Sweet Jesus, we goddamn did it. After our failed invasion of Delve in 2008, we abandoned our assault and headed off to shoot less titan-stacked pastures. Little did we know that 12 short months later we'd be back, only this time the Band of Brothers corporation would be under the <OHGOD> ticker and Fortress Delve would fall in less than a month's time.

On February 4th, 2009 Tamir Lenk of Igneus Auctorita, in his performance of a standard recruitment scam inadvertently stumbled upon a Band of Brothers director who had gotten disillusioned with his alliance. The Mittani was called in who worked with Haargoth Agamar, the disillusioned director, to forcibly disband their entire alliance and allow Darius JOHNSON, our revered alliance CEO to claim the name 'Band of Brothers' as the premiere scamming corporation in the Goonswarm Alliance.

Want to know more about the largest corporate heist in the history of online gaming? Read about it here, and here, and at bbc.co.uk here. (Yes, we got BBC news coverage of this event)

Following the disbanding of Band of Brothers and their reformation as KenZoku alliance, we announced our abandonment of our southern holdings and set our sights on Delve. We purged all KenZoku holdings in 28 days. Delve is goons.
user15986_pic3070_1236653524.gif

We also succeeded in camping KenZoku's entire capital fleet, over 250 cap ships and at least a half dozen titans into the PR-8CA system. . . For 4 weeks solid. That's right. For 4 weeks we maintained 23/7 coverage of PR-8CA and repelled countless attempts by KenZoku, their pets and their on-again-off-again Melrose Place allies, Against ALL Authorities, Stain Empire, C0ven, Systematic Chaos and Minor Threat to break KenZoku's capitals and titans out of the system. It took them exactly one month to bore goons into going to bed, riding bikes or checking out the new Wormhole content until they were able to seize an opportunity to break out. Pee Arr Dash 2/13/09 - 3/13/09 Nevah forget.

Goonswarm Is Delve! Delve is Goons. BoB is no more! Merch Industrial now owns an entire Constellation!
You thought you knew EVE. You had heard the stories and saw the big news articles as they popped up from time to time over the years. You have no idea of the scope of what we've accomplished in the last month. Allow me to (re)introduce you to EVE Online: Apocrypha.

apocryphabanner.jpg

New in Apocrypha: Wormholes, Tech 3 Strategic Cruisers, accelerated training for new players, STAT RECONFIGURATION (start a character with 11 base charisma, drop that to 5 and put those points into Perception or Intelligence for faster training), A MOTHAFUCKING SKILL QUEUE! - Seriously, bitter vets, this is the best time to come back, scroll down for info.

EVE Online is unlike any MMO you have ever played. Let’s just get that out of the way now. You may be the best, most hardcore pwnstar player in (insert other MMO here), but none of that will prepare you for EVE. EVE is harsh on day one, and stays that way, Syncaine writes. "WoW holds your hand from 1-80, and makes sure you get a cookie regardless if you win or lose. EVE not only takes your cookie, but laughs at you for bringing one in the first place."

The game centers on New Eden, Earth’s colonial sister. When the EVE gate that provided a conduit from Earth to New Eden suddenly collapsed, for reasons unknown, the peoples of New Eden were left to fend for themselves. This gave rise to the four major powers with four distinct ideologies and cultures. The central systems of the EVE Galaxy were split up into four sovereign empires with permeable borders and loose trade restrictions. A non-partisan police force patrols the space lanes keeping order and punishing the offenders.

Now, that all sounds very Leave it to Beaver. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The aforementioned empires constitute ‘Empire space,’ which is generally considered by pubbies to be ‘safe’ space. The police force I mentioned earlier can’t be everywhere all the time and while they will respond to acts of piracy or known outlaws entering their space, they can neither be everywhere at once, nor do they act as any sort of investigative or enforcement agency in regards to theft, scamming, embezzlement, libel, slander, insider trading, market manipulation, espionage or sabotage. This contrasts with the outer regions of space which are known as 0.0, Zero Sec or Null Sec space. This space is lawless and can be ‘owned,’ quite literally by player corporations and alliances, but more on that later.

This is the part where I tell you about the history our great and illustrious Penny-Arcade member corporation: Merch Industrial.

c3n.jpg

Merch Industrial, or [MRCHI], began as a small industrialist or production offshoot corporation of the original Penny Arcade corp, The Merch that has evolved over time to encompass many facets of the player experience. We have producers, miners, fleet combat veterans, newbies who don't know what the fuck and elite black ops and capital ship pilots. We are a part of the Goonswarm alliance.

Goonswarm, heralding from the Something Awful forums, is the largest, most intimidating, most infuriating and definately most hated player-run alliance in EVE.

Goonswarm was looking to expand its territorial holdings and looked towards corporations whose membership came from similar online communities that had their own distinctive cultures who may mesh well with the ‘goon mentality’ of Something Awful’s members. [MRCHI], along with Ars Ex Discordia [ARSED] from the Ars Technica forums and other corporations came together under Goonswarm and has proudly caused more tears, drama, ragequits, teeth gnashing, relationship breakups, psychotic episodes and mangina RPer callouts in front of hundreds of fans at the EVE Online Fanfest in Iceland (3:15 in the video) than any other alliance in EVE's history. In Goonswarm it's entirely possible to be on a Titan killmail in your first week.

Since joining Goonswarm, [MRCHI] has proudly represented our corporation in wars alongside Goons every step of the way. From newbie tacklers to combat veterans to industrial backbone mining to frontline ship production to experienced Fleet Commanders, [MRCHI] has become an invaluable part of the swarm. Now, our home is threatened. Our former outpost E-PR0S is being abandoned for greener pastures. We now own the OK-FEM Constellation in Delve, with the station in C3N-3S (C3New Hoshoun) being our home. We are in the process of building and deploying two more outposts to create a sovereignty capital in the constellation.

What we are looking for now is an infusion of fresh blood. We need newbies to aid in our common defense, mine for our industrial backbone and join our chorus of ‘fofofo’ as we secure our new holdings in Delve and lock down KenZoku's capitals until they ragequit in disgust. Newbies need not be from the US/Canada either. We are in need of 23/7 timezone coverage, so Euros and Anzacs are encouraged to join. Goonswarm has a huge Euro and Anzac presence, although it is not as good as our US timezone coverage, obviously. (protip: US TZ members are the 3/5ths members, it's the Anzacs and the Euros who count most.)

Newbees, this section is for you.

We have some very simple requirements to join Merch Industrial. You must have a Penny Arcade account for more than 90 days and have contributed to the community. There. That's it. Oh, and it's completely subjective, so if you've got a 4 year old account and you've never posted, or a 91 day old account with 3 posts, all in EVE related threads, I wouldn't bet the farm on getting in.

This isn't rampant elitism, we want to play with people who share the common culture found on these boards. We also want to weed out the spies who don't get into Goonfleet and think that Merch is a free pass into the swarm. The spying metagame can be extremely devastating to an alliance, so anything you can do to mitigate spies is a good thing.

How to join Merch Industrial:

a. Create a trial account by going to http://www.eve-online.com and registering a new account
- OR –
b. Post in this thread/find a friend with Steam/Access Steam for a free 21 day trial.
- OR -
c. If you know someone who plays already, ask them to refer you using their EvE account and you get an extended trial, and that person gets 30 days free if you subscribe.
- OR -
d. Reactivate your old account

1. Go to http://wiki.goonfleet.com and check out the publicly viewable pages about character creation.

2. Create a character. Using the goonfleet wiki is recommended as it provides the ‘best builds’ for
particular races and professions, however, don’t sweat it if you want to go your own way with character creation. Nothing done during character creation can’t be ‘fixed’ other than your racial starting stats (which won’t be a huge deal)

3. DO THE TUTORIAL. I repeat. DO THE TUTORIAL. The tutorial is about an hour or so long and it covers the most basic of functionality in the game. If you’re the type with adolescent or adult ADHD that never reads the manuals and always skips cutscenes in favor of the ‘I’ll figure it out’ mentality, take a Xanax then, OHGOD DO THE TUTORIAL, it was revamped in Apocrypha and it's really informative, it also provides you with skillbooks that you'll use towards your career path and several million isk worth of loot and rewards. It's totally worth it. Trust me on this one.

4. When you’ve completed the tutorial, go to one of the following stations and click on the Offices tab.

Find Merch Industrial and hit ‘apply.’ Give your Penny-Arcade forums name in your application.

The offices are located in:
Atai II - Moon 15 - Genolution Biotech Productions
Bittanshal VII - Moon 9 - CreoDron Factory
Gelfiven IX - Moon 15 - Vherokior tribe Bureau
Ipref IV - Moon 5 - CONCORD Bureau
Ishisomo VIII - Propel Dynamics Factory
Nourvukaiken VII - Moon 4 - Caldari Constructions Production Plant
Oursulaert VI - Chemal Tech Research Center
Warouh VI - Moon 18 - Inherent Implants Biotech Production

(If you have not received a reply or been accepted into the corporation after 48 hours, send a brief in-game EVEMail to Angelus Damelon, Merch Industrial’s recruitment director. Be brief, concise and polite, this man holds the only card that’ll let you in. He's lazy and a big gay and we all hate him and he's got a real life, so sometimes he doesn’t log in at the precise moment that is most convenient to our applicants, but he will process your application.)

5. Once accepted you will see two new tabs in your mailbox, one for Corp mail and one for Alliance mail. These will have email in them with important information, most of which you may not understand at this point. Don’t delete them. DO NOT REPLY TO ANY CORP OR ALLIANCE MAIL. A reply to any corp-wide or alliance-wide mail is sent to every person in the respective organization. In fact, don’t send any mail for the first couple weeks; just ask for help in corp chat. Get your ass to C3New Hoshoun.

6. Go to http://forums.merchindustrial.org and register for an account there under your EVE pilot’s name. Don’t use your PA forums name (if different from your EVE pilot). Post to introduce yourself, remark on how awesome the forums are now, visit off-topic for some truly horrible posting (please keep coming back) and vote Courthouse ’09.

7. Spy clause: You will be called a spy. You are a spy. We know you’re a spy and it’s only a matter of time until we catch you in your spying ways. EVE has an amazing metagame (I mentioned earlier the thievery, scamming, espionage, disbanding of BoB, etc.) This can occur out of the game client as well. On forums, through MSN/Yahoo/ICQ messengers, other game sites, etc. All intel can be valuable intel to the right people. Hopefully this is one of the things that drew you to the game in the first place, that being said, have a thick skin, spybabby, because this isn’t your grand mama’s ‘omg they totally stoled our illidan strat’ kind of spying, spy.

8. Use corp chat. Use it often. Use it well. We’re all internet veterans here. We’ve all played these kinds of games before. We expect that you will have questions and we will be more than happy to answer them. Use corp chat for these questions, you may be redirected to our help channel if corp chat is busy, but never feel like you can’t ask about how to do something, what something means, for a partner to mine or ‘rat’ with, or for straight out cash if you need it.

9. Don't call it a guild, Don't call your character a toon, and no it's not like WoW at all and most of the players in EvE are either WoW refugees/post-addicts or never played it all and never want to hear about it. Any or all of the above will get you shot by Courthouse, (he'll do it too).

10. Finally, a warning (This coincides with the spy clause): If you don't have a thick skin, don't come out. You will be mocked, you will be called a spy, you will read words you never though you'd see in chat windows, you will see every racial and ethnic slur used hourly and it will offend all of your PC sensibilities, when you die and lose all your stuff you will be laughed at. Life is hard, and so is EVE. You've been warned.

Why Play EVE?

Well, that's a fantastic question. Have you ever been sitting back grinding through your 350th Alterac Valley for those amazing honor points and thought to yourself, "Christ, why am I doing this? PVP doesn't even mean anything in this game!" Yeah, us too. So we went to a game where it does. Sure, Dark Age of Camelot and Age of Conan both had some fantastic RoR in them, but this is different. In EVE, sovereignty counts for more than raid bonuses, sovereignty is literal ownership of the systems and constellations. PVP can change the face of the map, as seen in the animated GIF above.

If you want to take part in meaningful PVP, or become one of thousands of producers that manufacture items, fittings, ships or even stations for players to use (because only a handful of the most basic parts are seeded by NPCs), or play with friends and allies that are truly global against old cold war adversaries and new haughty european elitists then this is the game for you.

--Bitter vets: DELVE IS GOONS!--
WEEOOOWEEEOOOWEEEOOOWEEEOOO

Current Sovereignty Map

Attention Bitter Veterans of Merch Industrial, the time of your return is now. We took Delve, Delve is goons.

The last four months have been hilarious and amazing for Goonswarm. We got attacked by Nync and his pack of russian ebayers, betrayed by Evil Thug, watched as Suas went :fuckgoons:, had a director level spy in Goonfleet fail to break us, got a director level spy from BoB and broke them, invaded Delve, abandoned the south, Killed Molle's titan #4, won in Delve, camped Kenny's capitals in an NPC station for 30 days, and acquired the entire OK-FEM constellation in Southern Delve for Merch Industrial.

Oh, and we kicked out Rhonyn from Merch and Trevor Reznick from the Swarm.

If that's not enough to get you to come back, nothing is.

Eve players, feel free to poast screenshots.

This is why PA can't have nice threads. If this can be moved back to G&T like I originally put it, then I would be appreciated.

Be the cool guy who comes into the game and rocks our world with your mad Titan piloting skillz.

Or be like me and broadcast musics and entertaining crap from the heart of Merchi's home in Delve.

So say that I used to be in IAC. Apparently IAC doesn't exist anymore, (:() and all the old IAC space is AAA's. Does anyone know AAA's attitude toward the old IAC members since they were apparently backstabbed? I know that some of the combat focused old corps left IAC for AAA, so there's possibly a link still there.

I've probably got at least 400 million in ships and items strewn about catch, and I would rather not have to firesale them (if I even have the remote-sell skill trained). I'm pretty certain I was in my arazu, maybe logged off in space when I let my sub expire, so I'd probably not have much trouble getting myself out if it's hostile.

Quick question: skimming through a previous thread, someone mentioned that you should avoid just orbiting around a target in combat. Could someone elaborate on how you maneuver in combat? Did the game have any keyboard controls for directly piloting that I missed?

It's basically clicking stuff in space to move/warp to, with shortcuts on the keyboard for everything else.

Yea, you're pretty much screwed. AAA hates everyone except bob and pets. Which is fine, but they pretty much suck at this game as goons are proving this over and over. Fireselling is the way to go. You're welcome to app to merchi pending no hostile corp history, ect ect. (IAC isn't considered hostile afaik).

I don't know the specifics of wormholes, although I'm sure I can't use one. I was just curious.

You don't NEED to pod, however it's much faster and easier. And there is no guarantee you'll make it down alive in any case due to many gatecamps, etc.

Wormholes actually function just like the stargates. The difficulty comes in finding them, then finding one where you want to go (if you're using it for a shortcut).

I heartily recommend you go ahead and apply now, then pod jump down when you're accepted. You'll get plenty of free isk and low cost ships when you arrive. Until you can fly the basic tackling frigate, you might try to learn your way around and the basics of how to move around in 0.0.

Since they don't seem to matter anymore (I never got to see any stats anywhere), I was thinking maybe a different race just for looks' sake.

It's not really that important. You don't look at your own characters face that much I'd imagine.

Just delete the character if you are only around 14days in. Otherwise continue to play and if you really can't stand it they do have like a $20 fee and/or word is when the Station Walking Around Thingy patch comes out everyone gets a free "respec" on their look
