Here's concrete proof that I was once terrible. These are from middle school (when I was probably 11-12.
    middleschool1.jpg
I was always more of a video game nerd than an Anime nerd, but I did write l33t and read megatokyo. This comics starts as Operation: No more books (apparently where I do my best to destroy math text books) and my good conscious is teaching me a lesson for burning down a publishing company. She does this of course by putting me in viiirrrtuall reeeality. Here I encounter link.
    middleschool2.jpg
    middleschool3.jpg
and here is what I did instead of engaging in gym class:
    middleschool4.jpg

I can never deny that I am a nerd. My "bad" conscious, by the way, was an emo kid with piercings and I drew him alot with hearts all around him, yeaaaah. Its embarrassing, but I think its funny to see where I grew up and where I didn't, personality wise. I still think emo kids are cute and dragons are cool. Fuck growing up, apparently. And bless my sister for not making fun of me endlessly, as she should of. I wish they were weirder, instead of generic DA worthy crap, though.

This proves that at one time, we were at the same skill level, which means that I can get as good as you (in my own little way) someday!
When I've hit a milestone in my stuff worth celebrating, I'll dig up some of my super old stuff and join in the relishing not being terrible anymore.

There's really no mystery too it, I've been scrawling drawings on shit ever since I remember. You see a noticeable shift in my drawing when I got an art teacher who decided I should be trying to draw stuff I see in real life and not just the comics and cartoons I consumed. Its such a gradual progression, Its almost painful how much it reinforces the need for practice. This is why I always kept my old art around.

Personally, I've never been ashamed of what I used to draw a long time ago. Yeah, I was that self isolating anime/game nerd who had a few friends and drew stupid comics, and I'm happy I didn't stop. Just sorta powered through and did what I had to do to keep drawing.

That's an awesome way of putting it.
I know there's no mystery behind it, I was just being silly about that.
I was also that kinda kid, but I think the difference between us is that, while I've always doodled, I never really got to the "powering through" stage until not all that long ago (re: about six months).
I don't regret it, it just means I have a lot of catching up to do in terms of serious practice.
Seeing your old stuff, and the stuff of others just affirms what I can accomplish if I commit to it once more.
Real inspiring-like, Iruka! I look forward to the stuff you'll do this year.

My only concern would be the rate at which those types of inks/decals/whathaveyou decay over time,. Especially after a number of washing/drying cycles. Kinda like iron-ons, or glow in the dark shit.

What is the back story on the skull and raven (crow?)?

Also, I like the design, but I'm not sure which of the two I want to look at more. They kind of draw away from each other a little too much, Like two independent designs that were just put together on one canvas.

Of course, this is all based on I don't know what they are from or what they represent. It could be spot on and I'm just not catching onto the reference.

Its a cat skull. Most of my bird work in general is supposed to sort of have a vibe of decay and the separation of soul and body. This is more vague, just some Death, I wanted to try and work the motif into tee. DBH is such that the tee doesn't have to be a direct narrative/joke.

I can see what you're saying about the focus, I was hoping for a sort of downwards flow. All the focal points are sort of left oriented maybe I can fix that. Flipping the bird may even help.

    edited January 2010
Yeah, now that you mention it I can kind of read the downward flow you were going for, I think that the skull just kind of threw it off for me at first, because the bird is such a smooth and flowing form where as a skull is just a single static shape, so I didn't think to look for the flow in the S curve that I can now follow if I go from the skull to the feathers to the bird.

Those feathers look much better methinks.

My only suggestion would be that now the skiull looks very sketchy by comparison. You might want to consider adding more solid white sections into the skull to make them not feel so different.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I like the sketchy feeling though, I was thinking I could maybe transition the last of the tail feathers into a less solid state, maybe that'll help it have some visual progresstion from one to the other.

Mmm, I know this isn't an art related post for you, but I remember back a while in the chat thread that you asked for some music recommendations, if I remember correctly, that were like Daft Punk and Justice and all the other popular Dance/Techno/Trance groups out there right now.

If you're still interested, check out this DJ, Aaron Simpson. He doesn't do anything but spin his own set lists, which he makes available for download and he includes a track list so it is amazingly helpful as a resource for some good music.

Just a sample of one of the songs I found that I like, by listening to his mix releases.

If you're interested, he has a myspace page and it has his direct downloads here:

His sets are a bit heavy on the DnB, but it is pretty good still, unless you have a hate for DnB music. I recommend starting with his July 2006 mix if you want to DL any of them.

If I have mis-remembered who was asking for this music, I apologize, and will take down this post and replace it with something less out of left field.

Yeah, thats kinda why I'm doing this. It seems like alot of people discover brush settings and forget about them, and the animation kids tend to not use photoshop as intensively as the illustration students, and then get sort of behind about optimizing the program.
