Just got my first taste of invasion. As soon as I enter 4-1, I invite a blue phantom into the game and less than a minute later I get the invasion message. Unfortunately, the black phantom made short work of my buddy, then proceeded to spear me to death in about 2 hits. At least it was at the beginning so I didn't lose much playtime.
Hmm, so there really is a thread about this game here. It's strangely tiny though, compared to the hundred+ threads I've seen in other forums. Regardless, this is the only thread where I'll actually post.
I received this game earlier this week, and it lives well up to the hype everyone has given. It's also hard as balls which causes me to rage quite a bit, but I can't stop playing either, so the quick deaths probably add to the experience.
Anyway, I haven't been able to find a beginner's guide online, so I've got some questions about this game I hope you can answer.
1. Is there any advantage at all in having a soul body vs a living one?
2. I've entered people's worlds as a phantom, but how can I have people join my game (ie host)?
3. If I kill a boss or rescue an NPC in multiplayer, does that transfer over to my single player campaign?
4. If the answer is no, does it apply if I'm the host?
5. How does the Hide spell work? I've tried to sneak up on those octopus guards in the jail, but they still attack me at times. Does it silent my steps, or make me invisible?
6. Can I sell items I don't want?
7. If the answer is a no, is there any point in keeping items I don't need (ie bundles of slave shields)?
8. Does a weapon's strength decrease only when the weapon breaks, or does it gradually get weaker as it reaches the point of breaking?
9. Can you visit any area in any order and defeat its story boss with what you have, or is there an unseen level cap?
10. What happens if you manage to kill an NPC (though this is really a followup to "can NPCs be killed")?
11. How the heck do you do gestures in multiplayer? The manual says to shake the controller, but I haven't been able to gesture at all.
12. Why doesn't this game have voice chat? Could there be voice chat in the future?

Isn't that what the blueye stone you get near the start is for?

I'm pretty sure it works like the thiefs ring you get early on, it just reduces the distance at which enemies detect you
6. Can I sell items I don't want?
Not that I know of
7. If the answer is a no, is there any point in keeping items I don't need (ie bundles of slave shields)?
Don't think so, but I keep them anyway because hey, unlimited storage space
8. Does a weapon's strength decrease only when the weapon breaks, or does it gradually get weaker as it reaches the point of breaking?
From what i've seen they're full strength until they break
9. Can you visit any area in any order and defeat its story boss with what you have, or is there an unseen level cap?
Yes, aside from one certain zone that stops you from progressing very temporarily near the start
10. What happens if you manage to kill an NPC (though this is really a followup to "can NPCs be killed")?
Your stuck without that NPC's services for the rest of the game
11. How the heck do you do gestures in multiplayer? The manual says to shake the controller, but I haven't been able to gesture at all.

Well, those are the only ones I think i know the answers to

1. Soul body has 50% health (75% with a ring found on the first stage) but you cannot be invaded by black phantoms and can join others as a blue phantom or invade as a black phantom.
2.Must be in Physical form to summon others and be invaded. You will see a blue message on the ground, that is someones little message saying Pull me in.
3. No, souls collected do though, not the boss souls though ie. Lead Soul
4. Yes
5. It lowers your aggro range. So they still see you you can just get alot closer. As a black phantom the spell also obscures you and makes the range in which others see you smaller.
6. No
7. No limit on the stockpile so no harm in keeping them. Honestly more work to dump them all.
8. Not sure on this one.
9. Anywhere anytime, just some are naturally harder when beginning.
10. Grab their phat loot, and they also disappear for the rest of that game. They will return upon a New Game +
11. Hold X and select from the menu.
12. Thank god it doesn't. And I hope it never does.
I bought the game for $61 including shipping from YesAsia (new member coupon), but it also took at least 3 weeks to arrive, so up to you.
Anyway, I've got 26,000 souls right now, so I'm trying to save up 50,000 so I can buy that ring from the singing lady in the jail, the one that increases the number of souls collected from enemies.
What's the quickest method to obtain that many souls? My guess is to join a multiplayer game in front of a boss over and over, but to do that I have to be a soul.
Which leads to my next question: What are the differences with the stones that turn you into a soul?

if you can use any sort of bow decently (my knight can do it with a compound + 2 shortbow) there's a reaper in 4-2 that takes about 5 seconds to kill + 30 seconds or so to run to him from the archstone and gives 5k souls per death. The souls are actually a translation misprint, they don't turn you into a soul, they GIVE you souls, different amounts depending on which one, just use them all
Well geez. The translation is mostly solid (and the voice work is seriously well done, and completely anime VA free), but the items with typos have some serious engrish issues (including that weird towel head item).

Which world is 4-2?
The shrine of storms, if you haven't passed the first area you can get some decent XP from the skeletons in it too, but its pretty easy to pass and has imho the easiest boss in the game so i'd just beat it and farm the reaper
edit: I was 12 hours into the game before I found out the souls were a translation misprint on the demon's souls wiki too, using all of them at once was a nice boost

That's the easiest boss in the game and a good place to farm? Would I be able to take on 4-1 and 4-2 when I've only completed 1-1? I need souls badly!

Seriously? I read the message that "You need to be Soul Level 400" to survive, and so far it seems like the toughest area yet. It's got super fast knight things that make like Blanka and roll into you, and further in has that tutorial boss as a standard enemy and a bunch of flying manta ray things that probably requires a bunch of arrows to take down.
Still, I wouldn't mind braving it.
Oh, and how do you increase your magic capacity? Protection+Soul Arrow would make life easier.

Attempting it straight after 1-1 might probably be a bit tough, the standard enemies give a lot of orbs but they also hit pretty hard... I went 1-1, 1-2, 4-1 then onto the 2's myself.
edit: as to the 4 area, It really seems to favor melee characters which is a rarity, I found the skeletons much easier than say the lizardmen in 2 as i'd just block their first roll/attack with my shield then kill them with a longsword before they could do anything else. The manta ray things hit hard, but they only take 2 or 3 arrows to die at low levels
You can skip that tutorial dude by just running past him and ignore the flying rays. At least, that's what I did. As for the boss, all I did was stand above it and shoot it to death with a long bow.
I don't have a bow or arrows, and 1-2 is still too hard for me (god damn blue knights and archers). I've only really focused on 1-1, and haven't played since then. I'm trying to beat NWN2 before I go into these open-ended kind of games. Luckily, I'm almost done with expansion pack.

Generally, unless someone really needs souls, serious time spent on power leveling/grinding should be saved for a NG+ where you get twice the exp. Don't grind more than you absolutely have to in your first game.
The manta fight above works, and the first reaper in 4-2 does too, for about 12k a pop.
The best way, though, is:
*Actual spoilers below. Don't click it unless you want stuff potentially spoiled*
NG+, 4-2, pure black tendency. Use a bow/soul sucker/thirst. Wear a graverobber's ring/ring of avarice/silver bracelet if female.
Backtrack from the Old Hero waypoint. Kill the last 4-2 reaper with a bow. Sneak up on the black dual wielding dude, use thirst and soul sucker. Quickly move on before thirst expires and kill the first of the two golden skeletons further on.
Thirst will have expired, so I usually wouldn't bother with the second golden skeleton.
140-150k-ish exp, or something like that. 3-5 minutes, depending.
About the ring of avarice: Don't worry about it. There are far better rings to be wearing as you clear levels, I really wouldn't grind for it early on. Also, remember that there are generally more ways than one for getting any given item.
About 4-1:
Tip 1. is to use a blunt weapon on the rolling dudes. Mace will work, I like the iron knucles for swift death. Use a weapon buff for extra damage.
Tip 2. Thief's ring will keep some manta fire off you.
I would find a weapon/weapon type you like (speed, reach, 'I actually have one of these' etc), for whatever reason, and upgrade that. Then it's a matter of picking an upgrade tree based on your stats/preference/available materials.
Also, if you are short on materials and want to upgrade a shield too, consider picking a weapon that doesn't conflict with that in terms of whatever material type you need - less of an issue if you branch out into something like crescent, for magic users, or what have you.
If you like the performance of a falcion, there's nothing wrong with upgrading one a bit.
I wanted to try out a few spells I hadn't used much, to get an idea of relative power and such.
Clicking the spoiler will only reveal (some, I only tested offensive spells, for their damage primarily, and only those with variable damage/measurable damage) spell names. You can click individual spoilers if you are curious how a spell stacks up against, say, the basic Soul Arrow.
Spell damage comparison test, basic:
Test Subject:
1-1 ’Dregling’ [NG+++], the basic enemy from 1-1, the first enemy you meet. I made sure to always attack from the front, and never while they were attacking to avoid extra damage. There can be some minor, single digit variations from attack to attack, so each damage listing comes with a +/- 5 damage disclaimer. Nothing significant.
Stats:
Magic: 60
Faith: 40
Notes:
I’ll use a Wooden Catalyst for everything since the idea is to compare damage between the spells.
I've only tested spells with variable damage/measurable damage, apart from the two cloud spells, since people tend to be curious about those.
Refer to ‘Fire Spray - advanced’ and ‘Rage of God - advanced’ to see the damage difference with various other modifying items equipped, and with the various catalysts/talismans. Beware of spoilers on these two entries.
Soul Arrow
Damage:
Wooden Catalyst: 155
Soul Light
Damage:
Wooden Catalyst: 241
Non damage benefit: Pierces enemies. Can hit multiple enemies.
Moving Soul Arrow
Damage:
Wooden Catalyst: 332
Non damage benefit: Can be ‘pre loaded’ and will attack as you approach the enemy. Will sometimes not reach the enemy/will sometimes display attack ranger shorter than lock on range.
Flame Thrower
Damage:
Wooden Catalyst: 191
Fireball
Damage:
Wooden Catalyst: 281
Non damage benefit: Area of effect attack. Can hit multiple enemies.
Fire Spray
Damage:
Wooden Catalyst: 55
Non damage benefit: Can cast while moving.
Ignite
Damage:
Wooden Catalyst: 370
Notes: Very short range, will be problematic against some enemies. Basically melee range, and the casting time isn’t always fast enough to make it safe against later enemies.
Firestorm
Damage:
Wooden Catalyst: 456
Notes: Damage on minor, single enemies is irrelevant. The benefit to this spell is that it will hit large enemies, or enemies that are not easily knocked down, several times. The potential damage on bosses is, depending on gear/stats, in the thousands. My personal best is 8000+ for one casting.
Poison Cloud
5 damage per tick, fixed damage, limited range. Stacks with Death Cloud.
Non damage benefit: Does not draw aggro.
Notes: Poison Cloud can basically do anything Death Cloud can do, but may take more castings when 'cheesing' a tough opponent.
Death Cloud
6 damage per tick, fixed damage, limited range. Stacks with Poison Cloud, longer total duration than Poison Cloud.
Non damage benefit: Does not draw aggro.
Rage of God (miracle)
Damage:
Talisman of God: 457
Non damage benefit: Can attack through walls and other solid obstacles.
Magic Weapon/Light Weapon
With the above mentioned 60 in magic, using a plain dagger that gives me a base attack of 81:
Kris knife (no upgrades): 64
Ring of Magical Sharpness / Monk's Head Collar (they’ll stack): 74
Ring of Magical Dullness / Dark Silver Shield: 26
Clever Rat’s Ring / Morion Blade (they’ll stack): 113
Clever Rat’s Ring + Morion Blade + Ring of Magical Sharpness: 234
Clever Rat’s Ring + Morion Blade + Ring of Magical Sharpness (with Insanity Catalyst): 312
One, in soul form you do more damage. This is the second reason everyone stays permanently in soul form. (Of course you take more, too, but hey.)
Two, I'll say it again, every single item a vendor sells can be found somewhere in the game (either on the ground, or on a corpse) for free. For my money (or souls) it's not worth paying vendor prices for any expensive item. You simply don't need them that badly.

<AtlusParker> Sorry I'm playing Pokemon and vomiting at the same time so I'm not following the conversation in a linear fashion.
I'm agonizing so badly over soul upgrades " do i want this weapon i'll probably never use or this spell/miracle i'll probably never use?!?! AHH" this has led to me being (i think) over the halfway point of my first playthrough with no decent weapons or spells as i'm too indecisive to use any limited upgrades =/
Miracles - other than Evacuate and at least one of the heals, don't sweat it. Possibly Rage of God, though I could never get the hang of the wind-up time. Weapons, I just picked one and stuck with it. You can't Vagrant Story this game - at least it's a lot harder carrying a bunch of weapons around for different situations - so why try? Plus if you can reach the Nexus easily (Evacuate or Keystones) it's not too much hassle to duck out, swap your loadout, run back to where you were.
Magic I can't offer any advice yet. I haven't actually played DS in a while - Riddick and Stalker SoC taking most of my time - so I haven't progressed with my second character beyond picking everything off with Soul Arrows.

I had a feeling I was doing less damage as a human, so thanks for confirming it.
Still got a couple more unanswered questions.
1. How do I increase my magic holding capacity?
2. What stat do I increase so I can move faster with heavy armor? I see lots of multiplayers sticking to light gear so they can roll faster, but I prefer keeping my defense as high as possible, so my rolls are quite slow with full armor.
3. There are some items hanging down below a steep edge in the jail level, with messages saying to "jump down". The blood splatters show that these people stupid enough to fall never make it. How the heck do you obtain these items?

I was more referring to the boss soul upgrades, i.e do i want to use a certain demon's soul for a large sword of searching, or one time revival (thats a particular toughy as I think i'd use both of them extensively)
edit: snuggles,
1. will increases your magic memory
2. endurance, to roll faster i believe your equip weight has to be half or less than your total allowable equip weight - although i'm also a heavy armor user and have never had my equip weight anywhere near that low, so i just figured screw it and started carrying around the biggest shield i could instead, nothing short of a boss can break my block now
The wiki is a little difficult to follow but it does explain how to reach all of the hidden items. Plus messages are two-fold, kind of thing - on the one hand, you can't take them all literally, yet on the other don't assume that just because there are bloodstains down there the message is lying and the jump is always fatal! ;-) Again, I know it's an easy thing to say having beaten the game but I found it a lot more fun just trying and seeing if I could make it - if you've spent all your souls, dying should ultimately be of no consequence.
I'll say this again, too; I think the way this game handles death is far, far better done than either the new Prince of Persia or Fable II (yes I went there :P). It's horrifying to contemplate - the atmosphere and the presentation in general mean you really don't want to be ripped apart, flung off a narrow ledge, set on fire, poked with magical barbs etc. etc. etc... but at the same time no death is ever insurmountable, with careful, skilful play no death should ever rob you permanently of anything valuable, and no death can ever take away anything irreplaceable (EDIT: Yet the game is hard enough replacing what you lost takes real work, therefore giving you the impetus not to lose it again - pay attention, Molyneux!). Playing well leads to a very different experience, getting better means the game becomes a lot easier, and yet death is ever-present and always meaningful.

Although you do reach a Zen state where you're like every now and then, "Oh... I just lost 40,000 souls. Oh. Hum. Oh well."
Either that, or incandescent rage at yourself because the reason you lost 40,000 souls is because you ran right off a cliff while trying to strafe a skeleton. GARADSGHOSDHGODISF.
Having explored more of the worlds, I just realized how claustrophobic this game is. I don't just mean Stonefang Tunnel either, I mean everything seems like you're always fighting on some perilous ledge, or a narrow strip of land, or a small corridor. Makes the experience that much more harrowing.

Its led to me having an extreme love/hate relationship with big weapons. I love how my great axe can kill most things in one hit and knock hordes of enemies flying through the air in one swing, but i've died so many times due to either a guy dodging out of the way on a ledge causing my own swing to pull me off into the abyss or getting attacked in narrow corridors where I can't swing without hitting the ceiling or walls leaving me to frantically try and shield bash enemies to death

Ah, shit. Sorry to hear that.
The game is worth $90, as far as I'm concerned, but the Japanese version is probably too much hassle in the long run when you know there's a more convenient alternative out there.

Eurogamer's is the best, but I linked a couple more in the OP, plus another site with some decent first impressions/interviews/etc.
Read my book. (It has a robot in it.)

Good price? I see around 65USD from the Interwebs.. plus shipping plus waiting..
Go for it.
Maaaan..
That means I'd have to buy a train ticket + subway fare to get this game.. definitely not taking my car or motorcycle in to Manhattan.
Figure 18$ for ticket/subway, plus 73$ for game.. that's 90$ for this
Quit yer bitchin. We had to wait weeks to get this thing and would have gladly paid the extra to have it same day.
He's right. Go buy it.

That's the easiest boss in the game and a good place to farm? Would I be able to take on 4-1 and 4-2 when I've only completed 1-1? I need souls badly!
Still, I wouldn't mind braving it.
Oh, and how do you increase your magic capacity? Protection+Soul Arrow would make life easier.

edit: as to the 4 area, It really seems to favor melee characters which is a rarity, I found the skeletons much easier than say the lizardmen in 2 as i'd just block their first roll/attack with my shield then kill them with a longsword before they could do anything else. The manta ray things hit hard, but they only take 2 or 3 arrows to die at low levels
The manta fight above works, and the first reaper in 4-2 does too, for about 12k a pop.
The best way, though, is:
*Actual spoilers below. Don't click it unless you want stuff potentially spoiled*
Tip 3. Cheese/actual spoiler:

Soul Arrow
Wooden Catalyst: 155
Soul Light
Wooden Catalyst: 241
Non damage benefit: Pierces enemies. Can hit multiple enemies.
Moving Soul Arrow
Wooden Catalyst: 332
Non damage benefit: Can be ‘pre loaded’ and will attack as you approach the enemy. Will sometimes not reach the enemy/will sometimes display attack ranger shorter than lock on range.
Flame Thrower
Wooden Catalyst: 191
Fireball
Wooden Catalyst: 281
Non damage benefit: Area of effect attack. Can hit multiple enemies.
Fire Spray
Wooden Catalyst: 55
Non damage benefit: Can cast while moving.
Ignite
Wooden Catalyst: 370
Notes: Very short range, will be problematic against some enemies. Basically melee range, and the casting time isn’t always fast enough to make it safe against later enemies.
Firestorm
Wooden Catalyst: 456
Notes: Damage on minor, single enemies is irrelevant. The benefit to this spell is that it will hit large enemies, or enemies that are not easily knocked down, several times. The potential damage on bosses is, depending on gear/stats, in the thousands. My personal best is 8000+ for one casting.
Poison Cloud
Non damage benefit: Does not draw aggro.
Notes: Poison Cloud can basically do anything Death Cloud can do, but may take more castings when 'cheesing' a tough opponent.
Death Cloud
Non damage benefit: Does not draw aggro.
Rage of God (miracle)
Talisman of God: 457
Non damage benefit: Can attack through walls and other solid obstacles.
Magic Weapon/Light Weapon
Magic Weapon: 217
Light Weapon: 303
Same duration on both, magical damage.
Fire Spray - Advanced
Silver Catalyst: 45
Wooden Catalyst: 55
Talisman of Beasts: 77
Insanity Catalyst: 80
Wooden Catalyst + damage boosting item:
Kris knife (no upgrades): 64
Ring of Magical Sharpness / Monk's Head Collar (they’ll stack): 74
Ring of Magical Dullness / Dark Silver Shield: 26
Clever Rat’s Ring / Morion Blade (they’ll stack): 113
Clever Rat’s Ring + Morion Blade + Ring of Magical Sharpness: 234
Clever Rat’s Ring + Morion Blade + Ring of Magical Sharpness (with Insanity Catalyst): 312
Rage of God - Advanced
Talisman of God: 457
Talisman of Beasts: 564
Talisman of God + Ring of Sincere Prayer: 640
One, in soul form you do more damage. This is the second reason everyone stays permanently in soul form. (Of course you take more, too, but hey.)
Two, I'll say it again, every single item a vendor sells can be found somewhere in the game (either on the ground, or on a corpse) for free. For my money (or souls) it's not worth paying vendor prices for any expensive item. You simply don't need them that badly.

I read the Eurogamer review.. ....D:D:
You have chosen...wisely.
Poorly.
I was about to hop on the train and I called them and they said there were OOS. (Their site said they had finally gotten stock in)
There are 2 other stores in Manhattan I can go to but there is no guarantee either will have it, plus they are smaller stores.
Do I waste the 20$ for the trip and possibly come out emptyhanded?
Fuck it, I'll be back.
Magic I can't offer any advice yet. I haven't actually played DS in a while - Riddick and Stalker SoC taking most of my time - so I haven't progressed with my second character beyond picking everything off with Soul Arrows.
Read my book. (It has a robot in it.)
Blog||Tumblr|Steam|Twitter|FFXIV|Twitch|YouTube|Podcast|PSN|XBL|DarkZero
edit: snuggles,
1. will increases your magic memory
2. endurance, to roll faster i believe your equip weight has to be half or less than your total allowable equip weight - although i'm also a heavy armor user and have never had my equip weight anywhere near that low, so i just figured screw it and started carrying around the biggest shield i could instead, nothing short of a boss can break my block now
3. no idea =0
Read my book. (It has a robot in it.)
Either that, or incandescent rage at yourself because the reason you lost 40,000 souls is because you ran right off a cliff while trying to strafe a skeleton. GARADSGHOSDHGODISF.
1 shop had A copy of Demon's Souls, it was marked 89$ PLUS it was the JP version not the Asian version, the other store did not have any idea what I was talking about.
Ah, shit. Sorry to hear that.
The game is worth $90, as far as I'm concerned, but the Japanese version is probably too much hassle in the long run when you know there's a more convenient alternative out there.
Read my book. (It has a robot in it.)
I'm on a mission to get this game.
EDIT: Some guy in cali is selling the korean version for 90$ BIN + 4$ shipping..
Every other auction I see is around 20$ less but all shipping from Hong Kong/Singapore..
ehh.. decisions decisions..
I'm going to snipe some ebay auctions.
Wow, this good, very good.
