Speaking of quests, I still can't mince that damn meat. I've tried swatting around the hooked flanks in the northwest of the town, and am just absolutely clueless.

punch it. Like in Rocky.
Hm. "Mince" was a pretty dreadful choice of words on their part, then. Should have said tenderize.

Yeah you have to use a fist or mace type weapon (or your bare hands).

Yay. Competition. I was hoping you'd see my post. I've improved my time for course 2 but you still have me beat. I'll post them all again since I trimmed the quote tree. Looks like my course 1 is still winning though. I use Jon and Charlotte. I have no clue how you manage with Richter since I abuse the Hercules Ring and speed boost.
As soon as you begin pushing the train, call in your partner.
*tries it with Charlotte first, fails*
*tries it again with Jonny first, succeeds*
Well, how about that. It worked! Thanks.
The lord of that castle should really get the brakes on that train checked.
Technically speaking, the train isn't part of the castle. It's one of Brauner's paintings. Dracula has nothing to do with them.
Also, nice avatar. One of these days I should finish my second playthrough of Riviera. I got to the Dark Progrenitors and just kind of grimaced and moved on.
Everytime I boot up this game in the hopes of finally taking on the last boss, I get sidetracked for hours instead. "All right, going to do it--well, hold on, I should really work on finding more hidden spots in the castle... Okay, now I'll--wait, after I do a few more quests. Now, definitely--wait,

I'd disagree with you kind sire. Now I have to finish the game in hard mode with all level caps (they all give you a new item ;o) and all other modes and all boss rushes. Then I'll truely be done with PoR ;D

So I just started playing the game, and I was wondering what the downside to having your partner out is. Does it drain MP or anything? Why not have him or her always by your side? And what's the diamond at the top of the screen when you summon them?

The MP bar acts as their life meter while they're out, and since you can't easily control them directly, they can be a real liability to your secondary attacks. Also, having anything less than max MP makes you pick up hearts out of candles and the like, instead of money. That can suck if you didn't much plan on using your sub-attacks often in the first place.
It doesn't sound like much, but a lot of the combination attacks can make or break your success on some of the bosses. That reminds me (don't read this if you just started, I'm just throwing this out there for anyone else that might appreciate it):

Am I missing it, or is there no jump-cancel?
I don't actually know, I haven't been using any weapons it would apply to (jump-cancel with great-swords in DoS tended to cancel my first swing before it hit in front of me, I only really use it with katanas).

So how much stuff is there to do in this game in comparison to Dawn of Sorrow?

It's that characters weakness. His invincibility time when getting hit is next to nothing. In his other starring roles you have to accept that you WILL get hit at times. The trick there for some points if you miss killing an enemy and it gets inside your attack range is to duck. If you're crouched the attack/enemy will pass through you without knocking you back at all, so between that and your smaller hit box you only get hit once.

I was thinking about picking it up.
Unlike Dawn of Sorrow it goes back to having many different weapons to pick up instead of upgrading a small group of weapons to different forms. Also what's really awesome is that Johnathan's alternate weapons are put in a seperate category of equippable item, each of which is upgraded once when you achieve Mastery of it.
Mastery is measured by how many skill points you have in a particular weapon, a new attribute for all enemies is how many skill points are given to whatever sub-weapon you hit it with before killing it.
So instead of being disposable one use items like in Symphony of the Night and Harmony of Dissonance, items like Bwaka Knife are permanent additions to your arsenal that consume magic points (refilled with hearts as usual). So their ammunition system has come full circle.
There are also a ton of dinky little sub quests you can do for one of the supporting characters. Most of these you'll accomplish just by thoroughly playing the game.
There's also other characters to use when you beat the game well which are fun and rad.

Just got the game the other day. How do you the second quest (I think it's second) where you have to mince meat in the marketplace?
Go through the first portrait, and head towards the top left-hand part of the map. There should be some hanging meat, you just need to hit it with a fist weapon, and that should do it.

Actually, Maria's attacks in general are absurdly powerful. I beat most bosses just by spamming her regular attack or Red Bird attack at them.

God, look at the first two pictures in the last two rows. Fucking A, why couldn't the art actually in the game have looked more like that, instead of the generic, plain, "I'm-gonna-draw-Charlotte-with-eyes-way-the-fuck-towards-the-far-sides-of-her-head" shit.

Give you +1 atk for every 100k gold. So with 4.7 mil I have an additional 47 attack which is nice. So cruel they make you spend it all first.
I still might spend all my gold and get 9 rings abusing the quest so for whatever reason I never have to complete it again.
It's going to be a few more days until I try boss rushes again. I'm trying to complete the game on hard cap 50.
