Good PC Multiplayer games?

I'm trying to find a game to play with a friend of mine. We currently play Warhammer Online together, but starting to get burned out on it since it's all we play.

Can people suggest some games that still have activity and have good coop action in them?

There's a pretty active Diablo 2 community here at Penny Arcade. But that's just trading one addiction for another. There's also a very active Left 4 Dead (just wait until the new Survival mode patch comes out!) and TF2 community.

Are you just looking for PC games? Or are there consoles that you both own?

EDIT: http://co-optimus.com/ is all you need for all of your co-op needs, regardless.

well, currently the PC is the only gaming machine we both have. Preferably looking for a game we can play together AGAINST other people.

left 4 dead (l4d) is pretty much the best co-op experiance around. You need every person in your team and they need you. It's really a great experience and you can place vs too.

Though, if you're going to play vs, you might want to try to find another two friends since dealing with vs pubs can be hair-ripping-out-bad.

Not all the time, but often enough.

Not much selection I am afraid.
    It's either

    1) MMOs (WoW, War)
    2) FPS (L4D)
    3) RTS (DoW2 or Demigod)

    TF2.

It comes in The Orange Box with four other games, it's relatively cheap, PA has an active community and Valve are always adding new shit to the PC version.

The Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 campaign can be played in coop, well it was practically tailored to it. Awesomely fun to play trough as well. Too bad they then decided to make the DLC singleplayer only though.

The co-op mods for HL and HL2 are good stuff. Sven Co-op and something else.

Edit: Synergy is the other one.

I know this is not what you're looking for, but I just found this today and it's great. Smokin' Guns - a western game using the quake 3 engine. It's fun and free!

You can play Dawn of War 2 in team mod, 2v2, same thing with Warcraft 3 and most other RTSs.

I'll add in my personal favourite SWAT 4. Playable co-op through the campaign missions (and you can also modify and easily make your own custom missions) for between 2-5 players.

It's a really awesome game, and not like your standard FPS at all. The emphasis is on being slow and methodical. You need to work together with your team mates because a single person going Rambo can easily get the entire squad killed.

In terms of gameplay it's a tactical FPS, with a heavy emphasis on the fact that it's a police sim. That means you are not allowed to use lethal force on sight, even if they've got a gun, or even if the suspect's fleeing. You are only allowed to fire in the defence of life (which means they have to have previously shot their weapon, or have to be pointing it at someone). Wherever possible you also have to shout compliance first in order to give them the opportunity to surrender.

This ends up making the game much more tense, and every room is a potential deathtrap since you can never really predict what's going to happen, and the suspects and civilians can be pretty unpredictable at times. You need to take your time and follow procedure where you can. The best thing I can say about this game is that I played it through on hard difficulty, and died loads of times, probably dozens on some missions. BUT, every time it happened, I knew it was always because I had tried to rush things, cut some corner, not do things properly. It's one of the few games where I died so frequently and yet that didn't feel cheap or frustrating because I knew I was the one that screwed up.

EDIT: Oh, and I also want to add in Shotgun Sunrise, which is a mod in progress by a bunch of people from the forums. It's a zombie western mod, and it's really good fun for messing about in. You can find the thread here:

Well, If you're willing to endure the most obnoxious and depraved elements of humanity to be found on the internet, then Defense of the Ancients (DOTA) is a great mod/map for Warcraft 3. The learning curve is a steep one, but once you're comfortable with most of the heroes, its a really deep game with lots of strategy and skill involved. I played it with one of my friends for years; it really is much better with even just 1 other person you actually know, as 2 people working together with ventrillo can pretty much guarantee a win in public games if they're good. (Also Dota is free if you have WC3 and Frozen Throne)

I also feel like I should echo the suggestions for Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead, valve's teamplay games are the best I've ever played.

I've got a quick question about Burnout Paradisio. I wanted to pick it up for 360, so I can either get the used regular version or the new "Complete Box" for a little more.

It's my understanding that the complete box just comes with some DLC but I seem to remember reading that the included DLC was actually free to download, so I could just buy the original version used and save some scratch? Can anyone clarify for me?

Orange box. You get TF2, you're almost guaranteed to be able to get HL2: DM for free because of some special graphics-card related deal, and from that set of games you have access to the wide world of HL2 source engine mods.
