so comic-con is pretty much all about nerd culture now, with comics competing with nerd shows and movies and stuff and probably vidya games?

Pretty much. Just a general pop-culture con at this point.
There's a pretty wide range covered.

I've attended the convention for several years now and can assure you that the people who need to take the advice from those articles will not be the ones who read them.

ALSO! They listed wikipedia as a good site to check for info :|

Ryan Ottley (Invincible) will be selling a new sketchbook at the con.
Kind of minor info, but I found it noteworthy.

Hmm, trying to think what other bits of comic related stuff I've skimmed and kind of ignored from the news alerts.

The Henson Company is partnering with Archaia comics to produce stuff based on their properties. Labyrinth, Fraggle Rock, etc. I think they used to have a thing with Tokyopop instead.

Oh yeah the Eisner Awards wont be in convention center this year, but over in the new adjacent Hilton.

Last year at the Spaced panel, I was jazzed to have gotten seats right up front.
But my enthusiasm dwindled once the foulest smelling individual sat down next to me. My stomach was just twisting into knots by the end of that panel, it was painful and distracting.
In the exhibit hall it was practically crowd surfing and any funk just sort of faded into background noise apart from the occassional horrible fart cloud.

One guy brought fish and chips with him to the panel in hall H. I think we all know how hard it is to get in there, but I am allergic to fish and he was killing me as he sat down right next time me. The smell was the worst thing

One person in that article mentioned carrying around a bottle of axe body spray which they would spray at smelly people. Congratulations, now they smell like shit and a rancid body spray. Unscented products are effective and courteous to the people around you

Yeah I dont want to smell your half bottle of cologne or hideous body spray either. Just take a shower between days. Geez. There's no getting around being hot and sweaty most likely, so just wash off the previous day before adding a new layer.

How is the con run shuttle service? We're further back this year. Last time we were at the Marriott Marina but are back at the Westin Horton Plaza this time.

I don't know if they do it any more, but the Klingon Lifestyle Presentation used to be great. Bad Star Trek fanfiction acted out by overweight trekkies who have no idea how to use a teleprompter. It was so painful it was entertaining.

Avatar will be there after all:
Mike and I are excited to announce we will be doing a signing at this year's San Diego Comic Con, currently scheduled for 4:00 - 6:00 on Saturday afternoon, July 25. We will be filming a documentary on the making of the television series, and we'll be taping our interactions with people while they get their new ATLA SDCC '09 posters signed (which I am drawing right now!). The producers of the documentary will be pulling certain people who make a great impression aside to film "testimonials" about what the series has meant to each of them. Also, we'd love to film people in their best "Avatar" costumes, new or old, earlier in the day on Saturday. We're not sure if there is already a cosplay gathering planned, but it would behoove us greatly if people could gather at a specific time and place on Saturday, dressed to impress! Bring your favorite fan art, puppets, whatever you want to show to the documentary crew. Thanks! See you in San Diego! -Bryan

Wont be too long now before they spill the full official listings.
In the meantime Warner Bros gave their movie panel lineup.
Based on them showing stuff in 3D, Avatar(the James Cameron project) footage just started sounding even more likely.

Thursday, July 23rd from 3:30pm to 4:30pm: The Final Destination 3D Showcase Presentation
Confirmed talent includes producer Craig Perry. It's likely we'll see other young cast members as well.

Friday, July 24th from 10:15am to 12:30pm: Warner Brothers Presentation - Where the Wild Things Are, The Book of Eli, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Box, Jonah Hex, and Sherlock Holmes

Friday, July 24th from 1:45pm to 2:45pm (in Room 6DE): Q&A with Robert Rodriguez on Shorts
Other talent besides Rodriguez hasn't been confirmed, but expect to see other cast members from Shorts

Also probably not of interest to many based on this shows ratings, but I think it's cool.

Comicon July 23rd, 11:15 - ...a LIVE READING OF THE LOST MIDDLEMAN THIRTEENTH EPISODE SCRIPT - THE DOOMSDAY ARMAGEDDON APOCALYPSE!

The full cast line-up for the panel is still unannounced, but Shout! Factory, who're organizing it, have said that

[W]e do have several cast members already lined up. There will be multiple people doing voices.

Series creator Javier Grillo-Marxuach also Twittered encouragingly:

comic-con: live reading of "the doomsday armageddon apocalypse" with the entire middleman cast reunited...sound good to anyone?

As for what happens in that final episode, the new Middleman website posted a blurb about the graphic novel based on it, also coming out at Comic Con:

Who is The Middleman's long-lost love? Can Lacey Thornfield ever forget her requited but never-acted-upon attraction The Middleman? Is Manservant Neville a beneficent plutocrat or an evil madman with a nefarious plan for world domination? Will Wendy Watson and Tyler Ford ever find time for one another? Will Wendy Watson ever wear a slave girl costume?

All your burning questions will be answered - and all your burning answers will be questioned - in this season-ending, series-concluding installment of The Middleman.

Well done. Have you seen that they're grouping all the webcomics together this year?

    That's no moon. . .

    To be fair, sir:

The first time I met Kurtz was at CAPE 2006. I had heard he was large, but I was not ready for the truth. He came out of the back of a minivan, presumably as (without exaggeration) that was the only vehicle area large enough to carry him. When I saw him get out, get up on both feet and walk, it was like watching a great blue whale tapdance. I could not believe that such a massive human being could actually remain ambulatory.

Imagine my shock when we saw him at ComiCon last year . Homeboy had quite literally dropped at least two hundred pounds. He'd gone from being said space station to, well, just a really fat guy. I have not seen him since - if the weight loss has continued at this pace, I would not be surprised to see him looking mildly chubby this year.

Some info on the Avatar Last Airbender action at the con.

Avatar: The Last Airbender creator Bryan Konietzko announces on AvatarSpirit.net that he and fellow AtLA creator Michael Dante DiMartino will sign at Comic-Con International on Saturday July 25th from 4-6pm:

Mike and I are excited to announce we will be doing a signing at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, currently scheduled for 4:00 - 6:00 on Saturday afternoon, July 25. We will be filming a documentary on the making of the television series, and we’ll be taping our interactions with people while they get their new ATLA SDCC ‘09 posters signed (which I am drawing right now!). The producers of the documentary will be pulling certain people who make a great impression aside to film “testimonials” about what the series has meant to each of them.

Also, we’d love to film people in their best “Avatar” costumes, new or old, earlier in the day on Saturday. We’re not sure if there is already a cosplay gathering planned, but it would behoove us greatly if people could gather at a specific time and place on Saturday, dressed to impress! Bring your favorite fan art, puppets, whatever you want to show to the documentary crew.

Thanks! See you in San Diego! -Bryan

I saw a thing showing the picture you'd buy from the booth to have sign a bit ago too...
    Where was that.

    Details here http://www.theforce.net/collecting/story/OPX_Limited_Mark_Hamill_Pic_At_SDCC_124601.asp

Between Comic-con and Wondercon I've seen a lot of strange/obscure autograph table people(which is unrelated to Mark Hamill, I get that one).
But by far the one I found the most amusing was from last Wondercon.
Autographs from the guy who played the Storm Trooper who said the line, "These aren't the droids we're looking for."

Yeah you dont have to buy that thing. In fact it's "limited" or whatever.
Last year the rule was if guests used the sails pavilion area for autographs and were on the official schedule for autographs they were obligated to sign the program book for free. Anything beyond that was their own perogative. Generally the booths down in the exhibit hall that are companies that specialize in character photos/autographs and such, there will be some kind of fee involved. Generally buying something from their table for the person to sign. And they're sponsoring having that celeb appear at their table. But then there will also be people just appearing on their own at a friendly companies booth like an artist or writer at the Marvel/DC boothes that kind of thing, who are just there for the fun of it. Like that fantasy writer most likely.
