This will be a pretty shitty OP if anyone wants to discuss this game, but there wasn't an old thread to resurrect. THE TITANS is in caps because they are that fucking big.
My friend decided it was time to play this classic again. Neither of us still had the discs so we bought the $20 box that has AoM and AoT. The reason for this thread is that I was wondering if anyone knew of some good maps to look for. I normally just play with 1 or 2 friends against 1-2 teams of bots. Any maps that the bots will actually use would be awesome.
We like to play maps were we can turtle up and then unleash huge armies on the bots. I would like to try to make a map in the editor but I'm wondering if I can get the bots to work on it. Any advice on this would be appreciated.
***If anyone else is planning on getting the $20 pack with both games, be warned that Microsoft sold the rights to anyone interested in selling it. Mine is from Valuesoft or somesuch and every copy has the same CD key and it won't let you play on the Ensemble Online server. We're only able to play over direct IP.***
But, if you are after mere parlor tricks, you will be sorely disappointed. For if I reach behind your ear, it will not be a nickel I pull out, but your very soul!
can you build a kratos unit to kill everything on the map?
Not quite, the Atlanteans (xpac faction) got fanatics, dual-wielding killing machines that counter all!
My best advice if your going to be playing with friends, make it an in-house rule to never build Titans (I think that Titan-building is contained into it's own seprate age unique to them, so you might be able to limit it with in-game options) as, while they are impressive and awesome in their own right, muck up much of the AoE-esque fun of this game in a bad way.
I love AoM/T. I'm inclined to agree with Loki to a degree. While Titans really do seem to be unstoppable it really is a chore to build one. From what I remember anyhow. Anyhow, whenever I played I think we only used the maps that came with the game. I'll do some searching for custom maps and see if I can find anything though.

It was just sending waves of regular troops over to be slaughtered, with no real means of rebuilding our armies. Soon it was just two titans staring at each other from the two island - totally impossible to finish.

That sounds like something out of Warhammer 40k.
My own story of AOM inanity: I was Egyptians, worshiping Set. Set priests can convert animals to your side, which can be a handy way of getting food on some maps.
Anyway, I've sent out a group of priests and am busily taking over the minds of whooping cranes and baboons, sending them back to my base. I glance at my resources and notice I don't have much food.
I glance at the minimap and see none of my animal friends are there. But several enemy food harvesting points are.
My opponent had been following my priest squad and slaughtering the animals I sent back to my base. I had been working to provide him with resources.
Oh man, I remember rushing home in Gr.9 to play this online with my friends. We used to play 2+ hour games of the Trojan Wall maps. I wish I still had free time like that.

The AI will indeed play whatever civ you give it on the map editor. At least it does on mine. You can even set it to share control with a human player so that human and computer can fight each other for control.
One time in an online match I almost won by building a wonder. Another ten seconds ... but everyone ganged up on me when they realized how close I was to winning. Holding off 4 other players while my peasants hammer away is intense.
I would buy a game in which the defense against titans was to build a tiny little Kratos who would jump onto them, climb all over them, and just stab them 8,000,000 times until they fell over.
For some empires the anti-titan character would be the Wanderer

Damn it, why is the IP owned by Microsoft and not Sony? I would buy that in a second. Actually, someone should make a mod of it. That alone would make me rebuild my PC and get this game again.

Because it was made by ensemble studios, who were owned by microsoft.
I always smirk when I pop Age of Mythologies DS into my DS and see the microsoft stuff on screen.

Anyway, yeah, titans mess up the game. Nothing except strong flying units (like the Nidhogg) have a chance of hurting them to any degree.
Ugh yes!
Me and some friends were playing this at a gaming café some years back, we had a very long game. We were playing some islands map and eventually all resources were depleted when there was just me versus one other guy. We each had a titan on our separate islands, and they could not cross water.
It was just sending waves of regular troops over to be slaughtered, with no real means of rebuilding our armies. Soon it was just two titans staring at each other from the two island - totally impossible to finish.
Otherwise AoM and its xpac are really awesome!

I stopped playing Set for a while after that.

Anybody up for a game?
I'd be up for it another day, perhaps.
