I still think it's a shame they never made a Golf game that utilized the exact same controls and setup as Wii Sports. Honestly, I wish there was an arcadey golf game that directly copied Wii Sports golf controls and general setup (but with a lot more courses and options of course).
Oh well. Hopefully someone comes around and makes a good arcadey one with M+. I'll be getting Tiger Woods with the M+ to scratch my "golf sim" needs but I"d still like a SuperSwing or We Love Golf that uses it well...
We just got in Wii MotionPlus today along with Tiger Woods and Grand Slam Tennis, and after many hours of playing (and trying to do work amidst even more playing) it's obvious that WM+ is as big as everyone expects it will be.
The bar is being raised on the contol front. This is the first time I've truly felt like motion has been done better than in Wii Sports Bowling, and frankly I don't want a single other Wii title that uses motion without it. Hopefully the "waggle" days are over... at least for the games that matter.
Anthony (our video guy, and HUGE tennis player... plays against some pretty famous peeps) said it was "The best tennis videogame I've ever played." and I'm starting to agree. It kicks so much ass...

Simply mentioning Bushido Blade in the interview has put this on my radar. I hope they reconsider making the controls more M+ reliant if possible, but as it was described sounds good enough already.
In case anyone was worried, Kotaku confirmed that the Motion Plus can be
a) removed from its plastic glove, and
b) has a nunchuck passthrough port
Incidentally, Kotaku was also the first website to make the ludicrous claim that the Motion Plus would be "locked in its latex prison! zomg can't take it out of teh wiimote glove confirmed!" based on some floor display demos.
The reasonable ones among us knew that, yes, it was shipping in these gloves, but it would be able to be removed. And that's how it is.
So.. is there anything that actually uses the M+ that'll be out when it comes out? Or is there going to be a week where its being sold but not able to be used?
I believe the "launch" games are Tiger Woods, Virtua Tennis, and Grand Slam Tennis. Tiger gets a M+ bundle for $60; wonder if Nintendo will continue to let them do that after Resort comes out.
Hopefully this really makes motion controls great. Most of the best Wii games make use of IR instead of motion.
That's what news sites are saying, that EA's offering is better. I'd wait for the final verdict, though.
What's more interesting is these news sites are reporting "not true 1:1" in some games. Whether its the devs fault or because of M+ remains to be seen.
I was not caring about Wii Sports Resort at all, but it's sounding more and more like it's the closest we will get to Pilotwings and Waverace on the Wii, with a bunch more stuff that actually sounds fun.
Would be nice to have it update the Miis to be a little more detailed, but it probably won't happen ever.

I think they take advantage of M+'s capabilities but they aren't as refined and dynamic as what is offered Wii Sports Resort.

According to EA, it's a design decision, because, if you were actually playing a virtual professional Tennis player, you would probably suck terribly if your true 1:1 motions were exactly mapped to your virtual character. I mean really. I can't play real tennis worth shit. If they did true 1:1 I'd be hitting tennis balls all the fuck everywhere. What they did with Grand Slam was make a good balance between realism and video game fun. You have far more control but you dont' have to be an actual pro tennis player to play. And if you do play tennis, apparently, it feels pretty natural or pretty good to play with M+.
Seriously if they had chosen to map true 1:1 to Grand Slam or Tiger Woods, it would be absolutely no fun at all. I've tried playing tennis. I can't hit the ball worth fucking shit. It goes crazy everywhere.
What I want from a videogame is to be able to control the ball, drop shots, strong shots, lobs, put spin on it, etcetera. I can't do that shit in real life! Why would I want true 1:1 in the game?
No, what I want is solid motion control that accurately reads my motions, and that the motions are meaningfully mapped to different moves in the game. Making a somewhat downward swing results in a drop shot, or swinging horizontally with the remote held at the right angle puts on top spin, or turning the remote a certain way to put on side spin for curved shots. Realistic motions. But I don't want full 1:1 because I can't actually do those they way they would be in real life..
Anyway I just want Tiger Woods 09 personally. That's what I'm lookin forward to.
So, has anyone picked this up yet with Tiger Woods or Grand Slam Tennis? How does it handle?
+1. More specifically, I want ot know about putting in TW10. I loved 09, except pitching and putting were so bad that it ruined the entire game. Traded it away for RE5 shortly after purchase.
Apparently Grand Slam Tennis is awful according to some reviews I've read (Eurogamer was one I can remember off the top of my head, 5/10), haven't seen anything on Tiger 10 yet. I'm waiting on Tiger to show up and then gonna go grab a Motion Plus somewhere (knowing Nintendo though it'll be impossible to find anywhere for months sold as a stand-alone unit).
Online, offline multi, a ton of control schemes and content. They do talk up the learning curve though, so perhaps other sites didn't put in enough time (or perhaps it really is poorly designed).
As decent as it sounds I'm waiting for Tiger Woods. Wii Sports Resort has a table tennis of its own anyway.
Well I'll have it sometime tonight regardless, hadn't seen the IGN review yet so that relieves some of my doubts a bit. Now to find a Motion Plus for sale...
The other thing I forgot to mention is, Tiger Woods sounds like the perfect game for MotionPlus, along with other sports like baseball: short bursts of motion which make calibration no problem, unlike a tennis game that needs to be spot on over a longer time span.
I've purchased all three games. Tiger Woods, Grand Slam and Virtua Tennis, and I've tried them with the M+. My verdict so far:
M+: It works. It really works fine. Easily removed from the condom, it can be locked into your Wiimote and isn't intrusive or really uncomfortable.
Tiger Woods: Awesome! It's a fine game, which obviously doesn't have all the eye-candy of its HD counterparts, but the controls with M+ are just fantastic. Intuitive enough that a non-gamer can pick it up and enjoy it (so it could be a success at family parties). We've set all the controls to the most "advanced" and "realistic" possible, and in three holes both my friend and I were at 1 over Par only. The putting was the most impressive use of M+ I've seen. Someone NEEDS to make a miniputt game with M+.
Grand Slam: MEH. It's rough. While the controls themselves are okay, the graphics and animations are just plain terrible. The audience is a cardboard cutout that doesn't even move in the slightest, and the music is AWFUL. Worst, the framerate is super choppy WHILE playing. It's hard to follow the ball around, which ruins it for me (and this is too bad, because as I've said, it controls fine).
Virtua Tennis 2009: Now THIS is the real deal as far as Tennis goes. This one plays smoothly and looks (and sounds) way better than Grand Slam. However, my friend said he had trouble with depth perception of the ball because it doesn't always cast a shadow. I don't know, because of the yellow tray it leaves behind (like all Virtua Tennis games) I was able to follow it fine. Only one time have I made a mistake in calculating its position. That and he is a lefty, so he had a hard time moving the character with the nunhuck (but you can play without a nunchuck). So, he hated it, but I LOVED it. You might want to rent it first and see for yourself, but honestly, I think it is good.
I have played very little so far, this is only my first impressions.
Basically, get Tiger Woods 10 and Virtua Tennis and skip Grand Slam.
If you got specific questions, ask them and I'll try my best to answer.
The only downer is that there is still no WiiSpeak support for online chatting, which is long overdue. If you're reading EA, I'm going to start docking points if you ignore it again in next year's version.
Thanks for your impressions. It is interesting that you had so negative experience with Grand Slam Tennis. From what I seen at GAF, it is more realistic game of the two, and has far higher learning curve. Most people with real tennis experience seem to love it.

Desired feature or no, what a little bitch.
We're going OT, but I'm really getting tired of Matt Cassamassass. He seems to think the industry needs to bend to his whims, and his constant instistance to gamers that he knows about secret projects that he can't tell anyone about - which can only have the point of telling us gamers how awesome he is.
..anyway, M+! With Tiger Woods, is disc golf available from the start?
I want to know how in-depth the character customization is, and if there are any courses that are not based on real world locations. Not much hope for it, but y'know.
while playing videogame golf with motion plus totally intrigues me...i would totally be buying the game for the disc golf. Has anyone tried it? I've seen the videos, but really just how true to form is it? Can you play the wind?
i wish there were impressions of the disc golf from sports resort

Both are mentioned in the IGN review of TW 2010. He says the included disc golf could totally be sold as its own game. You can play it on any of the 27 golf courses. However Wii Sports Resort's disc throwing feels more solid and fun, more floaty as discs should feel.

Thanks for the impressions, I've been particularly interested in how Virtua Tennis turned out, and how it compares against Grand Slam. I am a long time fan of Virtua Tennis (always preferred it over Top Spin), so if they are similar in their use of M+, I'll probably go with Virtua Tennis. I am a very casual tennis player, so I would be interested if you have any thoughts if one or the other better matches tennis moves. I've noticed that there has been a lot more hype/early coverage of Grand Slam, so it has been hard to find much in the way of impressions of Virtua Tennis.
I take it from your comments you have played past versions of VT, correct? Outside of motion controls, is the gameplay pretty much the same? For example, career mode where you choose and activity each week, raise stats, get new gear?
Does it still have create-your-player?
So far I am having SERIOUS issues with the MotionPlus controls of Grand Slam Tennis, to the point where I've:
1. Exchanged my MotionPlus, assuming something was wrong with it.
2. Picked up Virtual Tennis out of sheer curiosity as to what was going on.
I've rewatched this video maybe a dozen times and I simply can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, but I definitely can't seem to match the level of 1-to-1 shown off here:
How often do you "re-calibrate" the MotionPlus? Do you center yourself after every shot? Every game? Between serves? I've tried centering myself after every shot in practice mode, and it seems to work maybe 50% of the time, but often times I can be standing DEAD CENTER, *pointing the Wiimote at the TV/senor bar* - and my player continues to stand in the back-handed stance. What? Why? What am I doing that would convince the game or controller that I want to be in that position?
Based on the incredibly different experiences I'm hearing from people , I can't help but wonder if there's a substantial bug in the hardware/software that isn't showing up for some people and is showing up for others. It has nothing to do with "skill" or a "learning curve" - the game simply isn't behaving how it was advertised to, or how one would expect it to.
I can't really tell if the controls for Virtual Tennis are substantially better. It's certainly less ambitious, but it also seems to play a bit better. Either way, I'm definitely not feeling the HOLY CRAP difference of MotionPlus like I expected to. I'm hoping when Tiger Woods gets here from GameFly, I will at least be able to tell if my hardware is working correctly. Leave it to Nintendo to charge $20 for an add-on to an existing controller without even providing SOME sort of calibration test software.

Sounds like a fantastic first try though overall and probably a great start to a series that will just get refined more and more over the years.
Until Natal and Sony's motion controller come out and we can play the same game with good graphics :P
Well in the two years it takes you'll be able to do the same thing on a Nintendo console.
This shot just reminds me of Balrog from Cave Story.
