I usually turn them off. I wish there was a way to only turn certain ones off instead of adjusting the total frequency (I'm looking at you, space bees!).
I used to turn random events off always, but lately I've had them on and it actually been a lot more fun. Especially large maps where I will have dozens of turns where my ships are just in transit, and nothing else going on.
I like the random encounters. They can be annoying, but just about all of them provide a net benefit if you deal with them well. The do add a little bit of complexity, so I can see why new players wouldn't use them. Still, I'd hate to give up the bonuses that go along with killing a VN mothership or an Alien Derelict. Asteroid monitors are also a nice thing to run into as well. The swarm is quite annoying, but its also pretty easy to deal with within the first 50 turns.
The things that seem to set it apart from other 4E games are the randomized tech tree, the Command & Control mechanics, and the very different playstyles between races. The rock/paper/scissors nature of ships and technologies is nice, too. There's no single strategy which will always win a game for you; you are kept guessing and on your toes from game start to game finish.
i appreciate the seesaw effect that the technology tends to cause in battle. one race will come out with a tech advantage, may take the upper hand, but if the other race responds cannilly, the tables can be turned strongly. In an even match, this exchange of power can repeat itself over and over, leading to truly awesome battles.
Good stuff, makes me think of some epic matches in Galactic Civilizations 1. GV2 didn't quite have that for some reason.. maybe it's because the enemies didn't talk to you as often or the tech tree sucked with the 3 types of weapons.
I would like to play but I won't be home at game start. I can probably join in later on in the evening if you're still going and you leave a slot open.
I can play:
- Friday night from about 9 pm onwards
- Saturday morning from about 9 am to noon
- Sunday most of the day except for a gap centered around lunch (noon to 2 pm or so)
I would like to play, but do not know when or if I will be available.

The tutorials may be decent... but the person doing the voice over is soo boring, I couldnt stand it for more than 1 or 2 minutes, and just decided to wing it.
My plans today fell through. If people are interested I'll host a game at 1:00 PM Pacific time, about 70 minutes from now. I'm thinking it'll go for three or four hours, and we can pick it up again tomorrow or next weekend.

I just didnt expect the game to take as much time as it was, Next time I'll budget more time for it
It's a turn based strategy, we did an all nighter once and still didn't get anywhere near finishing. I think it was either Cynic Jester or Barnaby Jones hosting it, and I want to know whether that save still exists, because it was epically awesome with like a (nearly) full game nearly.
Do strafe ships always suck? What about Torpedo ships?
Strafe ships are actually fantastic if you load them with the right weapons and use the right orders.
Bear in mind that ships on follow orders will prioritize their movement order over getting a bead on their target, so you either need very maneuverable ships or you need to hit full stop to bring all those forward weapons to bear. This also applies to heavy beams since those are also always fixed forward.

So I just bought this (the base game) from D2D for $5. Money well spent so far. It was a little jarring not having to manage colonies, but I sucked at that part in most 4x games anyway.
Playing as the tried and true Humans right now. Things seem to be going alright, though I had to learn the hard way that fast expansion is unwise. There seems to be a lot of space dolphins in my current game.
I do enjoy the random events. One of which was an "unknown alien menace" that came to one of my systems. I sent my grand fleet in to crush this menace, completely unaware of what the "menace" even was. We get into combat and my ships are up against a, I dunno a giant, mechanical, fish-ship thingy. The battle was long, but my forces prevailed. Only to have the victory message read "alien derelict destroyed". I felt a little bad at celebrating a victory over what now appears to be Space Cubans.

You should at least pick up Born of Blood as well. They make a lot of interface tweaks between each expansion and even just BoB will put a lot of needed polish on the game.

Torpedos are great!
Torpedo SHIPS? ... bit of a mixed bag. Antimatter torp cruisers and such are very, very good.
Photonic destroyers? ... not so much - but they do have their uses. Photonics seem to be over-weighted a LOT in autoresolve.
Hiver torpedo boat swarms are perfectly capable of stinging even dreadnoughts to death (assuming you actually have decent torpedos).
Auto-resolve seems to undervalue or even neglect accuracy a lot of the time, so things like photonics or dumbfire racks end up being AMAZING. If you're actually using photonics in combat, forward ships working as artillery spotting will help, but it's pretty tricky to line up a shot on anything smaller than a cruiser.
A pretty standard set-up for my torpedo ships (i.e. for bugs) is an Assault/Barrage Cruiser, with a Disruptor or EMP in the forward tube and then your most damaging torps loaded in the mission.

I was going to ask about this, cause I got the game from D2D, but they do not have BoB or AMoC. I suppose I could get the Sword of the Stars Ultimate Naval Yard Edition. That one comes with all the expansions including Argos for 40 bucks.
Even though I only paid $5 for SoTS I am hesitant to buy it again. Maybe in a couple days I will pick it up. By that time I will have a good idea if I really like SoTS or not. So far so good though.

I often use photonics on assault ship sections paired with heavy beams.
They have similar optimal ranges, but photonics give a bit of extreme range power too. Also, the later upgrades in that line are pretty damn awesome.

I think it did, but a crappy multiplayer. But if it worked, man, customizing all those ships before battle would have been fun!

It did, I used to play it with my roommate. Though Nexus is a completely different kind of game than SotS.
- Friday night from about 9 pm onwards
- Saturday morning from about 9 am to noon
- Sunday most of the day except for a gap centered around lunch (noon to 2 pm or so)
Also that's all EDT, so convert as appropriate.

There's a set of tutorials on the main menu that are pretty decent.
There's an awful lot to learn, though...
You can always play with us and join vent. We are always willing to help during a game.
