It's a Metroidvania. There hasn't been a classic experience since Julius mode in Aria, with Dawn's version being a hybrid of the two styles. Haven't touched the bonus modes in PoR yet though.
Anybody try out Co-op mode yet? It's a shame it's only a boss attack mode, but what's doubly cool about it is that it's putting you up against the Dawn of Sorrow bosses. Sadly, with 3 different people I haven't been able to get past the first boss. It's that giant with the huge fist and eye beam. It's tricky to avoid his punches, and since it looks like you both share a health bar, if even one person is sloppy at dodging, you're going to get beat down.

Too bad there's no way to call them faggots through the DS. Then maybe they could dodge the giant laser.

You can call them faggots. They just can't hear you. It may not have the intended effect, but it helps anyway.

So I got this game at launch. I pre-ordered at Gamestop a while ago when I was trying to pre-order Phantasy Star Universe for the soundtrack that I do not listen to anymore. I had class on the day of this release, but since I pre-ordered, I figured I'd be okay in picking it up when I was done with classes.
I was excited to get to Gamestop around 6:00 pm that day. Handed them my reciept, and got my game. One problem...no pre-order bonus. I asked where mine was; they were all gone. Apparently, this Gamestop had more pre-orders than they did pre-order bonuses. When I placed money for my reserve, I asked how many bonuses they were planning to get, since I knew that the reaction for the bonus by these boards meant that I wasn't the only one hyped for this game. The guy at the time told me he didn't know, but they should get enough to cover their pre-orders. No they didn't. There was a stack of Castelvania games on their back shelf, and I'm sure some, if not most, of those were awaiting pick-up from customers who also pre-ordered the game.
So Castlevania sits unopened in my room. I'll play it eventually. Just want to finish finals this week. Still pissed that I didn't get my bonus. Called other Gamespots asking if they had any in stock and if there was a way I could get my hands on one. One of the Gamestops said they only had enough for their pre-orders. I should've gone to that one. Fucking sucks ass.
Sorry for the rant. I didn't want to read any of the spoilers to this game either. Carry on with the regular Portrait of Ruin discussion. And also, if you got your pre-order bonus, congrats.
Why is it that every time I get a badass greatsword, it's always just after I've gotten something better? A Ruler Sword just dropped a Dragon Slayer, but I'll be damned if I use anything but the Vampire Killer right now.

What grabbed me by the balls just now are the two extra game modes, similar to the Richter mode in SotN, Max in HoD, Julius in DoS, etc. Light non-story spoilers, but only if you don't want one of the game modes spoiled. I almost feel guilty for having 3 pre-order bonuses. Buuuut then again, I had 3 pre-orders. ;3
Even if I canceled one they still let me have the bonus since it was sent for my pre-order.

[realspoiler:5f9402f695]The main thing to do is this: As soon as Dracula fully materializes, jump over him (if Death isn't in the way) and start whaling on him with the Vampire Killer. Remember that only his head and shoulders region is vulnerable; attacking his body will do you no good. When Death gets close, back up a little, then let him "lock on" to you before going forward again. You can keep hitting Dracula even when he's silhouetted, so go for every hit you can.
If you can't jump over him (either because Death's in the way or because he's at the edge of the room), back as far away as you can before his projectiles come. The flame projectiles can be destroyed by attacking them, but I generally find it easier to jump over them. If Death is coming close, you want to jump "toward" him in such a way that you get over the flames but not so high that you run into him.
Similarly, with the volcano balls, there's a set pattern: Jump, duck, jump, duck. The main thing is "tricking" Death into doing his downward attack when you're not there, thus freeing you up for several seconds.
If Death appears to be staying in the middle of the room for no reason, this is trouble, one of three things can happen:
1) Dracula will teleport under him and do his "Bad Moon" spell, which transforms him into a bunch of rushing bats. As soon as you see the bats starting, you want to begin a jump "toward" them. You can double-jump over them.
2) Dracula will teleport under Death and the latter will immediately create a "wave" of scythes. As soon as you see this starting, use the Meteor dual attack. You will be temporariliy invincible when you do this, and if you didn't wait too long you'll destroy all the scythes. Dracula's part of that move depends entirely on the number of scythes he sucked into himself; no scythes, no attack.
3) Dracula will teleport to just a little ways away from one edge of the room. This is your cue to get to the other side as quickly as you can. A few seconds later, Death becomes this ultrascythe that Dracula uses to create a devastating attack which encompasses most of the room and is almost always lethal.
DO NOT:
1) Use the Combo attacks for anything except what I mentioned above. They don't do nearly enough damage, and when you really need it you might find yourself out of mana.
2) Use the partner system. As with most bosses, the partner AI is too stupid to avoid most attacks, and you'll just wind up losing most of your mana.
3) Jump-kick on Dracula's head to avoid his attacks. I know it's tempting, but Death will use his Scythe attack on you.
End boss stuff:
[spoiler:125589681b]Man, Dracula and Death, together? That just equals rape. I'm having a devil of a time just jumping around avoiding blows- any strats on killing them?[/spoiler:125589681b]
[spoiler:125589681b]You only need to attack Death. Though Jonathan with the Vampire Killer (and a Bible, if you've taken the time out for the horrendous Subskills Mastery grind) will be capable of pumping out damage like nobody's business, I would recommend playing as Charlotte because it's far easier to take this boss on at range, and as an aside Charlotte will take noticably less damage from Dracula's mostly magic-based attacks. Run, make sure Death is either offscreen or very close to it, fully-charge Spirit of Light, then when he gets within range let it go. At level 50 (which you will probably be if you've killed everything up to this point) and defense gear you will be pushing 200 damage per cast. If you're willing to risk taking extra damage, wearing nothing but casting gear could push that up by at least thirty. When Death is close to hovering over you, just run past him and his downward slash will miss entirely. Repeat until Death goes down. It'll take a while, but you shouldn't take much damage.
Other attacks to watch for: Death and Dracula's Dual Crush. If Death gives Dracula his scythe, you have a few seconds to run the fuck away. Dracula will pull off a massive AoE attack that takes up almost the entire arena. If you aren't at the opposite end to Dracula, you will take major damage, and if you aren't fully-healed will probably die right off the bat. If Death creates an M-shaped line of white sickles, Dracula will absorb them and each sickle he absorbs will be sent your way as a single fiery ball of death. When you see the sickles, either destroy them all (anything works) or use Charlotte's fully-charged Clear Skies. Charlotte must be your main character, and Clear Skies must be fully charged, otherwise the area of effect will be far too small to destroy all the sickles. Dracula spends most of his time teleporting around and through fireballs in whatever direction he's facing. They travel slowly and move in a predictable pattern, so they're easy enough to dodge (simply jump over them). However, if Dracula is not standing at the ends of the arena, it is best to make sure you are behind him. He'll merely launch his projectiles at... the darkness![/spoiler:125589681b]
