UTI. Can't sleep. Doctors office isn't open. *update*

This is disgusting, but I'm at the end of my rope here, and it's only been a couple of hours. I woke up at like 3am to use the bathroom, and noticed there was blood in my pee. And that it hurt SO FUCKING BAD to go. I've never had a UTI before, but I know what the symptoms are (my mother used to get them regularly). My doctors office isn't open yet, and I really need to get some sleep, but I can't because I constantly have to pee.

The stores aren't open yet either, so cranberry juice is out of the question until later this morning. Are there any other remedies to help me sleep?

Also, I have a tae kwon do class this evening.... is it a bad idea to go to that? Or would that just aggravate everything?

Are there any urgent care clinics in your area? You know, the not quite an emergency room style clinics? I've used one when I had a gout attack and couldn't wait until the doctors office opened.

Your options are pretty limited. If you do not want to go to urgent care/ ER then pop a couple of co-codamol (or whatever painkillers you have) and if you had some old but in-date anti biotics it would be worth considering.

Then it just becomes a challenge to get what little sleep you'll manage. But I fear it is going to be a shitty shitty night for you.

Cranberry really won't do shit at this stage, its mainly a preventative/general health thing. Go to the ER.

Are you sure this is actually a UTI though? They shouldn't come on that fast.

I'm not 100%. But there was bleeding, constant need to pee, burning when peeing, and not that much coming out (sorry for the nastiness of this post)

and upon researching UTIs what I have sounds exactly like one. I don't know what else it could be. Though, the symptoms seem to be lessening as the morning progresses.

Yeah that's kind of odd. It could be a stone. In which case, go to the ER. Bladder stones can do the same thing, and can come on a lot faster.

Don't be embarrassed, its just a thing. But yeah, there's generally a buildup to those kind of symptoms. Needless to day, for either case you need an ER - stones can cause physical damage as well as pain, and UTIs can migrate to the kidneys, which makes them much more damaging and difficult to get rid of.

Well, the buildup could have been during the evening, I suppose. I just really noticed it when I had to wake up to pee. I duno. Either way, i'll be going to the doctor. They open later today, and I feel I can wait a couple hours until then.

UTI's usually start with "hmm that burns". Not just, blood.

Blood in your urine is bad. This is a doctor situation.

There is ONE reason you might have blood in your urine that is not a cause to go to the doctor. I say this because it happened to me a year ago: exercise-induced hematuria.

Did you do any very intense exercise today? Especially high impact, strenuous exercise?

This happens to some athletes often. When engaging in heavy exercise, especially if you haven't in a while, you can "shake" your bladder to the point where it bumps against the anterior walls of the muscles surrounding it and bruises. It then releases blood or a fluid with blood in it into your urine.

This happened to me last May. I was back home for about a week from university (and you can tell how much exercise I got there...) and I had gone to the gym a few times. The third or forth time I went to the gym, I really pushed myself on the treadmill. I was doing a 20 minute run, fast, and about 10 minutes in I felt like I had to pee. I staved off the feeling but a few minutes later the urge was bad enough I had to stop and take care of it. Almost died of shock at the urinal when I started pissing blood. Drove straight home and chugged cranberry juice.

I'm just grasping at straws here, but if you weren't aware of that there's a good chance that's what it could be.

If a bruised bladder hematuria is indeed the case, then it's just a matter of sticking it out. It goes away after a few hours. You wouldn't have to see a doctor. Of course if it lasts longer than that or you don't know what it is you should see one anyway.

Alright, I saw my doctor today, and she said it's most definitely a UTI, but she was really shocked that the blood in the urine showed up so early which lead her to believe that if I waited any longer (i just got it TODAY), I would have had kidney damage. D:

Soo, that freaked me out a tad, and next time something like that happens, I think I'm going to go to the ER.

Thanks for all the help guys. As for my other question (since I forgot to ask my doctor..)... would it or would it not be wise for me to go to Martial Arts class this evening? I'm guessing not? but I would like other opinions.

    Risk vs reward.

Since the risk is damage and reward is minimal. Skip the class.

Not enough lime for this. You should be resting as much as possible.

My wife had a uti that ended up moving to her kidney while we were in college. She waited too long because we didn't have any money/insurance while we were in school and it was one of the most painful experiences of her life. Things can get really really bad when it moves to the kidney, as in, you-will-probably-die-without-modern-medicine bad. Not to mention, pain of the good-lord-let-me-pass-out variety.

Have I scared you? Go to the doctor.

Liming something indicates the person agrees with that statement.

There's the saying "limed for truth" on the forums. I believe it originated in SE++, migrated to the other forums, and now it's mocked and derided by a good number of forumers, used by another good number, and the whole mini 'controversy' is the cause of eye rolling by everyone else.

    Similarly, "salmon'd for lies", etc.

Anyway, on topic, I do second the choice to skip class. Get some rest, your teacher will understand. Catching up on one missed class will be less effort than possibly extending your recovery time because you pushed yourself too hard.

Get in bed, follow your doctors orders (drink fluids?) and take it easy.

In my experience having a UTI doesn't mean you can't do exercise but it can definitely make it so that you don't want to.

Not only that, you're going to want to stay as hydrated as possible while you're trying to flush the infection out. If you go to work out you may be shunting some of that liquid away with sweat rather than putting it through where it needs to go. If you really need to go or really are dying to go to this class then go ahead, but otherwise I'd say just stay at home and try to distract yourself from how crappy you feel.

Also, not all doctors will give you it but if it's really bugging you some doctors will give you a pill that anesthetizes your urinary tract. It makes life a lot better the first day or two when you're waiting for the antibiotics to kick in.

You'd have to be crazy to go to a martial arts class the same day as being so ill. Take it easy or you might hurt yourself. What if you get hit in the area you got the infection? Ouch.
