I think I might give VIII another shot when it hits PSN. I, like so many other people, liked the game enough for the first few discs, but had no idea what was going on story-wise, and after the orphanage bit I was all "Fuck it" and just dropped the game. This was a long time ago, though, and my tastes have changed; I'm curious to try it out, but I still hate the feeling of having to spend 20 minutes in battle Drawing magic out of enemies to really see positive effects.
I know that FFVIII is considered to be the black sheep of the series by most people, but for some reason it always sticks out as one of the more memorable ones for me in terms of enjoying the story and characters. I'm not sure what it is, but I think that if FFVII and FFVIII had been put on PSN at the same time, I'd have bought VIII before VII.
Meh, not to change this into one of those threads(Especially since Snugs doesn't want it) but I agree that it does get a harder time than it deserves. To me VII and VIII are pretty much interchangeable on my "like" list and look how crazy people go over that game. I'll give people the shortcomings in the plot, but plotholes are the spice of life in video games anyway(plotholes or simply stupid coincidences).

FFVIII is one of the games where the more I play it the more I like it. My current calculations put FFVIII as the favorite Final Fantasy ever in about 21.4 play throughs. :P

All this talk to FFVIII almost makes me wanna play it again.. I just remember spending like hours on one of those little secret islands or whatever drawing Ultima,Flare and Meteor over and over again for my main party.. other than that I can't remember a damn thing about the game.. Hell, I barely remember anything in detail about VII.. I should probably play that game again too.. but where on earth am I going to find an extra 80-100 hours for both of those..
One thing I can´t understand about FFVIII:
What in the hell is the GF Eden? Ifrit is some humanoid lion, doomtrain is a... train, tomberry is a tomberry, odin is a knight, etc., but I never understood what is supossed to be Eden.

Anyone know if this will work in the PSP? I want to put FF7 on it since I am flying out to Canada for my honeymoon (long flight).
Yup, you're good. SanDisk is my preferred Pro Duo maker; they tend to be cheaper than the Sony ones. Avoid Lexar sticks, since they tend to have slower access speeds—I have one only because it was cheap.
Did you get married already? Congrats if so! I know you've had that thing in your sig for a while.
So I'm playing through FF1 on PSP, and what in fuck is going on in this Cave of Earth. I've literally got into 12 or so battles in a row with one each and every step. Is it supposed to be this way?
Sounds like you went into the Hall of Giants. It's a small looping area just west of the stairs into the dungeon, and every single tile is triggered to force you into a battle.

You're going the "wrong" way. That part of the cave has a 100% encounter rate with Giants.
The stairs down to the next level are to the right, not to the left.
(It's sad that I can picture the entire level in my mind, isn't it?)

Yes, if it's what I'm thinking of then that's always been in the game since the NES. Great leveling/cash hallway. (It's just that one hallway.)

Yeah, I guess that's where I went... freaking annoying...
Yeah. A rule of thumb for FF1 is also to never approach a treasure chest from the most obvious angle whenever possible. Nine times out of ten it'll have a fixed battle square in front of it, usually one you can't run from. They kill low-level runs.

10 more days and I will be a married man. Thanks! Yeah, the honeymoon is EXPENSIVE compared to everything else.
Picked up the 4GB one, thanks! I was looking at the 8GB one, but I never really play my PSP anymore so I thought this was a good compromise.
Whenever I startto appreciate FFVIII a bit too much I always just remember the fucking awful orphanage bit and it snaps me out of it. There's no justification for that beyond "Oh shit, plothole! Fix it fix it fix it!"
The orphanage bit is a really great plot hook that didn't quite work.
If it had been hinted at through the game up to the point through party dialogue, or even had more and more clues dropped about possible negative side effects of Guardian Force junctioning, it'd probably have been a nice, dark twist to the plot, especially if it were expanded upon afterwards. Instead, we got something along the lines of: "GF must've destroyed our memories! Let's keep using GF!" and then nothing is spoken of it again.
IIRC, it was actually hinted at about the memory loss a couple times, however my big problem with that scene was the bolded
As Professor Snugglesworth mentioned, they did say they would keep a journal; and if you check the computers in the classroom after that point, you can find that Selphie is indeed keeping an online journal, which later has a few other characters say stuff. Of course, she has one whole section devoted to 'Sir' Laguna as well...
Yeah you do. Honestly, did nobody from Square take a look at these scenes and realized they were severely off their anatomy? And no, I don't believe it was on purpose either.
The only thing dumber was that she was in a coma for seven days. From what? Getting hit by a huge gust of wind? Nobody else was unconscious, or even hurt.
The gust of wind caused her oversized breasts to hit her in the face, thus rendering her unconscious.

ya, my wife and i spent maybe 500 bucks total on the wedding itself. rented an outdoor space for 50 bucks, had a friend of our get ordained for like 20, then all the rest went to renting furniture/decorations.
the honeymoon cost well over 2 grand up front and then whatever we ended up spending once we got down there.
Also my wife adores VIII above all other FF games, i've never played it, and i doubt i ever will as i have seen the ending movie several times, and have no desire to play through it.
So I'm playing through FF1 on PSP, and what in fuck is going on in this Terra cave. I've literally got into 12 or so battles in a row with one each and every step. Is it supposed to be this way?

I much prefer the penninsula near Pravoka, but the Giants are a good second choice if you don't have anyone who can cast Fir2.

FFVIII is deceptively short. If you exploit the draw and junction system, you can break the game and blaze through it in 40-50 hours, which I consider rather short for a FF. The part that's deceptive is that exploiting those systems is really boring, so while it may not take long to reach godlike power, you definitely experience every second of those 40-50 hours.
How to fix the boringness of the FF8 draw system:
1. Realize you don't need to have 100 of every spell for every character
2. ...
3. Profit!
Or just use item refining to make 100 of the spell in all of 30 seconds.
This.
Seriously, I don't get people who complain about how boring it was to draw spells for hours at a time in FF8. I mean I could say any game is boring if I sat there and did the same damned thing for hours at a time. All of the FFs are boring in this way if you just sit in one spot and grind or something. Maybe it was because FF8 was my first RPG, but I never ever felt the need to sit around and draw, and I never got so anal about strength and stuff that I refused to cast a spell because it might make me a miniscule bit more weak. FF8 had a great system.
The stock excuse for something going wrong with Tifa is to stick her in a coma.
Momma died? Fancy going through Mt. Nibel on an insane quest to try and find her but you fail? COMA FOR YOU.
Well, look, we all know a female character can't actually accomplish anything on her own. She is allowed to try, in order to establish herself as 'strong' and 'independent' but she must promptly fail so that a man may save her.
She managed to escape on her own (not counting the deus ex machina moments...of which there were several), and she also was the one who saved Cloud. That's more than most other heroines accomplished.
Someone should count through FFVII and AC just to see how many times Tifa loses consciousness, it just gets absurd in the end.
That's... Surprisingly true.
This is quite true, but at least they're sticking with the 7 symbolism.
Maybe they plan to have her have 7 comas in total. :?
I never saw it as a sign of weakness, though, but (and I believe that article I mentioned also concluded this):
It shows that Tifa is a survivor, that despite the numerous ordeals that nearly kill her, she still lives on and endures. She was stabbed by Sephiroth, but managed to survive, while Aerith had died instantly. The belief here is that it was Aerith's destiny to pass on, while it is Tifa's destiny to live on. She even survived a trip to the Lifestream, and that's supposed to be impossible (though there are theories going around).
So basically, the reason Tifa is knocked unconscious a lot is because she's the most active in the group after Cloud.

So, was there any justification for Squall to actually like Rinoa? She just seemed like a clingy brat who desperately needed to get backhanded during the Ragnarok scene.

So... I just watched the four date scenes for FFVII at the Gold Saucer, just finished Barrets. Hilarious by the way, spoiler-tagged a video for reference (yo):
Round about 2:49... Is Barret, uh... Isn't he pretty much saying that Cloud "likes them young"? What the HELL? How did I miss this back when I was 12 and playing through VII multiple times?

It's my intention to include every date scenario in the comic in some shape or form (mainly as "extras").
I might go so far as to include new date scenarios with the other party members.
