So, do you need to fill up the four slots at the transmuter before it will work?
Like, do you need four gems of the same type to transmute to the next higher tier?
Two gems of the same quality yields a gem one level up, and four gems of the same quality creates one two levels up. Unfortunately, you can't combine different levels of gems, even if they technically will all be transmuted in sequence (in other words, putting in two Dulls, one Discolored, and one regular gem should transmute into a Cut gem, but it won't work that way, even though all of those can be combined to form a Cut gem).
Three rings can be transmuted into one new ring; same story for three necklaces.
You can transmute four enchanted/rare items to get either a Dull or Cracked gem of some random type, and four uniques will get you a regular gem of some random type.
Finally, three potions of the same type will get you one of the next higher type. Unfortunately, this also cannot be done quickly or easily - if you drop a stack of, say, 18 potions into the transmuter, you will get 15 back (and you now have to click on them again to transmute AGAIN), along with your 1 higher-level potion.
Bah what is up with the mod loading problems in this game? I've changed the respec mod so many times, fully restarted the game, made new characters, etc. But I can't change to the respec mod that also includes stat resets. I even fully uninstalled the respec mod and the stupid potion still shows up in the shop.
Edit: Bwahaha fixed it. Had to delete the entire mod folder to do so, but hey, whatever works. Hopefully they streamline the process a bit.

Thanks for the info! Shift + click is your friend when transmuting stuff.... it will move stuff from/to your inventory.
I'm planning on making a reflect + explosive vanquisher, do I need to worry about investing in a trap/pet skills to keep enemies away from me?
Tonight I retire my next character, gonna heirloom my super shoulders and try a destroyer as the next generation while I work on my other Alchy. I'm hoping to get my super shoulders to mega-insane status tonight. +39 Str atm
I gave Silence I to my dog but things always cast spells just the same. Do they not cast it, or do I need a higher level Silence to work (I'm level 17)?
Isn't Ember Phase better? Speaking of spells what would be a good combination for a pet? Are buffs even useful on a pet?
Higher levels of haste are actually faster than teleporting, with Haste VI you can run so fast you can barely see where you're going. Also it doesn't drain as much mana.
For my summoner I gave my pet Heal All VI and V and it's worked great.

it might depend on what your dog is set to do (attack or defend). Other people have not experienced this, but I know my dog just will NOT cast heal spells (ever) if he's on attack-mode, but on defense he spams them even when we're both just out for walkies.
I installed a couple mods and they deleted my Chemist's visible armor. It made me sad until I retired him and started a new one on hard. Oh well it's not like gear is hard to comeby in this game.
I know someone did a overhead health bar for enemies, I hope someone does some sort of HUD mod for minions. When I've got 8 dudes under my control, something like WoW's party interface would go a long way towards more efficient use of Heal All and knowing when my minions are dead or just lost.

Explosive shot will keep enemies away from you by killing them before they move. You'll be fine.
Explosive shot Vanqs are the quickest way to heirloom items. Takes me 2 days to run through the campaign quickly (with twinked gear) and bam, another heirloom chance.

I tried casting silence myself, and it didn't seem to stop enemies from casting spells, so I'm not really sure whether it works or not.

My dog casts silence when set on aggressive.
Though not often - perhaps the spell has a long-ass cooldown, the pet uses it before he actually gets within range of the mob(s), or a bit of both.

Yeah, if you don't go in and delete those adm and cmp files, the changes won't actually show up. This game is kind of weird with how it's mod path works. Once you figure the system out, it gets easier though.

Yep thanks guys, I'll do that tonight / whenever I add more mods.
It just seemed weird to me that a game getting hype for its modability has such a non-obvious implementation method.
Enjoying the game otherwise though.

I don't know if it's been said before in this massive thread, but haste is great for the backtracking, if you're willing to give up a spell slot.
Haste is great for everything.
It increases your attack speed and attack speed is life leech. If you run fast enough you can also basically ignore hits.
It stacks with other levels of Haste! That's right, you can have four level of Haste - VI, V, IV, and III - all on at the same time. You can run from the beginning to end of levels in fifteen seconds without getting hit.
I gave Silence I to my dog but things always cast spells just the same. Do they not cast it, or do I need a higher level Silence to work (I'm level 17)?
Change his mode to Aggressive, since Silence is an offensive spell.

I don't think pets really have much of a rhyme or reason to why they cast spells when they do. They just do it when they feel like it.

My pet basically heals me whenever it has the mana, no matter the amount of health it or I have.

The range is pretty small, are you close enough? IME the NPC spell casters do tend to hang back until they are next up for the blade.
It's apparently experimental right now, so use at your own risk, but it's still pretty impressive. You'll have to do a bit of fiddling apparently, instructions are in the link. Have a screenie:
There was another one from back before the editor was released, which was basically a graphical interface for the ini files, which also contained control re-mapping.
Might be worth looking for if the above doesn't work out. Only two mouse buttons in 2009 is criminal.

If it was good enough for Diablo, it's good enough for Torchlight.
So, it has recently come to my attention that this game is, in fact, awesome. And for the low price of 20$, I'm finding it hard to resist. Pretty much the only thing holding me back is that I have been playing toooons of Dragon Age, and don't really need another dungeon crawler. So, is this game different enough to warrant a purchase?

It's a fun little game, but definitely not perfection personified. I think its strengths lie in how easy it is to casually play for an hour, and its time tested, well worn game style. It also has good replayability, in my opinion, and is fairly easy to mod. It's also cheap as dirt and will run on just about anything. Pretty easy pickup as far as I'm concerned, but definitely just check out the demo first, as there a few things that may make or break the game the for you, meaning it's kind of obvious this was done on an accelerated design cycle.

If it was good enough for Diablo...
It wasn't.
Diablo came out in '97, right? Were there even multi button mouses back then?

The original Xerox design was for a 3 button mouse (for their 1981 system), but they dropped it to 2 for the actual product. Plenty of +3 buttoned mice afterwards. The 90s was when the middle button got swapped for a scroll wheel.

Just so everyone knows, if you use the coupon 5OFFTORCH at Direct2Drive, you can get Torchlight for FIFTEEN DOLLARS. So it's even cheaper now! Someone should either put this in the title or whatever.

2 gems of one quality transmute to 1 of a higher quality. this might change as you get into the flawless/perfect (or whatever it is) quality.
