Video Conversion for iPods?

AmaranthAmaranth Registered User regular
Hey folks, I'm in need of some software that can do any of the following:
  • Rip DVDs to .avi, .mpg or othersuch files
  • Do the above, and then convert to viewable format on iPods
  • Convert .avi files to viewable files on an iPod

Money is not an issue in the equation, so all suggestions welcome.
Thanks!

Handbrake tends to be the near-universal suggestion.

if you're on a Mac Handbrake is all you need.

If you are on a PC you need a tool to rip the DVD first, then use handbrake to convert it.

The common denominator is that you should use handbrake. Your platform determines the rest.

I have a related question. How can I put songs downloaded from Napster onto my iPod Nano without burning and then ripping a CD?

Napster's stuff is in WMA format, which means that burning a CD and reripping it gets you the as good of quality as you're going to get. There are ways to break the DRM but they're complex and questionably legal.
