They're both minibosses later on. You can kill the red dragon on his second appearance (strafing the path on 1-2 that leads to the Tower Knight). AFAIK he's invincible the first time he turns up. You can do it at any level, theoretically, but it'll take a lot longer if you have to use a crossbow or you don't have any way of increasing your ranged damage. The blue dragon only turns up as a boss in 1-3, twice. Kill a dragon the first time you get the chance and they won't turn up for any subsequent or previous encounters - kill the red in 1-2 and he's gone from 1-1.

I just made an error thats going to force me to grind..when you only have one weapon that doesn't suck and is upgraded decently (in my case a great axe + 6) if your going to upgrade it again..make sure you don't upgrade it into something thats too heavy for you to equip unless you also strip off half your armor and don't use anything else in any of your weapon slots
Ouch, bad luck there. You can press square to see the stats of something before upgrading, but you probably knew that.
Bit more on dragons:
Killing the red dragon in 1-2 removes him for the rest of your game. He'll return in a NG+.
The blue dragon can be attacked twice in 1-4. You can take him to half health on the battlements, after which he'll fly away. You'll encounter him shortly, hanging over an entrance you'll need to use. He's easy to evade there, and can be killed from below. Supposedly he takes more damage there if you took him to half health previously in the level. If you kill him, he'll stay killed until a NG+. Biorr will help you in the last blue dragon fight if rescued and still alive. I've found that he only helps there if you rescued him pre Penetrator fight, but that might not be true. He might just feel like staying home some days.
They can both be killed without risk, so using the clever rat's ring/morion blade/whatever is very recommended, otherwise you're looking at a lot of time. I think a basic bow and basic arrows, on the red dragon, requires at least 150 shots.
I'm agonizing so badly over soul upgrades " do i want this weapon i'll probably never use or this spell/miracle i'll probably never use?!?! AHH" this has led to me being (i think) over the halfway point of my first playthrough with no decent weapons or spells as i'm too indecisive to use any limited upgrades =/
I haven't found any must have spells/weapons from boss souls yet, and given that I have everything except for a couple of spells, I doubt I will. Just go nuts!
There's a brief rundown of the damage spells on the previous page, if you're interested. Rage of God has some useful applications, and a lot of people pick that
for gecko killing only
, but it's not mandatory. Likewise, almost everyone picks up either the poison or plague cloud. Almost everyone defaults to the plague cloud, but I personally think it's the poorer choice with that soul. It's all about preference, and you can't really go wrong.
Even your example of a particular sword or a particular miracle, neither has a dramatic impact on the game, as such. Both can be very useful, however.
The miracle doesn't always work well. It won't save you from falling, and if a blow is hard enough to kill you, plus do enough damage to take away the life you would have regained, you'll just die period - which will happen with some bosses. It's still very useful, and so is the sword
I think the toughest choice, where both options provide something really nice, is the Storm King. Can't go wrong with either one, so it's totally up to preference, which is nice.
Heh, seems Grislo's doing a better job of these PSAs than I am. :x :P
Dragons:
I never killed either, so I didn't know you can't kill the blue one first time he turns up. Doh, etc., etc. Can't believe I forgot to mention Biorr, though, given I did actually rescue him, not to mention he took out the Penetrator single-handedly for me!
Again, yes, magic and miracles really are down to individual preference. I still would call Evacuate an absolute must-have, though. Obviously you can beat the game without it... but it was almost literally a lifesaver for me on multiple occasions, and I can't imagine doing all the backtracking going without would require.

I just got pulled into someone's game to fight the
Spider Boss from 2-1 I think.
It was a female character, in what appeared to be a leather outfit, equipped with Bow (she alternated between ranged and melee, though.) She did most of the work, seeing as my leveling still costs about 2300 souls. She brought one other guy in, who was decked out in some heavy armor and large shield. Amusingly, he died. I got enough souls for a level and upgrades/repairs, so that was cool.
More importantly, I learned how to fight the boss. :^:
(edit)
To add to that, I am liking the flexibility of flipping between single and double handed. I am getting effective at switching right before an attack, and then back again before going on the defensive. Also, I am using a Halberd, and the double handed attacks work much better in the confined areas.

Yeah, I'd say that's a must buy too. It was one of the first more expensive (relatively speaking) items I deliberately saved for.
Very nice of them not to require a boss soul or anything funky for it.
For those who do kill the red dragon:
Don't forget to take advantage of him being gone - get the winged spear from the long bridge, and a rather nice shield from the area near his nest.

my character only has one miracle slot, and in my case its much better to have heal and just use splinters of keystone imo, by midgame you have enough souls that they're really only the equivalent of pocket change to buy, don't use mana/miracle slots and go off quicker than the miracle in case of emergencies. Even when i do manage to get two slots i think i'll dump heal, go towards rage of the gods and still stick with keystones

you can get all the stuff fairly easily without killing him as long as you don't mind dying, just time your run right after he breathes fire, grab all the items and get roasted, its what I did before I finished 1-1 the first time
edit: oh god, I thought i was a badass, slaughtering people w/ my meat cleaver, decked out in full gloom armor, killing with ease..then i tried to fight black phantom scirvir..he heals faster than I can hurt him and 1 hit kills me..ohnoes?
I did beat 5-2 tonight, along with 5-3. I fought Garl on a ledge for what felt like 15 minutes. He fully healed himself twice before I finally decided to switch up to a two-handed stance on my long sword. I made short work of him then. Two hands on the hilt FTW.
The dark silver armor and shield he drops are spectacular.
I have a feeling i'm gimping my character..I started out going pure melee, but once i hit 30 str / 20 vit / 25 endurance I started thinking "hey, magic is kinda useful even at low levels and it sure would be nice to be able to use thirst and soulsucker in NG+" so now while my strength stats are still higher magic/faith/etc are swiftly catching up leaving me master of nothing =/ although at least the high faith let me use the meat cleaver which turned out to be the best thing ever, insane damage + hp leech? yes please

Only the 1-4 boss to go, and I'm moving onto NG+.
5-2 is the one place that I thought really felt out of place with the entire zone's level design. I loved the falling into the abyss feeling I got in the entire level, but when I hit that swamp, everything just sort of ground to a halt and it felt more like a chore to trudge through it all rather than feeling on edge.

Yeah, there's only one item there of real value, and dying doesn't mean much. I ended up grabbing the stuff while the dragon was sitting right there, and it worked out well enough.
I never bothered with the basic heal spell, though, and I've never learned the advanced one since item healing works well for me. Never really felt that Rage of God was useful for my character in general either, which is interesting. I do see a lot of people using it though. I would prefer Anti-magic Field (fairly situational too) or One-time Revival.
Scirvir can be pretty nasty. Him and black phantom Selen gave me the most trouble.
So, I can't get past the archers and blue knights in 1-2, as I keep saying. And in 2-1, I can't get past that asshole who blocks the door and spams fireballs. God dammit. I'm practically completely dry of health items, and I'm pretty much broke.

If it's the first fireball guy in 2-1, just ignore him. The room where he's occupying the back door out has an exit to your right as you enter, which is where you want to go.
You can probably time it right and avoid his fireball. There's a normal enemy right where you need to enter, but you can handle him if you go in with your shield up.
Alternatively, which shields do you have? If you've got one with fire resistance, you might be able to kill him. You don't have to fight him, though, so I'd just avoid him. He won't follow you.
Another alternative: Get a blue phantom to help you with either level. 1-2 isn't very critical, though. There's zero reason to do it right now.
Well it doesn't really matter, because I suck copious amounts of balls at this game where I end up throwing my controller down in frustration. I just rage quit after getting destroyed in every single map I had access to.

Are you using the thieve's ring? It's very useful no matter your character.
If you have a range attack, either magic or bow, you can find a spot to the side of the doorway so you can hit the minister but he won't be able to hit you. Lame, but it works. Otherwise just stand well out of his sight line and shoot, dodge, shoot.
I didn't bother with the Tower Knight until I was well into the game. You can't progress after him until you beat another world's final boss anyhow.
"Wear the thief's ring!" should actually be in the OP. In some kind of neon colour.
I don't think you actually have to fight any minister in 2-1, do you? The first three (tower by the rock tossers, by the dogs, across the crumbling bridge) can be ignored/dodged. Are there any more?
So I have this game also, and I started playing this weekend.
I started with a knight. I however ate Phalanx's soul, and then found out I should not have done that. So Im now going to start over. But I don't know what class to play. I started a Barbarian last night cause I have been itching to play a big guy with an even bigger axe for a few years now(Dreamed of playing it in D&D online but that never happened). He starts out with a club though, and his lack of armor is getting my ass kicked.
I don't know what to play! Can any character wear/use anything given the right amount of strength/dexterity?

Yep. Classes mean little, other than starting equipment and a push in the direction you want to go.
I wouldn't worry too much about consuming demon souls. You're not going to get everything your first time through. And you won't even be able to create special weapons until you get access to the blacksmith in 2-1. Assuming STR is your main stat, vanilla +10 weapons generally are the most powerful anyhow.
While it's true that you'll need multiple (4) playthroughs to get everything, I wouldn't eat any boss souls on the first run. You don't know if you'll want whatever they'd have offered, and the amount of souls gained is pitiful.
I don't think any class starts with an axe. The temple knight has a halberd? Not very exciting.
One of the better starting weapons is the spear, on the soldier.
EDIT: Yes, if you can buff a weapon, things will stack.
What? I thought they couldn't. I distinctly remember not being able to do anything with my bastard sword once I'd made it Blessed. Tried equipping sticky white stuff, turpentine... nothing. My character just wouldn't apply it.

Well if you decide you want to get rid of it I'll be happy to take it off your hands for a cool $60. :winky:
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
Anyone want to try and get together this evening and bust out a level? As previously said, I'm going to be starting a new character. So I have to beat 1-1, but after that I should be able to grab any Blue's that would like to do a level(or most of the level. I won't have the equip to kill that spider, but maybe the Demon guard in 1-2 as he doesn't seem that difficult with 2 blue's with you).
Lemme know and we can work out a way to communicate and get to the same area. Probrably using AIM to message eachother. This game has me all kinds of excited.
The temple knight has a halberd? Not very exciting.
LIES!
I've come to love the upgraded Halberd (at least in 1-1, 1-2, and 2-1.) I have it at +5 or +6, and its very efficient if you get good at alternating between single and double handed.
Dashui, don't give up!
1-2
Once you make it to the third bridge, ready up some turpentine. If you can't kill the archers in one hit, yet, plan on using the turpentine.
Once you follow the dragon's flames, stay to the left side as you approach the archers. When they fire, shift to the right side and then stand behind the cart. In soul form, without the thief's ring, this should be a safe distance from the first blue knight. Heal and turp as needed, but keep in mind that one of the archers has a clear shot of you in this position, so kill him or time your item usage properly.
When you are ready to fight the blue knight, go ahead and take out the archers. With turp, they should be one shot kills, so don't waste stamina on unnecessary swings. The blue knight himself is pretty easy if you kite him out of the threshold, and then circle strafe behind him after one of his more powerful attacks. Alternating between two handed for attacks, and single handed for defending will help. When the blue knight drops below a threshold of health, he will go on the defensive and heal, so just wait for him to start healing and get an attack or two in.
2-1
Skip that guy for now.
If you really want to beat him, then approach him so that he attacks, and destroys the barrels. Do this a few times to clear out the room as best you can.
Once the room is relatively clear, wait for him to attack, then run in and stay to the right side. There should be a shelf or something to obstruct his attacks, and he'll most likely be attacking the doorway anyways. He doesn't seem to stagger, so just time yourself to go in and attack him once or twice before fleeing from his next attack.
Thief's Ring
1-1
There is a side area where you rescue some armored guy, which is followed by another side area with a merchant (both NPC's are gone after you clear 1-1.) Where you rescue the armored guy, there is a ledge with a corpse and an item. That item is the ring. To get it, backtrack about 50 yards and you should find yourself on some stairs overlooking the item on the ledge. Do a running fall off the stairs so that you clear the lifted edge of the walkway below the stairs.
What? I thought they couldn't. I distinctly remember not being able to do anything with my bastard sword once I'd made it Blessed. Tried equipping sticky white stuff, turpentine... nothing. My character just wouldn't apply it.
No, some specialty upgrades and 'unique' weapons can't be buffed, in which case there's nothing you can do.
His basic weapon, which already has a special affect, can still be buffed with fire or magic, though, and retains the original effect along with the new.
There are cases, like with the Blueblood Sword, where you actually can apply fire to a magical weapon, or even further enhance it with magic. You can do it with some of the big 2-handers as well, whereas other weapons can't be upgraded at all. It seems a bit random at times.
EDIT: I'll stand by my halberd comment. It just doesn't give me that special tingly feeling in the pants.
EDIT:I'll stand by my halberd comment. It just doesn't give me that special tingly feeling in the pants.
If you want a tingly feeling in your pants I think you need to go with a great sword, almost the same reach as a halberd or spear, only with more damage, and its a giant sword?! yes please.
on an unrelated note the 1-3 boss battle is hilariously awesome
I walk in, see him charging me so i cast poison cloud in front of me, pull out my shield and hunker down to block, only right before he hits my poison cloud he makes a right angle turn, heads off to the side and gets jumped and single handedly slaughtered by bior, i was not expecting that o_O
Crescent uchigatanas give me that tingly feeling. So, so fast and I can do loads of attacks without running out of stamina. Mmm...
If I want to play with a really big weapon I'll probably just whip out my meat cleaver (wink wink, nudge nudge), even if keel smasher looks more badass - it's just a big, fuck-off lump of metal.
I upgraded a tower shield to +5 too, which is silly and awesome. Totally unnecessary and not recommened, but awesome.
Also, yes, that is the most awesome fight. There is a very specific kind of martial art called 'the Way of the Biorr'. It's highly effective.

Bahh, who needs to do loads of attacks when everything is lying on the floor stunned or dead after one swing ? :winky:
The cleavers nice, but it has a slightly shorter range than the great sword, which has come back to haunt me on many occasions when i've used it.
Whats wrong with the tower shield btw? I currently have a +2 i'm in the process of upgrading, but i'm still undecided if i want to use it, the knight shield or the flame shield as my main
It weighs 30, which is rather much. Purple flame is only very slightly weaker in hit res, and weighs less than a third. The fire res on that is probably also a bit better than the higher magic res on the tower shield, but dammit, I like having a huge shield.
I don't really have anything more to spend colourless souls on anyway.
*sigh* i was just in the process of doing a bunch of black/white world tendency events and all my worlds reset to neutral, I have no idea how the hell that could even happen since i only play in offline mode which the bugs aren't supposed to affect =/ no keel smasher among other things (most of the white world things) for me until new game + i guess
Theres a world tendency screen in the start menu, if the slabs are glowing they're either white or pure white (both look identical) if they're just normal tannish stone color they're neutral and if they're black they're black

If they're black you're getting fucked by black phantoms and bigger hordes.
Do the black phantom NPCs and whatnot start turning up as soon as your world tendency goes dark? I thought it had to get pure black before any of that happened.

Well if you decide you want to get rid of it I'll be happy to take it off your hands for a cool $60. :winky:
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
Lemme know and we can work out a way to communicate and get to the same area. Probrably using AIM to message eachother. This game has me all kinds of excited.
LIES!
I've come to love the upgraded Halberd (at least in 1-1, 1-2, and 2-1.) I have it at +5 or +6, and its very efficient if you get good at alternating between single and double handed.
Dashui, don't give up!
1-2
2-1
Once the room is relatively clear, wait for him to attack, then run in and stay to the right side. There should be a shelf or something to obstruct his attacks, and he'll most likely be attacking the doorway anyways. He doesn't seem to stagger, so just time yourself to go in and attack him once or twice before fleeing from his next attack.

If you want a tingly feeling in your pants I think you need to go with a great sword, almost the same reach as a halberd or spear, only with more damage, and its a giant sword?! yes please.
on an unrelated note the 1-3 boss battle is hilariously awesome
If I want to play with a really big weapon I'll probably just whip out my meat cleaver (wink wink, nudge nudge), even if keel smasher looks more badass - it's just a big, fuck-off lump of metal.
I upgraded a tower shield to +5 too, which is silly and awesome. Totally unnecessary and not recommened, but awesome.
Also, yes, that is the most awesome fight. There is a very specific kind of martial art called 'the Way of the Biorr'. It's highly effective.
I don't really have anything more to spend colourless souls on anyway.
More games should have grateful drunken Scotsmen (or whatever the Boletarian equivalent is) with a similar sense of honour. :P

If they're black you're getting fucked by black phantoms and bigger hordes.
