An 18th birthday present under $200 (AUD)?

My 18th birthday was over a month ago, on the 18th of march. My mum's been insisting that she get me something 'special', but I really have no idea what to ask for, since there's nothing I really want that's also what she would call 'special'.

The price range I've gotten from my mum is around $200 (that's AUSTRALIAN DOLLARS!). If it's something really cool, though, I could get my mum and dad to combine their presents in to one thing.

Lets see... Err... I don't have an MP3 player, but I don't know if I really want one. Before I started uni I never thought I'd really need one, but now that I'm spending long periods working in the library between tutorials/workshops this isn't out of the question. Before I settle on getting one of these, however, I'd like to see if there are any other things that might be a cool alternative.

I've asked for books and graphic novels, but apparently these aren't 'special' enough. :|

I already own a Wii, not interested in a 360 and there's no chance of a PS3 until there's a price drop (though I would like one). Games are also generally out of the question.

I was thinking of getting a drawing tablet (since I'm doing a graphic design course) but I don't think I'm a skilled enough artist to need one, at least not yet.

I'm out of ideas. I don't know what else to ask for. Maybe a nice jacket or something, but I'm not sure I want to ask for clothes (I'll think about it though). Anyone got any ideas?

This would be cool, but there aren't really any bands in the country that I particularly want to see at the moment.

Heh... I still haven't needed to shave yet.

Would like this, but I can't get it at the moment. There are reasons.

Was thinking of it, but I know I'd regret it.

Going overseas would be cool, but I don't have any money or a job, so if my parents were paying for the flight they would also be paying for accomodation, food, expenses etc... I don't see it happening.

Got a pair, but have only used them once.

I'm not making this very easy... :P

Also, I just thought of a getting a new bike, but if I wanted a decent one it'd probably be out of my price range.

I'm not sure when it's acceptable to say, "Okay, yeah, I'm good enough now. I need a tablet."

If you want one, get one.
Especially if you're doing design later.

    Practice NOW.

What do you wear normally? I'm not sure Djinn was specifically suggesting a pair of dress shoes, but rather a good quality pair of shoes that you would wear all the time.

Can't really go wrong with a tablet

takes a while to get used to, but is a good investment

I think every man should own a watch he can be proud of. They add class and character, and are something that can be passed down. You don't want to pass down the Yoda watch you got from Burger King to future generations.

Soooo fucking comfortable, and durable as all hell.

Best clothing item I have ever purchased. You can probably find an everyday pair for $60-$90 USD.

Note: their site is a travesty, but your regional online shoe store should carry them.

    Good thinking but over budget.

I second the thought about the tablet. It may not last a life time but it will be something you'll get a pretty personal connection with plus it will let you grow skills. I'd say that qualifies for special.

You could get them to buy you stock or something since the market is tanked right now and it would be sort of a "investment for your future" kind of gift? Then if a few years down the line you decide you wish you had asked for (X) then you can sell the stock and buy it.

I second a tablet or the best headphones/ speakers that money can buy.

or, if you're interested in music at all, you could pick up an instrument/ equipment for it. (a guitarist, for instance, can never have too many pedals :D* )

[they can, but you know what I mean]

Ah... Forgot about this thread. Been busy.

It looks like it's down to either the mp3 player or the tablet. If I were to get a tablet, it seems like the only thing in my price-range is a Bamboo, which also seems appropriate for my needs. Anyone had any experience with these?

Well anyway, for the meantime I'm undecided. I'll think about it.

i got a cheap bamboo tablet from dick smith's and it's rad

small, easy to set up and hide away, and good looking

make sure you install all the proper drivers though, by (windows) default it doesn't have all the neat features like pressure based linewidth
