So, Jaws Unleashed is terrible, as I've recently discovered. Still, I think the idea of playing as an impressive monster, running around chewing on hapless civilians and sowing havoc/terror is a sound one. With that said, here's the question:

Are there actually any worthwhile games out there that will satisfy this desire to monstrously destroy an innocent population? Something that isn't Rampage, and something that I can actually play now (Prototype looks great, but is currently unavailable)? PC, 360, or PS2 is preferable, but for the sake broadening the discussion, entries from any machine work. I don't think there are really that many games of this kind out there.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto got around to being monster-movie fun sometimes. Debuted on PC, then got a PS2 port pretty early on in its career.

There were some Godzilla games that weren't awful. You can pick up Robot Alchemic Drive (somewhere, I'm sure) and go rogue and destroy Japan as a giant robot if you want to.

Especially if you're looking at Prototype.

Prototype looks to basically be Hulk:UD plus Zombies and shapeshifting in HD.

God I'm looking forwards to Prototype so much

I have the PC version of Jaws Unleashed I found at Big Lots of all places for like 5 bucks. I thought it was actually pretty fun. The controls were extremely frustrating, but when it worked it was fun.

It did work a lot better on PC, but I own the PS2 version which compounds the already clumsy controls with... more clumsiness. Also, the fact that you're as fragile as spun glass, even after upgrading your health a couple of levels, is just anti-fun. I really, really wanted to enjoy that game, but it just didn't want me to.

How likely is it that I'd be able to find Ultimate Destruction or Citizen Kabuto nowadays? i never tried them the first time they came around, and I've heard a lot about both.

You can buy Giants off of GOG.com for $6 these days. As for Ultimate Destruction, it shouldn't be too hard to find the PS2 version. I remember the Xbox version ran slightly better but I can't remember if its Backwards Compatible or not.

War of the Monsters on PS2 is an all time classic. You aren't really directly killing tons of innocents but as you fight other monsters you are leveling entire city blocks bit by bit and smashing screaming hoards under foot.

    Here's a trailer:

I've got a sealed copy of PS2 Kabuto around here if you want it. PM address if you want, but I understand if you don't feel comfortable. I picked up the PC version when it was new and enjoyed it, then got the PS2 one on the cheap for some reason but never opened it. IIRC you have to run through the missions of two races before you get to the big monster, and he doesn't really hit the city in a Rampage sense, but he does terrorize in general.

Plus, it's Planet Moon (Armed & Dangerous), so even when it's not great, it's at least kind of funny.

Hulk is definitely BC. And it's great because it was HD (720p) even when it first came out. It holds up really well imo, since they weren't going for uber realistic. My Gamestops usually have used copies for about $10.

Bloodrayne. Bloodrayne Bloodrayne Bloodrayne Bloodrayne Bloodrayne.

OK, it's ugly and silly and stupid and not that good a game. But if you just want to run around hacking people up in a really fun way, it is beyond awesome. You have huge blades, and you can drink their blood, and you have a harpoon thing so you can drag enemies towards you so you can drink their blood faster. Plus the bad guys are nazis. Who doesn't want to hack up nazis in gory fun?

This is my favourite guilty pleasure game. Whenever someone sees that I own it I explain that yes, I know it's not a good game, but oh god it's fun.

It's like watching a bad movie, and enjoying it. The game is so horribly flawed that I'm embarrassed to mention liking it. About the only thing going for it is the premise that you're a vampire (well, half-vampire. See how stupid this is getting already?) and you kill lots of nazis in very bloody ways. As it turns out, that's a good enough premise to make me (temporarily) overlook the flaws and enjoy the hell out of the game.

There must be a horrible movie that you've enjoyed watching recently, right?

War of the Monsters is a brilliant game; it's one of my standbys. It's just not really what I'm looking for at the moment. I looked around for Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, but none of my local used game stores had it in stock. I'll try Gamestop, and then probably the internet.
