I only see two people listed for USWest on the front page. If there are more out there, it'd be fun to play together, per the entire purpose of the thread. I have yet to see *bartholamue online, but that might be due to timing issues.

I don't play anymore Pale, but I only went East because that's where everyone else was. If we can get a significant amount of interest I'd be willing to start playing West again.

I've had less than no luck scrounging monster level appropriate hell dungeons for a monarch. I've lost about 600k gold in merc ressing and death costs, but I have gained another level and a half. I guess I should do Meph/Baal runs on NM to get better equipment first but this is really starting to bug me.

Yeah I daresay the OP is way out of date. It would be hard to keep it updated anyway since people are always picking this game up and dropping it again at random times.
Squid I can't remember what the ping is like in number-terms, I haven't checked since I've come back to the game. Hell, have I ever checked? I think I have only check frames per second, and not ping. Hmm. Anyway, the lag is such that if you spam an attack at a monster, the monster will die and your last attack will fly over his corpse. Hence why I don't play melee, as I mentioned before. But anyway try it for yourself and see what you think.
As for the difference for East to West, I would imagine it's negligible in this age of broadband. I remember I used to have problems playing over dialup, some 8 years ago, so I stuck to the single player game.
I played some last night (the lag started to clear up) and made it to level 12 on my necro. I just make the panr1 game (on US east, softcore, ladder) if no one else is there. Would be really great to have someone else join me! I know you all are saying there's a ladder reset soon, but so what! let's plaaaay.
I also want to thank the Pauper guy (Respectable, distinguished, something like that, sorry I forgot!) who joined the game and really helped me out with some advice and items! Much appreciated man.

I'm generally around anywhere from 3pm - 6pm East Australian time... whatever that is in your timezone. I'm level ~30 at the moment but if you'd like I can rush you through some areas or buy you high level gear or something.
Necro, eh? I'll keep a lookout for necro items then.

EDIT: I have 2 items of a necro set.
That'd be great, thanks!
I'll warn you, I am not as hardcore as most people here seem to be. I have no idea how to min/max my necro or anything like that. I'm going summoning heavy so far, but I would prefer for example to use bone spear or spirit over corpse explosion, even though I understand that is not wise. I think it comes down to, will things still die? I don't mind if I don't do it the most efficient way, I just think the bone spells are cooler. :?

So I started reading this thread and decided to get back into some D2 after a few years of absence. I think I am going to play an assassin, since I never played one before. Any suggested builds? I saw the kick one in the OP which seems interesting, but I'm open to other possibilities.
Also, my PC is running Vista, is there anything I need to know about before installing or playing to make it run well?
Vista and Windows 7's Aero freaks out with Diablo II and some graphics drivers - if you see a black rectangle on the top right corner displaying a series of characters for about twenty minutes when starting Diablo II, that's the conflict. Just disable Desktop Composition for Diablo II.
More generally, a Glide wrapper makes Diablo II look better. Google for them.

1) For gods sake, don't sign your posts. We have signatures if you really want to do that.
2) It's the Sanders set, its not specifically necro other than the fact that it has a bone wand in there.
3) Really, just go for a cookie cutter build. You can dig one up in the OP of this thread or someone will post something eventually. I'm not particularly pro myself. That being said, the builds are generally for late Nightmare and Hell difficulty, so scrounge whatever gear you can until then.

If you're wanting to be more active as a summonmancer, go with bone spear. Don't get attached to the idea that you're the one doing the killed though; your bone spear will penetrate through enemies, which will allow your army to clean up. That's pretty much how summoners work in this game.
I just scavenged some gear from other characters and re-equipped my summoner druid. Level 46 grizzly buffed by a level 46 Heart of Wolverine, a might merc with a Pride and a Beast on the druid.
Good times, though I'm not sure how well all that stuff stacks, or even if it all does stack.
I could get the bear to 49 probably, but I'm not sure it would matter much.

yeah, there are many +3 to all skills on an item with an additional +3 to <specific skill> all over the place.
With lots of those, you can get ridiculously high skill levels. Really, 27-28 for most main skills is enough. 46... That's just overkill.
Also: Croyd, just play through normal. It doesn't require much skill. Get a feel for the game. You will have to end up making another character and focusing your skills and attacks a bit, but let your first run through be an experience of D2. I don't think any of us remember what D2 was like fresh.
That said, I am the poorest man on the realms. Just saying.
Yeah, it can go quite high. I'm fairly happy at 46, but I could add 3 more easily by transfering an arachnid mesh, a heart of the oak and wearing a a generic +3 summon helmet instead of a Jalal's.
The dream item is a +2 skills, +3 grizzly pelt for prebuffing, but I haven't been able to find/trade one.
+9 to any tree from 9 skiller grand charms
+3 to class skills from torch
+1 to all from annihilus
+1 from belt (arachnid's mesh)
+2 from armor (typically enigma)
+2/+3 from amulet, class/tree respectively edit, thanks Grislo: +2 from two rings, Stone of Jordan or Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band
+1 from Call to Arms on switch
That's +21/+22. After that:
+2+3=+5 rare anything with +2 class skills and +3 tree skills. Some classes can have multiple of these, e.g. paladin scepters and paladin shields and circlets can each have +5 total to some tree, giving +15 total. Getting such rares will be insanely difficult, of course.
+1-3 in up to three random skills from class-specific items. Note that this stacks with the previous bonus, e.g., a rare necromancer wand with +3 to Raise Skeleton, +3 to Summoning tree skills, and another +2 to all necromancer skills. Necromancer heads also roll with such bonuses. So in theory a necromancer could get +21 to some skill from a rare wand, rare head, and rare circlet, on top of +21/+22 from whatever. This would be even more insanely difficult to achieve than the previous. It's where all the theoretical level 63 Raise Skeleton/Raise Skeletal Mage/Skeleton Mastery ideas come from, though.
For particular skills there are occasionally glove and boot slot bonuses, but these can be specific. Off the top of my head: Magefist (+1 all fire skills), Trang-Oul's set gloves (+2 all curses), Marrowwalks (+2 Skeleton Mastery)
Level 49 grizzlies are almost reasonable, really. That's "just" +29 prebuffed.
Yeah, it's not terribly bad on a summoner type build. Slightly easier/cheaper to get high numbers on a necro, but very manageable on a druid too.
I'm wearing a +3 amulet, a Jalal's (mostly cause I had a cham'd one), 2 x soj, torch, annihilus, heart of the oak (did end up transfering one), a spirit shield and a chains of honor. Add 9 skill charms for buffing, then back in the stash.
I switch to a beast/ber'd stormshield after buffing, and the belt is a Thundergods. Boots are IK, for lack of anything better on my mules. They're good for the build, though.
I have an arachnid and a generic +3 helmet somewhere, but I'm not sure where they've gotten to.
No, seriously. I recently traded a CtA 1 for an ist and I can only get it to like lvl. 4 tops, which is just a little over a minute. Ugh. I really don't feel like getting a shako, hoto, chains of honor, arachid, mara and 2 sojs, not to mention an anni, just to boost BO. The other solution would be to craft one myself and hope it's 5-6. I already have the necessary runes (found a mal woo!) and a 5os flail. The only problem is if it's x/1/x I am going to kill myself (character, not me).
Poking through the Arreat Summit, there are some highly curious uniques. It's probably a good thing Ravens don't do much, or a +7 to Raven bonus on a unique druid helm would probably be gamebreaking.
I don't think any of us remember what D2 was like fresh.
I have vague recollections.
"I don't like how Act 2 looks. I'm going to start a new character so I can keep playing in Act 1 where the grass is green."
"My barb keeps dying. I better get a few more levels so I can put more points into strength and do more damage."
Oh, and then LoD came out with its expanded stash, that was so nice.
I remember when Diablo 2 came out and my friends and I went to our pal's net cafe and just lanned that bitch for 72 hours. I even remember my first character, I'd wanted an Amazon, but my friend took that, so I went with a necro. We ran a maul barb, my zookeeper necro, and his bowazon through the whole game without any trouble, till we hit Diablo.
Let me tell you, zookeeper necroes sucked balls back then for killing, and I was under 30 so I didn't even have revives. A mace barb with nothing but leap attack wasn't cutting it, and zons still had the bow bug AND the DEA bug. It took us 2 and a half hours to kill Diablo, and he didn't drop shit.
Those were some good times. We're going to do the same thing when Diablo 3 gets released.
Also, I've been playing the Battle for Elements mod over the last week or so. It's actually pretty good, and one of the few mods that's seen recent support. The only problem with it is that info is lacking, but most things are easy to figure out. Gold is also very valuable, which is nice.

I had played the first a fair bit, and had really high hopes. Then I played the beta, where you could run around some of act1 with a barb, and it didn't impress at all. It didn't have the charm and style of the first.
Of course, as it turned out, it was a rather good game after all.
