You guys are giving me way too many ideas.

I would love it if you continued to do so with other parts of the game. Seriously, I already have a large amount of it set in stone, but I'm always up for new ideas.

And I honestly thought up the Cloud/Vincent date in that exact same manner.

Thinking about it, there's something about what Yuffie says upon leaving the gondola that seems ripe for comedy... "I think I'll sleep really well tonight."

...and I now have the idea of Cloud getting back to his room after chasing Cait Sith, about to go to bed, when suddenly he realises... "...What the fuck?! WHERE THE HELL IS MY UNDERWEAR?!"

Cloud should have the same reaction any sane person has to Cait Sith.

    Cloud: Not interested.

I just started playing FF1 on the PSP, and man, the graphics are gorgeous. Totally worth the $10 I spent on it.

I got FF2 as well, which everyone seems to think is the bastard child of the series. I've never played it though, so I have no opinion.

If you can get past the bizzaro leveling system, it's actually a pretty solid game.

You'd probably do yourself a favour if you just forgot you bought FFII.

Actually, I do suggest you play it, if only to see that what everyone says is true. It's certainly a unique game, that's for sure.

Final Fantasy II is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be.

...well, okay, the very original was a hard game to like, as it featured a stat lowering system, where if you use a lot of magic your strength will decrease, and if you attack a lot your intelligence decreased. Newer versions fixed that and it's a perfectly enjoyable game.

I couldn't disagree more. FF2 was a great game, and a big evolution after FF1. If you can get into FF1, then you can sure as hell get into FF2. FF2 is where the storytelling in the series really started, and it still has the gorgeous graphics that you like on the FF1 port. I don't know what the leveling system was really like before the PSP version, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with the PSP version's leveling system. It works fine and you shouldn't ever have to resort to hitting yourself like some complain about.

Really, it's kind of like the complaints about FF8 that we were talking about with the junction system. Sure if you stand around and draw things all day long it's fucking boring, but you don't need to at all. In FF2 it's pretty fucking bizarro if you stand around hitting yourself all day long, too, but you really, really don't need to (it's a pretty freaking easy game overall). It's like people like to actively find a way to make a game unfun.

It still kinda blows. The leveling mechanic is the weakest of the SaGa-esque mechanics, and the story just isn't interesting enough to be worth playing through unless you're a serious completionist.

Well yeah you don't need to get in a random battle and hit yourself now, but in the versions of FFII that most people played and formed their negative opinions on (fan-translated NES and the PSX versions), you did. It was such a hastily-done concept that it took twenty years to fix to the point where you don't need to metagame in order to reach the end.

The PSP and GBA versions are perfectly playable, yeah, but those of us who got swindled (yes, I went there) on the still-broken PSX version feel a bit bitter.

Well, I goofed. I had thought that the convention where we'll be attempting to get licensing for the comic was going to happen next week (June 27), but it turns out it's actually in July.

Good thing too, I was worried that we were approaching a deadline before having our material ready. I've been assured that things are progressing smoothly, although I must also stress that I can't discuss anything that we've decided on. He really wants this to be confidential, and I respect him for that.

But you can continue giving our your ideas and hopes, since it's all conjecture.

I did play the PSX version a while back too, and got a decent chunk into it before being distracted by something else. I don't remember it being nearly as bad as some put it out to be even there. I mean, sure the game's really dated, and really any of the first 3 or so FFs are really only to be played for a sort of historical perspective rather than being genuinely great games by todays standards. Anyway, the PSP version is really nice because the graphics are pretty cool, and the enemy sprites and things look really freaking awesome at times. And it gives a nice perspective on where the story in FF games really comes from.

Whenever I startto appreciate FFVIII a bit too much I always just remember the fucking awful orphanage bit and it snaps me out of it. There's no justification for that beyond "Oh shit, plothole! Fix it fix it fix it!"
The orphanage bit is a really great plot hook that didn't quite work.

If it had been hinted at through the game up to the point through party dialogue, or even had more and more clues dropped about possible negative side effects of Guardian Force junctioning, it'd probably have been a nice, dark twist to the plot, especially if it were expanded upon afterwards. Instead, we got something along the lines of: "GF must've destroyed our memories! Let's keep using GF!" and then nothing is spoken of it again.

IIRC, it was actually hinted at about the memory loss a couple times, however my big problem with that scene was the bolded

You know the whole 'we were all in an orphanage' thing could have been an incredible twist, if the lead up was better.
Maybe have squall and the team forgetting minor things up to the point as a kinda foreshadowing. Nothing major, just small plot details or character names.
Have Irvine recognize them and even point it out, but the others just brush him off as a weirdo (Why is this guy talking to me).
Even go so far as showing that the Garden's encourage GF use because the drawbacks of memory loss are worth it for the power to defeat the sorceress (who really should have been Rinoa, I mean come on).

Right now the only real reference to the memory loss was a throwaway line in the computer terminal, which I imagine a lot of people didn't read anyway.

Well, they've never had any comics done (not counting their manga line, which is licensed by Tokyopop, but I believe is published by their own manga line, which also publishes Fullmetal Alchemist), so at this point it's hard to say if they'll budge or not.

But according to him, Square DID license the idea to Top Cow, but ultimately rejected them for their artwork, so I guess they're not above the idea. Considering what Udon has done for Street Fighter, I would think it would be hard for Square to turn them down.

    On FF7 just got
Cloud and Tifa back after that LONG-ASS sequence of regaining his identity. Time for some sweet underwater Junon action.

Also, I forgot, when does the Big Materia = All materia? That does happen right?

And where is "last resort" located? I can't quite remember that one. Now that I got Phoenix I'm itching for it.

Lastly... getting the Tetra Elementals (morphed Cactar item) at the soonest opportunity kind of breaks this game huh?

It does, I believe it happens if you get a Master-grade of all the Materia of that colour (E.G., to get Master Summon from the huge materia, raise every summon materia in the game to master-grade).

If "Last Resort" you mean "Final Attack", it's kinda obscure, but it's in the battle square at the Gold Saucer. Get enough points and buy W-Summon and Omnislash first, then amass a further... 64000(?) Battle Points. Then you can enter a special battle where upon winning gets you Final Attack. It's been ages since I did that "special battle" but I think Proud Clod's in there somewhere. Or at least, something really fucking big and nasty that looked like him.

Tetra Elementals I found... Okay. I had Ribbons most of the time.

You can get a set of all the Master materia from beating Emerald Weapon.

Alternatively, you can get a specific Master materia by trading in a full set of Mastered materia of it's type to the appropriate Big Materia.

You can get one set of Master Command/Summon/Magic materia by getting all materia of those kind to master-grade level. E.G., master all 21 Magic Materia, go check the huge materia at Bugenhagen's conservatory, and bam - Master Magic Materia. There's 21 Magic materia, 16 Summon materia, and 13 Command materia.

The other way is just beat Emerald Weapon, take whatever he drops to the old dude in Kalm and he'll give you a full set of the three.

    Is that San Diego comic-con?

    Yep.
Who are you meeting with, Prof? Marketing Dept guys?

    Not me, but he.

    To speak to they.

Ohhh. Udon are pretty cool. It's getting the licensing off Square's Licensing guys that'll be the problem if anything, though. Square tend to do a lot of this kind of stuff exclusively in house now, even action figures are largely designed in-house by 'em. There' even talk of the official strategy guide for FF13 being in house... I do hope you get it though.

It's not above them to look at it, no. I mean they'll do anything that makes money.

I think the number one obsticle facing you guys is really that your artwork looks nothing like their 'approved' artwork. For FF now Nomura or Amano is the gold standard (with Itahana as the standard for FF:CC) and they want all their art to look like that. A friend of mine got some freelance work for Square EU doing some art on things purely because she was amazing at imitating Amano's style. They like to find people who draw like their gold standard... which I assume is why they rejected Top Cow's version.

That's the only obsticle, I guess - your art is very much an American art style for one, and for two it looks nothing like Nomura's art. The problem with this for Square is more to do with marketability in Japan - if something like this was made they'd want to release it in Japan too as the vast majority of their sales of extra stuff (figures, manga, books) happen there, and such an American style wouldn't sell over there.

There's too many factors to say, though. Square US have a lot more freedom now to do what they want, and this may well be the kind of thing they want to do...

I can't comment much on what we've discussed, but having the art mirror Nomura's as close as possible is certainly one of them. You can't tell much from the sketches on his site, but of what I've been personally shown, I do believe we're reaching an acceptable "manga look" that shouldn't turn off Square or FF fans. He wants it to resemble Udon's artists more than anything, and I believe we're reaching that point.

Also, he has stressed time and again that everything is still WIP. There are still some characters that need some fine tuning (who I've mentioned before), but I have a feeling everything will be satisfactory in the final product. I honestly wish I had the artistic skills to do it myself, because the way the pages look in my head would be absolutely incredible if they could be replicated through the art. I'm a big stickler for facial expressions and other fine details, so I'm going to add as much input as possible.

We've also gotten some outside fan-artists to contribute, with covers and illustrations. If anyone here is a closet DeviantArtist, by all means shoot me a PM.

Assuming the Chrono Trigger Novel project is anything to go by, If you don't get shot down immediately, be prepared to be in negotiations for a very long time.
