A friend and I are gonna play us some Diablo 2. Every other time I always play a Sorceress or something else fragile, so I have the urge to play a "tank", something that can wade into a mass of enemies and come out alive. What kinda build should I do? Some sort of Paladin, right?

Ribcracker is a pretty special case though, since it's a pretty speedy weapon with an enormous amount of crushing blow, a large amount of bonus damage, some Dex (which is great), and some FHR on top. It's great for Druids because the 50% IAS on the weapon is fantastic, since only a weapon's IAS applies to shapeshifts. It's one of the few weapons I'd probably upgrade.

Also, Elite Uniques don't have a unique for each base weapon type, unlike Normal and Exceptional. If you want to switch out a Ribcracker for something better, you generally go with a Mace-type weapon with IAS; Windhammer, the IK Maul, and a 3x Shael'd Aldur's are the usual suspects, and Windhammer and the IK maul require an enormous amount of Strength (225 - an upped Ribcracker needs only 63), while Aldur's mace does fairly lowish damage.

I wouldn't say a regular Ribcracker isn't great. Sure it's outshined by an up'd Ribby, but for a Fury druid it still has everything you need. It's fast and has a lot of crushing blow, which in the end is more important than damage.

No, no. The reason why everyone upgrades the Ribby is because Quarterstaffs (exceptional Long Staff) have just 17 average damage. On the other hand, Stalagmites (elite Long Staff) have 91 average damage. Blizzard forgot to balance elite staves for the expansion! Add in a perfect Ribby's 300% ED, and this is an upgrade that is far too good to miss, even with the loss of 10 ias with the upgrade.

I created a game. Another guy joined me. We did part of a quest together. My quest log was updated when I logged off. I quit playing, and when I came back later I had to start the quest from the beginning.

I'm confused why it didn't save my quest progress.

Which quest was it? Quests logs can update, but for most quests, progress isn't saved until you've actually finished the quest itself (exceptions are those quests where you collect items, like Act II's staff and amulet). Take for example... the Den of Evil. The log will update when there are five monsters left, then four, then three... but if you exit then, when you start a new game you'll have to clear the entire Den again.

I got back into this game after finding the wonders that Battle.net can do when you only have the CD Keys of games long gone. I started a character at ESCL barb, just to see how cool it would be playing with other PA'ers.

If I am correct if I do not find a game under panr1/wang I can just make it right? Also those people who play on the E Server's name are their account names right? And if you /f add their names it would work yes?

Anyway I am excited to play and hope to game with any of you. I really want to beat this game atleast once.

do fury druid need high strength or just enough to use equipment? i plan on making a fury druid, and i think the highest strength i'll need is like 70 or something so i'm not sure if i can just pump all the rest into vitality. another question, is max feral rage any good? and is it worth it to get a bear or something. thanks!

Only 1% ED per point of strength. But total ED from other sources can easily reach over 1000, meaning even five hundred points of strength will add just less than 1/3 to your total damage. Much better to put those points in vitality. You can't punch demons if you're dead!

It is all about where you get the most bang for your buck. Putting excessive amounts of points in strength is not insane, but almost all serious players would agree that it will make your character weaker overall.

Of course, that ain't so important if you are playing softcore.

Yeah, you can find softcore builds where a fuckton of strength would be fine. You could get plenty of life on a barb to make a full on strength build work just fine in SC.

As a rule of thumb, though, it goes str = enough for gear, dex = enough for gear/max block, energy = nothing, vit = everythinge else.

Of course, you can find people doing energy/energy shield sorcs, and heavy dex investment amazons. You could toss various strength builds into that category too.

Well i was doing a few runs to break up the monotony of studying for a test later in the day. I've been pulling an all nighter so you tend to need 10 min here and there to keep focused.

Anyway, i ran Countess and got a Thul and a ral.. big whoop right? Nightmare can't expect to much. My character levels by the end of it. Level 49 whoop! anyway i like to pair these up with Trav runs because.. why not? I've done a few earlier tonight. Usually when i do them i don't even have any rejuv's on my belt this time i had a full stack of those suckers.

Well i find myself up against the first Council member after taking down a pack of Zealots and Vampire guys. Throwing Blizzard on me and Hitting me with Meteor.. which i was basically laughing at i had a ravenfrost and a Fire Res of 85. Although i didn't come through it all without using a few pots.

Anyway as i make my way to the first council member he runs right down to me, i retreat to one of my grim ward's so the other normal ones will stay back. I start throwing my big ass throwing weapons which do.. well decent damage. think max of 800 but i throw fast so it's no biggy. Then i start reading what's under his name and i notice Extra Strong Fire Enchanted and Lightning Enchanted.

    And i died.

Didn't take him down even 1/5 of health the charged bolt took me down, apparently roughly around when my merc made it to him. I was about to back off, i was about to pull up from the mouse pop a rejuv and high tail it out of there.. And the worst part is he didn't even kill me from dying himself.. He's still running around.

It was a solo game so all the gear is lost *sigh* and i'm stuck back in normal again.. gonna have to start over again after all the help Idolninja and threadbaresock gave me :/ with some help from various other PA'rs as well >_>

sorry for letting you down guys.. i was really happy with this one. thought he'd make it to hell. I'll just have a moment of silence with my Flogging Molly.. as i try to think up a name for my next one.

Anyone know any good Barb builds? I keep on putting my talents on the passive tree.

And does anyone wanna help me do A1Q3 on ESCL later tonight?

I also have another question. Is it possible to do a Lan with just one CD key on three computers?

It was the Deckard Cain quest in Act I. We had gotten the Scroll and turned it in, and the next step was to activate the Cairn Stones. That's when I logged off, and I had to get the Scroll again.

It makes sense I guess, because the other guy picked up the Scroll. I only saw the update in my quest log.

Are there more people playing SC or HC? I haven't seen many people yet (though I'm so low level, I've been keeping to myself, rather than weighing anyone else down), but I'd like to play with others eventually. Where is one more likely to find active players?

The Hardcore crew typically seemed more active and the inherant dangers/desire to retrieve gear in the event of the worst case scenario seemed to propel more active grouping than Softcore, but lately with the impending patch and/or ladder reset, both seem to be pretty dead. I know I haven't been on much lately, but that's mostly due to a new relationship and an unfortunate relapse of my Master of Orion 2 addiction.

I imagine there'll be a flurry of interest and activity from both groups once the reset and/or patch hits.

Yes, though I'm sure we'll have people in Nightmare and Hell in no time flat. (that is to say, they won't be level 1 for long)

All of the current Ladder characters are moved to Non-Ladder, and you either start over or accept your new non-ladder status.

Luckily i stashed away the berserker armour so the next Thrower won't be to Painful.

I usually just remake with the same name but i'm leaving Cremator all ghosty in my character selection screen as a reminder to not be stupid. err be more paranoid i guess.

I'm kind of bored with my summoning necro already. I was following a fishymancer build I found linked here (I'm level 14 for what it's worth) but it's really not very involved. The minions do all the work really.

I'm thinking of starting over (don't hurt me cookies). I liked the caster in Diablo I, so I was looking at sorceror here. Basically I need anything that's not super gear dependent, because the whole of my D2 experience consists of completing Act I. I know fuck all about gear in this game.

haha, well the necro is definitely the least gear dependent. the sorceress isn't too bad i guess...definitely don't go with melee classes cuz those are really dependent on gear. you should've told me sooner! i gave away some of my low level sorceress stuff to random people cuz it was takin up space :(. i did give timmy, aka the doctor on forums, my razorswitch. once he finds a better weapon or levels up enough to use better gear, i can throw it your way.

Just a thought right now. It took me a while to beat Act I so I'm reluctant to start over, but I could probably sit down and blow through it in an afternoon actually.

    yup, fun stuff!

quick question, for synergies to power up my fireball, both meteor and firebolt add damage. right now i have something like 15 in firebolt and haven't touched the meteor side of my skill tree. if i spend 4 skill points to get 1 point in meteor, i'll actually have around a level 10 meteor because of my items. the damage added to my fireball would be a lvl10 meteor not a lvl1 right? basically i'm saying i'd get a lot more damage out of my fireball if i put 4 skill points for a lvl1 meteor than 4 more points into firebolt. am i correct in my assumption?
