Staying in or near New York City for cheap

So, my girlfriend wants to see a concert in New York in two weeks, and we're trying to find a way to do this without spending a ton of money since we're both poor college students. I'm thinking we'll drive there (from Ohio) and try and find a hotel or something just outside of the city, as I think that'd be cheaper than trying to find one in it. Any suggestions?

I had luck with www.couchsurfing.com in NYC. Thing is, I was there to perform in the city, I was only one guy, and most people like to host tourists more than just passer throughs.
But it is free (you can pay the very small donation fee to look better on the site).

You can also stay in anytown the train runs to in Connecticut and just take that.

If you're willing to take at train into the city to get to the concert, you'll probably get much cheaper hotel rates staying somewhere near a NJTransit (new jersey) or LIRR (long island) station... I don't have a easy idea of how to search for that, though

Find something in Jersey City. It's cheaper than NYC, but just on the other side of the Hudson (ie. as far from Manhattan as any outer borough). There's a train called the PATH that will take you to several locations in the city for $1.50 (as a comparison, subway is $2), the area is pretty nice, and it's only 5 - 15 minutes to Manhattan.

You coulld always get a hotel in Stamford, CT for about 50$ at the Marriot or Hilton via priceline then drive/take the train into Manhattan. It's about a 30/40 minute commute, Stamford being the first stop from Grand Central on the New haven line. Round trip train tickets run about $18. Might be more frugal than staying inside the city.
