Let's Play Silent Hill Homecoming - Set 18 - The end

edited May 2009 in Games and Technology
Hello and welcome to the Let's Play of Silent Hill Homecoming!

942060101684front.jpg

The 6th horror game in my series of LP’s. Thanks to Penumbra for making me terrified again. Evil game.

This is a ‘blind’ run. I.e I have never played the game before. So this should be barrel of laughs…for you guys.

What is Silent Hill Homecoming?

The player assumes the role of the protagonist, Alex Shepherd, a Special Forces soldier who returns home from an overseas tour of duty to find that his father and younger brother are missing, and that his mother has gone into catatonia. Alex begins to search for his brother, leading him to Silent Hill after searching his hometown of Shepherd's Glen.

Overall gameplay is similar to past entries in the series. The player, as Alex, explores the various environments and locales, searching for clues to advance the plot, such as photographs, drawings and other items which are placed inside Alex's journal, which the player may read at any time.
Thanks wiki!

Hopefully this will be as terrifying as previous entries to the series.

How do I watch then?

Don't worry too much about it. He's really a Youtube LPer though he did always make threads about his LPs in SA until people just got sick of them.

As for your current LP, would I be spoiling much if I intend to play the game later?

Goddamnit Helloween, why did you have to pick the game I've been fighting with myself to finish? Now I have to play it just to keep ahead of you, since you passed me up on both Overture and Black Plague (I hate moving grumblegrumble....). Anyway, this is probably my most anticipated LP of yours, as I know a good chunk of what's in store for you. :D

Oh, protip: The nurses are attracted to your flashlight, so if you wanna get the jump on them, just turn it off, then you can damn near run straight up on them. If you find yourself overwhelmed, turn off your flashlight, and run away, then slowly walk away from the point to which you ran, as they will begin to freeze in place when there is no longer a visual/aural stimuli for them.

That's pretty much the best area of the game. Certainly the most true to older Silent Hills in terms of bleak and solitude mood.

Yeah, I loved that I just crawled through that whole damn place, just knowing that something was going to be around that next corner. Then, after forever of that, I realize, "Wait....there are no enemies here." Just in time to let my guard down, grab an item, turn around, BAM! Enemy in my face. Scared the bejesus out of me.

Initial Homecoming impressions, it doesn't look *that* bad, granted, this is via Youtube high quality, but still.

I *do* like the transition effect, and I liked it in the movie. It's really interesting to think about reality peeling away right in front of your eyes. Though, uh, the main character didn't really seem to... respond to that at all, did he? In fact, he didn't seem to have much of a reaction to a buxom, face bandaged nurse shakily approaching him with a knife either.

I did kind of like the effect in the room with the static-y TV and the two nurses, it seemed like they captured the creepy stop-motion jitters of the nurses really well. Though it just occured to me that if the presence of monsters causes audio static in radios, could it cause audio/visual static in televisions as well? It seems to me that it could've been handled much less ham-fisted if when you killed the last nurse, the TV suddenly faded dark, and then perhaps you could investigate it and he could comment on how it wasn't plugged in in the first place.

For the beginning of a Silent Hill game, it *seems* to have really started off fast, which just strikes me as odd I guess.

Though the appearance of what seems to be Pyramid Head already and throwing a wheelchair at you, just seems to me like picking parts of previous games that were unsettling and throwing them around as series set pieces anymore. I suppose the Nurses fit into that aspect as well. It just really seems to be getting away from what Silent Hill *seemed* to originally be about, the idea that versions of Silent Hill were experienced and somewhat crafted around the protagonist's own faults and demons. At least I presume that's what SH2 involved... I never have gotten very far in it. I should start it back up again sometime.

Which sliding block puzzle is this?

Its the one that has single, square blocks, as well as rectangle blocks, that you must move around to form the picture. Oh, and some of those rectangles are vertical, others are horizontal. Worst game puzzle ever, and if you mess it up, you have to go through 2 or 3 loading screens to get it to reset.

And to Helloween (didn't want my previous message to get too long), a start to what will likely be another classic LP, as blind runs often are.

I've now watched all of your LPs except The Suffering I'm pretty sure, just finished Dark Corners of the Earth the other night. Oh, and I'm only partway through Dead Space, but I just bought it on Steam and am waiting for it to download now, and I didn't want to spoil myself any further, was watching it to get a better feel for the game and I think it seems really interesting.

Very strange path led me to your LPs, in that sometime last year I decided to play through McGee's Alice which I had sitting around for far too long, and noticed your LP of it, though in what order now I don't remember. I believe by the time I saw the thread, you had already finished the game, so all the parts were there, I usually just played a while and then watched yours up to the point where I stopped. It was all good fun.

Well, more recently, I believe it was just after I played through co-op RE5 with a friend of mine, it made me think some more about RE:Remake, and I decided to try to find some videos on it, ended up by chance finding the beginning of katrinonus' LP of RE:Remake, but since I was thinking of playing through the copy I'd owned for quite a while, I didn't really want to spoil it. I happened to notice that she had also done an LP of Haunting Ground, which was a game I remembered seeing on the shelves and thought it seemed interesting but had never played it. The run was quite entertaining, and I recalled that she mentioned Helloween4545 quite a few times, which made me think it was who had done the great McGee's Alice LP I had watched last year.

Sure enough, looking into that lead me to your Penumbra Overture LP, which I got caught up on when you were shortly into Black Plague and actually had to wait for updates. I went back through and watched your FEAR LP (which I played myself a few years ago) and it was quite an entertaining refresher.

So yeah, strange path, but anyway, another vote of support in all these rather horror themed LPs you've been doing, keep up the good work!
