Pandora: Internet Radio!

Recently I decided to actually use Pandora. I become easily bored with my music collection and seek something new, so this website seemed like a perfect fit for me.

And also I can stop bugging people for musical suggestions.

Now, a cool feature of Pandora is letting other people listen to your stations, and I know people on here have really fantastic taste in music. (Vorus, Koshian, Knob, and Centipede Damascus come to mind.)

I have three radio stations right now, but I really only listen to the acoustic indie one lately, because it helps me to write stuff.

There's probably at least a couple people on here that use Pandora, and I wanna know what you listen to SE++, I want to tune in to your radio stations.

Nope, it just plays music for you in a radio station type thing

You only influence what music it gives you, you don't have absolute control of what you hear.

I'll start using this because it seems cool

I only use Last.fm to chart what I'm listening to but I'll use this to chart what I should be listening to more

    Hmm

So I put in "No Soul" by Say Anything and it spit out this song "Childhood's End" by Marillion.

And I totally fucking dig it.

So yeah, very good first impression and I can definitely see myself using this regularly.

It's a flash app that runs in it's own browser window but it does have click-to-buy links for iTunes and AmazonMP3 which is way better by the way.

Yeah Pandora was cool until they were forced to stop broadbasting to anyone outside of the US.

Then I had to make up a ZIP code to verify that I was infact in the US. Turns out my ZIP Code was for somewhere in NY.

Then they introduced IP tracking, so now I can't listen at all.

A friend of mine watched Gabe while he was streaming himself doing a comic once. Said he didn't care for what he listened to.

Also, none of you know who I am but fuck it. my taste goes all over the place, but the Atmosphere, De La Soul, and Incubus channels have had a lot of time getting nitpicked into exactly what I wanted from them and nothing more.

I suppose it's worth noting that they also have mobile apps for both typical cell phones and the iPhone, I assume the iPod Touch as well.

I like last.fm better because even if you don't take advantage of the scrobbling and auto-suggestions, you can still look up bands you like and either play their "radio" (pretty much the same thing that pandora does) or click on "similar artists" and explore that way.

It often can be (they have sales on full albums a lot) but I like it because it uses way less overhead and they give you an MP3 file you can do whatever you wish with.

Yeah I use last.fm too, but I only really started scrobbling properly recently, so my music page is a little unbalanced (Beirut has like 2300 listens harhar).

Actually I'm somewhat mistaken. Technically, Pandora is supposed to evaluate the actual sonic qualities of any particular song (which means someone had to listen to it and input the parameters), and then look for other songs with the same sonic qualities. But that introduces a definite margin of error, since there is a human being behind those parameters and because ever song has to be done by hand. Last.fm measures solely by how popular any two given bands are with a given subset of people, and it it finds a high correlation, then it marks them as similar. I think this system is better because this kind of groupthink tends to be pretty accurate, and it also allows for less prominent bands that pandora might not even know about, to show up on this correlation matrix.

Well atleast iTunes store has decided to not use their DRM bullshit anymore. Plus it's pretty easy to buy stuff once you have an account set up. A little too easy actually...

Plus it also means you'll actually find really obscure music on last.fm, such as classical, whereas last time I checked Pandora (this might have changed by now), they hadn't even started cataloguing classical due to it's massive complexity etc etc.

Pandora also chokes on foreign music, which is fantastically represented on last.fm. It's nice having all my japanese and russian stuff show up properly.
