It looks like Team Fortress 2. But its going to be badass. I know it. I mean holy shit chainsaws. I cant wait for that. And for people getting pissed. I dont see why they dont do this. Instead of just updating maps, give us different people with different stories. Bam. Whole new stuff. Makes sense to me instead of just new maps with the same old people.
Yeah, that's fine, but nothing that can't be done with inexpensive DLC. Not (what we can presume) is a boxed sequel
Why do I feel like I'm the only one annoyed by this.
Didn't the game JUST come out...by valve standards.
What video?
You're not alone.
I don't get this - the pc fraction is used to contentshoveling valve-side á la TF2, L4D-2 a year after L4D feels strange.
This. If it's another full price title just a year after the release of the first one then I've got no idea what to think anymore. I honestly never expected this at all.
As Nailbunny pointed out, not really a Valve move - I expected maybe low-priced (if not free) DLC for PC, maybe all that shit on a disc for consoles in stores, but the way it seems now...I dunno.
If it's four new maps, with new characters, with new gameplay, boss zombies, weapons, etc, I can see spending $40-$50 on it (especially if all the maps are enabled for Versus right at the start) since that is what I gladly paid for L4D the first time.
What I think Valve did was instead of adding new campaigns with the characters we already know, the gameplay we already know, etc, they decided to go full-tilt and just give us four new characters, in a different locale, with varied (hopefully) gameplay.
The BIG ISSUE for me isn't the price but cross-compatibility. If I'm in the Armadeaddon Chat, and someone wants to do Dead Air, and after that game we want to do L4D2 Campaign 1, I don't want to have to exit L4D1, launch L4D2 and reconvene. I want to be able to launch campaigns from either game with the same browser/matchmaking system.

You'd shell out 50$ for four new maps, characters (that don't even make a fricking difference gameplay-wise, at least not in l4d) and new weapons ?
Seriously ?
June 1, 2009 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2), the sequel to the best-selling and critically-acclaimed co-operative multiplayer thriller.
Coming exclusively to Xbox 360 and PC, L4D2 promises to set a new benchmark for co-operative action games and become one of 2009's marquee titles.
"A large part of how Left 4 Dead became 2008's top-selling new IP on Xbox 360 and the PC was the custom-tailored gameplay made possible by the AI Director," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "With the knowledge gained from creating the original, new technology, and a passionate team, L4D2 will set a new benchmark for cooperative action games."
Set for release on November 17, the title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaw, frying pan, axe, baseball bat, and more.
Introducing the AI Director 2.0, L4D's dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players' performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.
Featuring new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original with more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, and maps for Survival mode available at launch.
Supported by a $10+ million marketing campaign, Left 4 Dead has sold over 2.5 million retail copies since it was released in November of 2008. Left 4 Dead 2 is targeted for release on Xbox 360 and the PC on November 17, 2009, and will be launched worldwide with a multi-million dollar marketing campaign across TV, Outdoor, and Online.
"Left 4 Dead was backed by our most aggressive advertising campaign to date, and resulted in a top 5 showing on two platforms during holiday 2008," said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. "Left 4 Dead 2 is a larger game and will be supported with even more consumer and retail advertising programs than the original."
Left 4 Dead 2 will be featured as the cover story on PC Gamer and Official Xbox Magazines this month. For more information, please visit www.l4d.com

Didn't I already shell out $50 for 4 characters, 4 maps and, what, six weapons? I've played many, many hours of L4D.
Hell yeah characters make a lot of difference. I find Zoey, Bill, Francis and Louis all charming, entertaining people.

I want to be able to launch campaigns from either game with the same browser/matchmaking system.
I seriously hope its not the same flawed matchmaking/browser we are using now.
Well, of course. But I don't want the two games split in terms of launching, you know? Whatever system they implement, I hope it's the same system for both.
The axe can’t go unexplained either. It’s utterly brutal, and shows off the Infected’s newly regioned vulnerability. Swing it low and you can slice off a zombie’s legs, letting them collapse horribly to the ground, bleeding out of their fresh stumps
More gore
Chargers
Wandering Witches
Axe, Chainsaw, Baseball Bat
Guantlet moments.
New Characters,New Locations, New Zombies, New weapons, New twists, Improved Director
5 New Campaigns set in Southern United States
Four New Characters
* Coach, High School Football Coach
* Rochelle, News Reporter
* Ellis, Mechanic
* Nick, Gambler and Conman
Campaigns linked noticeable to one another, stronger narrative
Beyond the new cast, nothing else from L4D is being replaced, but rather added to or expanded upon.
The Special Infected we’re already familiar with will appear, joined by a new collection
Of these only one has been revealed so far, The Charger the beast has one giant mutated arm, which he uses to shoulder-charge the Survivors. He knocks you down, but doesn’t incapacitate you. Rather you’re off balance for a momentHcapable of taking out many of you in a single charge, sending us flying like bowling pins. However, should he charge someone on their own, rather than running to hide after, instead he might pick you up with his giant arm and repeatedly smash you face-first into the ground until a teammate comes to rescue you.
Rather cutely, some of the Common Infected have been changed while in hazmat suits. This means laying down walls of Molotov cocktail fire won’t keep everyone away any more
But perhaps most exciting is the Wandering Witch. And it seems in the daytime, the Witch has a bit more pep
Of the new weapons, perhaps the most exciting reveal are the melee tools. So far we’ve seen the axe and the frying pan. There’s also a baseball bat, which didn’t appear in the campaign we saw, which we assume will be a little less bonky than TF2’s Scout’s. And the chainsaw. The axe can’t go unexplained either. It’s utterly brutal
There’s a new shotgun, a new semi-automatic, and a brand new sniper rifle
Now some of the Panic events you start can only be stopped by reaching a further target. This prevents camping
As Valve explained to us, if the Director gives you a pretty straight route right through it, it’s an insult to how poorly you’ve been playing
The Director is, we’re told, going to be far smarter this time about placing items, and the selection of these has expanded as well. Which includes the incendiary ammo.
Another very smart change is to prevent sneaky players from trying to sit out the triggered events. In those moments in L4D where you had to press a button that began a frantic attack until an elevator arrived, or a door opened, it seems too many were crouching in a corner together and waiting for it to all die down. L4D2 has plans to prevent such treachery. Now some of the events you start can only be stopped by reaching a further target
Oh hey it's the panic event fix I posted ages ago.

I wonder if this means no DLC for L4D1. I remember buying it with the expectation of continued support following release.
Admittedly there have been a lot of updates tweaking gameplay, but I don't really count "enabling two pre-existing campaigns for versus" as a real DLC expansion.

Well there is survival mode as well. But yeah, I think most people were expecting it to be like TF2 again where they'd be updating for a while.
It's not like I'm not interested in the game or anything, but at full price and just one year after the release of the first game, I think I'm going to hold off buying for the moment, at least until there's a sale.
Guys how much playtime have we all got out of l4d? Me, like 100x more than any other game, more of the same is fine by me
These things need to be looked at relatively, people pay full price for a 10 hour single player fps game then never touch it again and wait for the sequel, id wage most people especially in this thread have played l4d for surpassing 100 hours
I dont care if I have to pay another $50 for L4D 2. I have paid that much for games I spent less than 1/4 of the time I have played L4D. If it was JUST new maps and survivors.. I would be pissed.
But sweet melee weapons, way better director, etc, sounds awesome.
The only issue (like a previous person said) would be wanting to play No mercy when in L4D2. I hope don't need to quit and start L4D1
While, yes this sounds liek it should be more of an expansion, it will still be a day 1 purchase

agreed with this. I won't have a problem shelling out money for this.

and again, nothing there about it being a boxed sequel or mid-priced DLC
It would be so dumb to not integrate the two games
I bet that will be their big reveal for it, because besides the AI director 2.0, there doesn't seem to be too much exciting new stuff
Well, of course. But I don't want the two games split in terms of launching, you know? Whatever system they implement, I hope it's the same system for both.

I still only have 4 campaigns, and here comes left 4 dead 2?

Heck, you must not visit the TF2 thread at all.

And someone had better figure out a way to put the current survivors in as skins for the new ones or something.

I thought L4D actually released on time didn't it?

I actually have no idea.
I was just hoping I would get a chance to play the game while there was still a community for it.
These things need to be looked at relatively, people pay full price for a 10 hour single player fps game then never touch it again and wait for the sequel, id wage most people especially in this thread have played l4d for surpassing 100 hours
I know what you mean. This is pretty surprising in that it'll fragment the community quite hard between the two games
But sweet melee weapons, way better director, etc, sounds awesome.
