Anybody know if Enchant Weapon scales at all? Based on what stat? Also, can it only be used on regular weapons? I could cast it on my Long Sword +6, but I couldn't cast it on my Dragon Long Sword + 5.

Having seen some more reviews and such, this game really seems right up my alley. I like the idea of loot and building a character that really fits/works, but in general most dungeon crawlers end up more like Diablo -- "click click click click click" where you're just moving around and essentially doing the same thing. Which I find boring, because it makes the game feel like it's just a matter of time until you get whatever it is you're looking for.
In Demon's Souls, it seems like it's based much more on learning and playing effectively, with some parts going well and others requiring a little brute force and others some cheeze (i mean, "thinking outside the box").
Instead of reading 70+ pages, how does the game handle new games, or NG+, or ramping difficulty? I assume that there's no way I could just grind for a few days and then breeze through the game, even if I do become relatively powerful?
Not really. It can get noticeably easier - this is definitely a game where if something's too difficult you go and level up somewhere else - but you don't exactly automatically waltz past anything without learning what you should be doing first.

<AtlusParker> Sorry I'm playing Pokemon and vomiting at the same time so I'm not following the conversation in a linear fashion.
Yeah, it's less about your level or stats and more about knowing what to do in a given situation.
For example, I beat the duel katana knight in...3-1 or 4-1 (I forget which) easily on my first try with a little bit of common sense and luck, but got owned by him later on when I was several levels higher because I was cocky.
Bought it this morning. I'd been debating on picking it based on hearing how often you die, but decided to take the plunge based on the unique online aspects of the game; sounds fun.
I've been avoiding spoilerish things. Games like this tend to be way more awesome if you don't know what to expect around the next corner. I'm currently venturing into 3-1 (1-1,1-2, 2-1 down), and I can not for the life of me figure out where to go. Any of the vets mind lending a hand?
Spoiler for some early 3-1 details.
Got some keys (3Fcell/floor and 4Fcell/floor IIRC), and I found this guy Freke in a cell. I can't let him out, and I can't find anywhere else to head from there. There's a hole just after the cell that looks like I should be able to fall to the level below, but I always miss and die. Do I just suck at falling in holes? Is there something I'm missing?
Spoilered response for anyone who wants to figure it out on their own:
Backtrack to where you emerged from the Archstone. You should have a key that let's you access a door in the wall on the walkway you're standing on that will lead you to the next section of the Prison. It's not one of the cells along the walkway, but a door directly in front of you as you're traversing it. If you're just emerging from the Archstone and leaving the cell you're standing in, turn right and it should be not even 5 steps ahead.
3-1 spoiler
They were real bastards with a trick they use in this one. About half way through the level there are 2 hidden staircases that are preaty easy to miss. When you come to a landing at the end of a staircase look around yourself very carefuly.

This should be it; Explanation in spoiler
El Fantastico: While I appreciate the help, I thought about it a little more when Malechai answered. In order to even get to Freke, you have to have the keys, and have gone through the door that you are talking about to get to the level above.
Have to admit, I wasn't looking around the endcap staircases very carefully. I mean, sure, while I was going up them, I was looking for traps. Beyond that, I just wasn't paying enough attention. Thanks.
So feeling better about this game this morning. I missed the first shortcut (which was my major anger last night, dying to that blue eyed fuck with the spear and then taking 20 minutes to walk back to him -- and then I got creative and lost 6000 souls for my trouble) and both rings in 1-1, but now have them both and, well, yeah.
So what do I do after beating 1-1's boss? Head into 1-2? Try 2-1 or even 3-1 or 4-1? I'm rather interested in finding a better weapon and armor...
Oh, btw, I am playing as a Soldier. Blame Sam Vimes. I have 10 faith and magic, though, so should be interesting.
In theory there's a winged spear and purple shield I should be finding someplace?

Conquering 2-1 can be difficult unless you have magic. If you're melee-based I would say go to 1-2.
There certainly are some treasures in 1-1 that you can go back and get fairly easily after killing the Phalanx. If you remember a somewhat grassy ridge being bombarded by dragons your first time around, it should now be safe to head up there and collect the loot that was previously difficult to reach.
I might just be blowing smoke here, but I remember it taking less time to get there from the beginning of the stage by taking the shortcut to the left.
So, I started my first character as a Knight, and I've already dropped a bunch of gear and used souls that I (unknowingly) should have kept. Thinking it might be high time to start over as a Thief, my number two choice. This time around those 33 Soul Levels shouldn't take nearly as much time.
I know that I could just hold off for New Game+, but I don't think I want to wait that long to get some things that shouldn't have been difficult to earn.

1-2 isn't all that different from 1-1. 2-1 magic or a piercing weapon makes your life a lot easier.
Is there more then one Winged Spear in the game? I enchanted mine to +3 but then I realized that I should probably have started down the Sharp path instead (since I'm planning to have super high dexterity). The Wiki says that the Winged Spear drops from the lancer in 1-1 but I haven't seen it.
I guess I could go with the Fatal effect since the starting point is the +3 Winged Spear. Any thoughts on what is best?

So how can you tell which "server" you're on? Just drop a note and see if someone you're trying to co-op with can see it? I'd love to co-op the Maneater fight, but of course I'd prefer to play it with some of you fine folk.

Any weapon in the game can be "upgrade" to a base weapon; I think that's how that works. When I take a weapon to the shopkeep, there is the option of "upgrading" to the base weapon that you start out with, so you can always "go back".
You can degrade a weapon to the base, yes, but you don't get back what you used to upgrade it and you do need an item ('meltstone') to do it. Keep that in mind.

1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 4-1 and 5-1 down with my Royal. Okay. Slow progress, but progress all the same. I'm pretty sure I got further in this amount of time with my Temple Knight, but hey.

Anyone up for some Chimera slaying this evening?
You can play with anyone else who has a US copy of the game. You're all using the same server(s). You just have to find some way of arranging a place to drop your blue stone so the other player can pick it up before anyone else does.

I definitely have two, but I don't know where I got them. Maybe it's just a low chance to drop off the lance guy in 1-1 and I got lucky.
Sorry, it's a red eyed demon, not blue. I think you guys know which one I'm talking about. How do you kill him?
Early on, you'll want to either leave him alone, or use some ranged attacks to whittle his HP down to a reasonable level. Spoiler...
You won't be able to get into the door he is guarding yet, and if by chance you can, the enemy behind the door is supposedly much harder than the guard.
So I see a lot of stuff about multiplayer, and planned on picking this up, but how does multiplayer work? Can you play with friends? I tried to visit the wiki page, but I'm trapped at work for the time being, so can't access (most) fun sites. I've heard you cannot join friends games, and your co-op players are random.
And I tried digging through a few pages here, but unable to locate too much info
So my internet is sort of flakey at my apartments, how will Demon's Souls treat me? I'm pretty content with just going solo on most of it, but is the lag going to affect my solo game because of all of the neato subtle multi-player tie-ins(the blood stains and warnings and all of that)? Basically I'm just confused.

In order to play with friends, you have to communicate outside of the game to arrange a location to accomplish this.
First, one of you needs to be in body form (alive,) and the other in soul form (dead.) The soul form player(s) drop their blue stone on the ground, which soon thereafter appears in your game. You interact with the stone to bring them into your environment as blue knights.
At this point, they are in your game environment. They can assist you in fighting the bosses that remain, clearing stages, and I believe they can collect loot (for better or worse, not sure of the details on this.)
If they assist you in defeating a boss, they regain body form, as do you. If they die, or you die, they get sent back to their world and keep the souls collected. You then rate each other.

Co-op play works by someone in soul form dropping a sign on the ground that other players (in body form) can see, and if they accept the sign, the first player appears in their game as a blue phantom, to help them out. In theory, it's random -- if you want to play co-op, you drop your sign and you don't know who will pick it up. In practice, you can coordinate this with a friend, agreeing beforehand to have him drop his sign in an out of the way place, and then you pick up the sign as soon as he drops it. I've done this pretty reliably in order to co-op with friends.
But note 2 things -- (1) there is no voice chat; and (2) You can only have co-op players join you in a level where you haven't yet beaten a boss (the co-op player himself can already have beaten the boss, or not -- it doesn't matter). So you can't just play through the whole game co-op with a friend (like Halo 3 or Too Human) -- you can only do levels where one of you hasn't beaten the boss.

I wouldn't think you'll have a lag problem if you're just getting messages and seeing the ghosts of other players -- that probably doesn't use much bandwith. co-op play might be laggy. But if by flaky you mean your internet connection drops out and you get disconnected from the PSN, that might actually pose a problem. The game can be played in online and offline mode (depending on whether you're logged into the PSN), and I think it might be the case that if you're logged in and playing, and then get suddenly disconnected, you get kicked back to the main menu, losing your progress. Maybe someone else can confirm that.

That sounds like a lot more work than it should be...I've had a few friends that have picked it up, but haven't heard from them yet as of yet. It does sound like a good buy though...rather unfortunate that it's not as easy to play. Might as well have done the Konami System...

Who does it drop from? The red eyed knight?
I don't really remember. He can drop it, but I think he's not the only one, but he might have a higher drop rate.
Getting a bit frustrated with my soldier. Is anyone else not playing Royal?
I'm playing as a Wanderer and it's worked out quite well for me. Haven't rerolled or anything, still on my first profile. He just strong enough and agile enough to move around effectively (with the right equipment) and I only had to level my magic skill up once to get it to 10 so I could learn Fire Spew or whatever it's called. Basically he is pretty badass all around.
Trust us veterans when we say that co-op would be a lot less fun if it was fully featured with voice chat, party system, friends list et al. Gameplay-wise you don't really need to co-ordinate, anyway - certainly not on an ArmA II level or any such thing.
I had a Temple Knight first time through and did fine. The only times I had to co-op or die were Flamelurker (didn't have enough magic damage) and the final boss (sizeable spoiler) -
because I was terrified of losing too many more levels to him.
Other than that, no problem. Right now as a Royal I really, really miss my gigantic health bar, armour and blessed bastard sword, let me tell you. Getting the hang of it but for PvE melee beats magic nine out of every ten times for me.

3-2 is fairly dark and has plenty out-of-the-way places to place a blue stones, so it should be fairly easy to coordinate a co-op entry point. Anyone else interested in co-op tonight? (I'm at like Soul Level 33-34). I have no problem switching from Soul to Body to Soul form again, as I'm pretty much drowning in ephemeral stones right now. So if anyone needs help in another area, I'd gladly kill myself after 3-2 to join your game

I'm not sure about the scaling, but I doubt it.
I think possibly even if you just scratch them they'll then do nothing but chase you when you get near them.
And yes, that does mean you've lost their services for the rest of that game. Fun, eh?
