! I B-ranked it on my first try (the sniper on the hill took out Marina ). The next time around, I knew what to do, and with the use of frequent saves, I was able to see all of the endings. They're all worth seeing, but the A-rank is the best.
Behind Her Blue Flame
I've A-ranked the two main missions, but haven't unlocked the 3rd one yet.
For the 2nd mission, I went around the east side of the wall, so that meant sending a lancer to blow up the tank, and a scout/sniper combo to take out Musaad (admittedly, there was a lot of saving/loading here). At one point, I tried mortaring Musaad, but he'd dodge that too. Argh!
These missions showed just how spoiled I've been by elite-level units and royal weapons. Taking out the gatling turret (and shocktrooper) in the middle of the map would be trivial with an elite scout, but here it took a little more planning and luck.
On the second "?non-standard?" Selvaria mission (the "Mop up remaining forces" mission), I simply finished it in 3 turns with 2 scouts, Johann, and Selvaria.
Sony needs to make some more avatars for PSN. Especially some VC avatars.
:^:
Also, Manwiththemachinegun, it's awesome. Operation Edy is straight-up fanservice and a little short compared to Selvaria's pack, but Edy + Sel + EX mode = a pretty good deal for $15.00.

She can easily kill tanks by darting around behind them and shooting the radiators. Don't forget to bring your engie along though, as you'll need him to clear the barricades.

Amen.
Died, like, "Oh I see the light", followed by their body turning wireframe and collapsing?
You'll never see them again. Until the new game. But no, this doesn't affect the story in the slightest.

I agree. I hated him ever since I first saw him in the main story, but the DLC added a whole new level of hate.
