The only jerks online are the guys DCing on us. I've gotten the shit kicked out of me by guys using assists and block strings to chip the ever loving hell out of me (Strider/Doom/Ryu. Doom assist Strider lock down followed by Doom jumping fierce / Hadoken assist lock down). But I can respect people who play well enough to lock me down. DCers though? Scum o' the internets.
I have a theory about this actually.
You see the internet is a series of tubes. And when you play online games asswhooping flows back and forth between the tubes. Yet, you see usually when players of equal skill are fighting the flow is balanced because of the forces working against each other. However, sometimes there are beatings so brutal...so horrific...so one-sided...that they simply clog up the tubes. The tubes burst and the internet is temporarily down until all of the asswhoop is rerouted.
So don't blame your opponent for DCing, blame yourself.
And I don't know how much the ingame manual explains this (or if it explains it at all), but new players should be aware of how tagging affects health.
In this example, Iron Man has been fighting on point for the entire start of the round, War Machine has been called as an assist sparingly, and always given time to recover health offscreen, and Spiral has been called as an assist frequently and has taken a lot of damage.
The red portion of the health bar is completely recoverable, either by being offscreen for a period of time (calling them in as an assist pauses the health recovery), or through certain specials (such as Rogue's power drain on characters that grant her Life Up or Shuma-Gorath's and Omega Red's life drain moves).
So, in this situation, if you let Spiral rest a while and use War Machine as your primary assist, her health will recover over time and eventually you could bring her in again as a completely healed point character. But a key thing to know about MvC2 lifebars is that making an offscreen character your point character will completely and instantly remove all of their red lifebar, making that damage permanent. I've been watching YouTube videos where a point character will get low on life, they're tagged out, and then tagged back in mere seconds later.
Even if it hits, this is a very bad habit to learn.
In the conclusion of the pictured fight, eventually Iron Man was knocked out, leaving a fresh War Machine to come in next. But the player continued to call Spiral, she continued to take red lifebar damage, so when War Machine finally got KO'd, Spiral permanently lost roughly 90% of her lifebar just by having to jump on screen and lost the game in seconds.
Even if it hadn't gone this way, a cold tag from Iron Man to War Machine in this situation means very bad things for Spiral. If Iron Man tags to War Machine, and is blocked, the other player is given a free opportunity to QCF + Assist 2. War Machine gets kicked offscreen, and Spiral is forced to enter and lose all her recoverable lifebar.
Overall:
Red health recovers while offscreen and idle.
All damage a called-out assist character takes is red.
Block/chip damage is NOT recoverable.
Defensively, allow high-red characters time to recover. It's like playing the round with more than 100% overall health.
Offensively, snap high-red characters back into the playfield. Make your inflicted damage permanent.
You guys know when someone disconnects on you in a ranking match they get a lose and you get win for it. I'm Just letting you guys know
And just for shits and giggle I wish games would have penalties for people that disconnect you get minus 2 losses on your record. That way they have incentive to stay till the very end.
So in an awesome twist of fate, my fightpad arrived today. Didn't realize the guys shipped it out of SoCal so it took all of one day to arrive. So awesome.
I am down for player matches if I'm online. Just add/invite me so I can try out some new dudes.

Yeah, forcing players off the field and injured ones onto the field is a pretty major tactical advantage if you can keep track of it. In one specific case, an opponent kept calling Akuma for an assist but was blocking for most of my attacks. This meant I could keep hitting Akuma here and there.
I didn't manage to do a whole lot of damage to the main fighter, but by the time I forced the first fighter off the field and forced Akuma to come in, Akuma had maybe 10% health left. Without doing any major damage to an active fighter, this immediately turned the fight from "scraping by" to "huge landslide victory". It's also pretty sweet to be paying enough attention to do a huge amount of damage to an opponent by landing a single attack (the forced tag-out hit).
Not to mention everyone's favorite: other character calls out assist, you snapback, hit both of them, and juggle the assist until it dies. It can't block, so simply repeating a launcher (with proper timing) is all it takes.
I finally got online for the first time in this game and I'm wondering if it does any sort of skill based match making for ranked, or is it just all random? I really can't tell.

I was reading up on this game and heard this was quite frowned upon in casual play. I think its legit, but I'm definitely not doing this if Im ever at an arcade. Unless I can take the guy then yeah why not.

My only annoyance is how little chip damage Iceman takes while blocking.
Isn't he immune to energy based attack chip damage? Or something along those lines.

Yeah, folks who don't think any more than to just constantly spam assists with no plan in mind deserve to lose their assists. Assists aren't supposed to replace being able to play the game; they're there to be used as extra attacks your character can't otherwise do. While I'm okay with not picking murder-teams purely to keep things challenging, I'm not going to roll out the red carpet and let opponents do whatever they want because it's considered rude to do otherwise.
For Iceman, I had one guy pull in Cyclops and start spamming energy blasts against me on one of the rare occasions I played Iceman. After successfully landing three ice beams in a row without getting hit in return, I switched characters and just beat the hell out of the guy the old-fashioned way. I figure the guy was already at such a disadvantage for not realizing how horrible his strategy was that it would just be best to get things over with quickly.
And yeah, Iceman has some kind of ridiculous immunity to certain types of chip damage. He's pretty weak, though. A couple good combos will put him down and even if someone throws out icebeams constantly, it's not hard to work around it and get in close.

Was it a guy just hitting crouching fierce punch with Cyclops? Was one of his other characters Cable? Did he pull the plug right after you beat the tar out of his Cyclops? If so, I've face the same guy. I guess he doesn't learn.

It really is a small world. He was my first ragequit!
Anyone finding it hard to tag out? Sometimes I'll try tagging Tron out for Wolverine/Juggernaut, and she'll just lob at rock at someone and get combo'd into oblivion.
In MvC2, infinites aren't really infinite. In X-Men vs. Street Fighter through Marvel vs. Capcom 1, all you needed to do to kill a character was get them into an infinite and that was it. MvC2 won't let infinites go on infinitely, and will eventually spin you out in a dizzy animation and bring you down able to block. Which is why the Iron Man infinite is eventually ended by a Proton Cannon at the end of the combo.
And Tron's rock lob is heavy kick. Getting that instead of a tag out means you're not hitting heavy punch at the exact enough time.
I think I am going to try out Jill/Sabertooth/Charlie. I was messing around with ST and seemed to enjoy him.
edit: Some guy was running Guile/Iron Man/Cable. Very tough team. I almost beat them with Guile/Venom/Charlie. I failed miserably with Jill/Venom/Sabertooth and I believe Guile/Venom/Sabertooth.
This is what I'd like to see on xbl. Not sure most people could stomach it, but it's such a brilliant game at higher levels.
Ahh how I missed the Rogue ability swap that actually gained the opponents abilities. So fun, I was bummed when they dumbed it down for MvC2 ages back.

I've been rockin' it Sonson/Jill/Tron in MvC2. Been winning as much as I've been losing in Ranked, figure that's good enough for me.
Oh shit, someone else who plays Sonson. Maybe you can help me with a problem I talked about earlier in the thread. My problem is that I have a hard time with her launcher (2HK) because it has such short range I have problems comboing into it. How do you work around that?

I'm nowhere near good or even decent at this game, but I don't really go for Sonson's launcher since it is difficult to combo into with its short range + pushback. You can try 2LKx2 2HK. She has a second launcher, 3HP, which I don't think can be combo'd into(?) but has better range. I mostly go for her ground combos while working Tron's projectile assist into them instead. I save my launcher & air combos for Jill when I bring her out. But like I said, I'm don't really know what I'm talking about.
