Do the black phantom NPCs and whatnot start turning up as soon as your world tendency goes dark? I thought it had to get pure black before any of that happened.
It has to be pure black. Most black phantoms really aren't that bad though, in fact scirvir is the only one i've run into thats given me any trouble.

Satsuki would kill me in one blow every time he appeared (I ended up going somewhere else and pushing myself towards white to get rid of him). Poor ol' Ostrava was also a bit of a struggle.

THey one hit kill me too, usually through all my heavy armor and blocking shield, but they have no knockdown resistance, so if you use a big weapon its easy to keep them lying on the ground unable to move or attack until they're dead

Nah, I never got a single big weapon the entire way through my first play. Blessed bastard sword +5 was the best I managed. Nice reach, though, and the buff was useful.

The temple knight has a halberd? Not very exciting.

    LIES!

I've come to love the upgraded Halberd (at least in 1-1, 1-2, and 2-1.) I have it at +5 or +6, and its very efficient if you get good at alternating between single and double handed.

    Dashui, don't give up!

    1-2
Once you make it to the third bridge, ready up some turpentine. If you can't kill the archers in one hit, yet, plan on using the turpentine.

Once you follow the dragon's flames, stay to the left side as you approach the archers. When they fire, shift to the right side and then stand behind the cart. In soul form, without the thief's ring, this should be a safe distance from the first blue knight. Heal and turp as needed, but keep in mind that one of the archers has a clear shot of you in this position, so kill him or time your item usage properly.

When you are ready to fight the blue knight, go ahead and take out the archers. With turp, they should be one shot kills, so don't waste stamina on unnecessary swings. The blue knight himself is pretty easy if you kite him out of the threshold, and then circle strafe behind him after one of his more powerful attacks. Alternating between two handed for attacks, and single handed for defending will help. When the blue knight drops below a threshold of health, he will go on the defensive and heal, so just wait for him to start healing and get an attack or two in.

    2-1
    Skip that guy for now.
If you really want to beat him, then approach him so that he attacks, and destroys the barrels. Do this a few times to clear out the room as best you can.

Once the room is relatively clear, wait for him to attack, then run in and stay to the right side. There should be a shelf or something to obstruct his attacks, and he'll most likely be attacking the doorway anyways. He doesn't seem to stagger, so just time yourself to go in and attack him once or twice before fleeing from his next attack.

    Thief's Ring
    1-1
There is a side area where you rescue some armored guy, which is followed by another side area with a merchant (both NPC's are gone after you clear 1-1.) Where you rescue the armored guy, there is a ledge with a corpse and an item. That item is the ring. To get it, backtrack about 50 yards and you should find yourself on some stairs overlooking the item on the ledge. Do a running fall off the stairs so that you clear the lifted edge of the walkway below the stairs.

Thanks for the tips. I'll try again and again and again and again. EVENTUALLY, I might actually get further in the game! I still don't quite know how to get to the Thief's Ring, though. I never rescued an armored guy, but I did find a merchant. He was on this bridge that had a roof, to the right, and the door was blocked by a bunch of barricades. Ahead of him was a guy with a spear and sword. Continuing on, three guys with jump down and come after you before going up a large set of stairs where a blue knight would be waiting at the top. Is that the right area?

Also, I'm playing as a knight, so I have fluted armor and a longsword and bastard sword. Enemies with spears TEAR ME UP. Someone on the last page said soldiers start with a spear. Should I start with that class, perhaps? The wiki page says it's the basic balanced class (although the Knight seemed pretty balanced to me) and the best class to start with if you're having trouble. I've only beaten 1-1 so I'm not far into the game with my knight.

Its actually pretty easy to take out spear guys with a shield + bastard sword, block until they hit you, then when they're staggered from hitting your shield do a strong hit with the bastard sword, it should take off half their health or so and knock them down, then when they're lying helpless on the ground hit em with another shot and they should be dead

Just slightly earlier than that area, actually.
It's the first time you meet a blue knight. You've just come up some stairs, and you can head forward to the blue knight guarding a fog gate or do a 180 and meet a red eyed knight with a spear.

If you go through that fog gate, there's some stairs heading down. If you go all the way down, you'll be forced to do a 180 and you'll see a guy throwing a firebomb at some barrels when you get close. If you look to your right while facing the dude, you'll see a small wall that prevents you from falling off the walkway.

Now, the trick is to not head all the way down those stairs. Instead, you'll need to go, say, halfway down the stairs and aim your jump precisely so that you fall on to the small barrier wall that prevents you from falling off the walkway. Once you land on the wall, turn right, head straight until you hit a wall (all the while balancing on the barrier wall), then turn left and if you've done it right, you should see an armoured dude. Drop down and talk, and there's a corpse nearby with the ring.

You can buy turpentine from a merchant but it is expensive, 500 souls, for what your making the beginning. Just kill the fire dudes over and over again and it will drop for you. The combat is very much like monster hunter, patience always pays off. Like others have suggested wait for them to bounce on your shield then strike once. Then shield up or roll away and square up for another round.

I guess it really depends on your playstyle, my first character was/is a knight and I hate spears so i found the fluted armor to be much more useful, if you like and are good with spears the soldier may be easier for you to start

Alright, cool. My playstyle is pretty much giant, awesome looking swords, and from checking out the pantheon there are some giant, awesome looking swords to be had. I especially like how the character holds a two handed weapon in one hand. It just looks COOL. Now magic, on the other hand, while INCREDIBLY practical and making the game easy, looks absolutely ridiculous. I managed to sweep through the levels as the royal with that wand, but I hated how it looked. It would be better if he would just hold out his palm instead of waving that stupid stick around.

Or you can be Mr Twinkletoes like me! Against spear guys (or anything with a long range, but narrow attack), I'm constantly strafing so that their attacks just miss me because they've aimed at where I was a moment ago. As soon as they've lunged and missed, they're free for some pummelling.

This also includes those ministers if they're firing fireballs at you. Start to close in, let him fire a fireball at where you were, do some damage, and back off. Repeat!

Edit: Having said that though, I also constantly have my shield up just in case I mess up.

Yeah, I was just summoned into two different NG+'s. I could tell because the enemies were a lot tougher than in my game. I think I'm too high level for my first run.

I've been hanging around 1-3 to be summoned. Out of four games, two have had black phantom invaders. The first was in the middle of a fight with a phantom, and immediately after we killed him the host was invaded again.

There's only one really nice item to be had in pure white, in my opinion, and it's not something you need that desperately.

Still, weird that you got bugged in offline mode. That's pretty unlucky. Gives you a chance to get the all black stuff, I guess, if you haven't done them.

Hello peeps, just registered and this is my first post here.

This game looks awesome and its by far the game i look forward to the most. Went as far as to place an import order at yesasia which ive never done before. While on that subject, i was wondering if anyone here has any clue as to when the next batch of the game will be available for shipping (said something about within 30 days when i placed the order 1 and a half week ago but perhaps someone has more accurate info?)?

Ever since I ordered it I've been perusing the web thinking about what type (as far as I've seen people seem to play 1 of 2 types either a big dude with tower shield and 2 hander in 1 hand or fast little dude with knives or something) of character id like to play, I haven't decided on anything yet cause they both have their pro's and cons and i plan on experimenting a bit once i get the game. What id like to ask though is how important is it to have magic/miracles? Can u substitute that white shining light I've seen people shooting in gameplay videos with a good bow or crossbow? Seems to me as if you need some sort of range attack to manage some of the harder mobs in the game. And can the extra hp/dmg u get from placing a few more vit/str make up for not getting spells like total protection or heal etc?

I suppose in short what I'm asking is it worth it to bring will and faith up so you got at least 2 miracle and magic slots each? Or should i just focus on either miracle or magic etc?

I'm a bit of a minmaxer when it comes to games like these which is why I'm asking hehh.

    Anyway thanks from Sweden

The impression I get is that magic will become necessary later on in the game, but you won't need it early on. I have not progressed past 2-1 yet, so I can't be certain, but so far magic/miracles have been completely unnecessary. A bow will work for your ranged attack needs.

So it seems that Magic Use is kind of easy mode. So would it make sense to do your first play through with magic then move to melee next game? Or does magic make it too easy and ruin the experience. (Like playing Dead Space on Normal?)

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

I can't comment on the easyness of starting with a Royal or using magic right away, but you most likely are going to die a 100 times on the first level on your first character no matter what you play. And you never know what kind of character you will play most naturally. The learning curve for ranged and magic is not as steep, but once you understand that R1 is your best friend and you discover each enemies attack moves it you will be dispatching them just as fast if not faster.

It took me 4 hours to understand the mechanics of the game, then I restarted and I'm enjoying the adventure more than the difficulty now. Those first few hours were mostly just saying "Yes, finally a game that is hard as shit.... but damnit is it pissing me off"

This made me really laugh since I have sort of the same feeling going through new game+. Eventually, I just started feeling numb to dying and losing like 50000 souls since it takes about that much to now level up a single stat. It's like someone else said in earlier, it's a zen state thing.

But yeah, sometimes this game can go suck a cock (specifically the fucking manta rays in Shrine of Storms, fuck those guys).

I don't get mad at games like I used to when I was a kid, but Demon's Souls brings back those childhood feelings of wanting to beat up a sibling for my failures. My girlfriend has never seen me mad at a game before, so she laughs...

When I first encountered them they are total bitches but
When they get in aggro range they will turn and fly straight at you, this is the time to snipe them with bow/spells and take them down easy. Otherwise trying to hit them while they're traipsing about is fucking impossible.

Heh, magic user doesn't entirely equate to easy mode. Trust me. I tore through the tutorial and 1-1, but the Shrine of Storms is even worse when I have the choice between poking enemies with a rapier and frantically trying to Soul Arrow them. It's much easier in some ways, and still quite doable with due care and attention to exactly what's going on, but it's not quite the cakewalk I briefly thought it was going to be. Of course, I haven't got any of the heavy-hitting spells yet, so eh. Might change my tune later.

I do miss Evacuate though. 20,000 souls is a hell of a lot right now. :(

But yeah, sometimes this game can go suck a cock

I don't get mad at games like I used to when I was a kid, but Demon's Souls brings back those childhood feelings of wanting to beat up a sibling for my failures. My girlfriend has never seen me mad at a game before, so she laughs...

"Again?! The same FUCKING move!! ARGH!!!"

I think that was after the blue knight at the end of 1-2 broke my shield defense and stabbed me through the heart, twice, leaving my first corpse to disappear. Of course, 2500 souls were a lot at the time. :P

I really never get mad at games any more unless I am already having a shitty day. Ironically this did happen last week and my wife actually asked me to the PS3 off because I was cursing at it. I was dying over and over in the beginning of 2-1 an area I had done a dozen times before. The very next day I beat that level. I absolutely love the challenge of the game but I realize I just can't play it when I am in a bad mood or really drunk.

Seriously. I hate those fucking skeletons so much. They're hard to parry, you can't always sneak attack them from behind EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE CLEARLY BEHIND THEM, and if it's more than one than you can consider yourself officially assraped.

At least I finally beat that Adjuticator boss, but whoever said he was the easiest was full of it. I had a much easier time with the false idols.

Also, that guy who hangs around the first world shrine? He's gone now, and left behind a traditional soldier's soul. Is that supposed to happen? Should I have killed him to nab his stuff?

There's only one really nice item to be had in pure white, in my opinion, and it's not something you need that desperately.

Still, weird that you got bugged in offline mode. That's pretty unlucky. Gives you a chance to get the all black stuff, I guess, if you haven't done them.
Yeah, i was kinda screwed for a few worlds anyway since if your playing offline dying *once* in body form in a world seems to be enough to make sure you can never get it to pure white. My grand plan of doing all the black tendency events has also somewhat backfired as i'm running low on ephemeral eyes and my strategy of farming them from 5-2 has brought forth the realization that the guys I need to farm them from have seemingly infinite hitpoints, aren't stunned by my big weapons, and 1 hit kill me through my shield D:

Man snuggles, the fool's idol wasn't the hardest but it was no pushover, whereas for the adjudicator all you need to do is
stand behind him until he swings, then hit his legs a few times before hiding behind him again
I stand by my statement that he's the easiest in the game..well..it might be a tie between him and the old monk.

And yeah, that guy dies every game, if you talk to him through the course of the game you find out that
he's slowly going crazy and fading away because of his refusal to get demon's souls, eventually he just fades away to nothing

That is one of the most frustrating feelings is when you die at a section you've cleared with ease like a million times before. With me, what I find is that when I clear deep into a level and then die, I just go and rush through the beginning stuff trying to get back to where I was before as fast as possible, making me really careless and more prone to getting wiped out earlier than I should. That's what sucks sometimes is putting in so much effort and concentration only to die and feel like you've lost a lot, then dying even earlier before you can reclaim your souls. It's like you can't switch yourself off for a second or you end up carelessly dying. If I didn't love the game so much, I'd probably have just put the disc back into the case and let it sit on my shelf forever

And those manta rays always own me on that one section where you're fighting skels on the edges of cliffs. It's like you dodge or parry a skeleton's attack only to get wiped out by five projectiles from five different rays you didn't even know where there until you died.

Did you save Yurt? The guy with the sickle and Horned helm looking thing?
Kill him. Kill him now, as he will kill all of your NPCs in the nexus.

Damn this game and making me want to forget everything else(mostly sleep) and play play play. My roomates must be pissed for taking up the TV for 5 hours a night. Pfft, who am I kidding, they must love watching me die to the same damn red face knight over and over again with his cheating run you through and hit 30 times in 2 seconds move making me flail on the living room floor like a two year old who didn't finish his dinner and gets no cookie.

    FUCK YOU RED FACE!

    FUCK YOU RED FACE!

Is this true? Because I just rescued him. He hasn't shown up in the Nexus, but what should I do now? How and why does this occur?

he should show up in the nexus (along with two corpses) after you beat a boss after rescuing him (at least i had to beat a boss before he showed up) He hides in a niche on the second floor of the nexus, just make sure to kill him as soon as you beat the boss and he won't have time to kill any of your npcs. Why does it occur? because as i'm sure you've noticed this game loves to fuck with you =)

That's got to be one of the best things I've heard of in an RPG. You save someone, who then hides in your hub and kills all of the NPC's? Sounds simple, but that's fucking creative.

The whole Yurt thing is so, so evil. Very fitting, but so evil.

    I always
make it a point to rescue him and kill him right away, just to be on the safe side. He can be killed very easily by the cages, and luckily doesn't really put up a fight.

For those having problems with the 4-1 skeletons: Thief's ring, so you can lure them out in places where there's two of them. Block their initial roll and let them start a swing. Then pound them to dust with your Magical Weapon/Light Weapon enchanted (possibly upgraded) Iron Knuckles. They're far from the only weapon that works, but they're super fast and will deal good damage. You'll always be able to attack in time, even after they have begun their swing.

I think the Adjudicator is the easiest boss too, if you don't count the various ways of cheesing other bosses. If you keep slightly to his left, right behind his leg, he'll never hit you, and you can step out and stab his weak spot, and back in when he announces his attack.

Since you never get hit, you can use various damage enhancing gear that is otherwise risky. In a NG+++(+?) it only took two hits to his weak point to bring him down, and he never got back up. No other boss was quite that fast to kill.
