Graphics problem (no more games)

Just a quick question that I'd like some confirmation on before I purchase new hardware:

Have a computer I've built myself which is about two years old. AMD64 X2 processor, 2 GB RAM and a 512 MB Sapphire x1600xt graphics card, which was already a bit long in the tooth when I bought it. Recently (read: since Fallout 3 has come out) playing games results in red/green/blue pixels flashing on my screen and the screen going to black for a second or two randomly. I'm thinking the graphics card is on its way out. Does anyone have any other ideas as to what could be wrong?

Edit: forgot to add, none of this behavior is present when I do "normal things" on my computer, browse the web, photos, music, etc.

Most likely overheating. Especially if it's a pattern. Screen going black could be driver resetting.
