Win XP service pack 3 and gameranger problem

After I dl SP3, my Star Trek Armada game will no longer work on gameranger. Anyone know anything about this?
Note my firewall allows those programs through for multiplayer so that isn't the problem.
I also tried to uninstall SP3 from the pc and will now not boot up. My IT guy will take care of that but I would like to know what went wrong. I went to the ctrl pannel-->add/remove programs --> and uninstalled it.
Suggestions? (more focused on the first question)
